I bought a FastCAT 5e 14ft Ethernet cable for my ps3 that I got from Christmas and tried connecting it from the port in the back that says "LAN" and to a port on the back of my tower that said "Ethernet" and then I brought a tv to the computer and ps3. After I hooked everything up I turned on the PS3, went to Network-Internet Browser and it just came up with "The page cannot be displayed. Network error occurred." After trying that I went to Sign Up for PLAYSTATIONNetwork and it says that "An Ethernet cable is not connected." I don't know what to do because my computer has a port on its tower thats says "Ethernet" so I figured that I didn't need a router or a network gateway. I am clueless on what to do since I have never tried this before. Can someone inform me on what to do?

Oi.

What do you use to connect tot he internet now? You should put one end of the ethernet cord into the PS3 and the ohter into a modem/router/etc. Your PC itself, as far as I know, does not have its own connection to the internet.

your pc can function as a router

what cass said is easier but you can do it your way

go to network connections, select the ethernet port your ps3 is plugged into, turn on internet connection sharing

I have a surge protector that has output and input cables. In the input I have a cable going from the output to the wall and the input from the input to the computer. Would that be some sort of router?

Be sure that your Internet Connection on your PS3 is "Enabled", I'll explain in a moment.

If you can't do what Sarah said, you're going to have to plug your PS3 into your router. If your router is wireless and you don't have an extra ethernet plug, then your PS3 will support a wireless connection too. Once you have your PS3 plugged into your computers internet sharing, router or you're ready to go wireless, here's what you'll need to do in your PS3.

Go to http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/nine_fenrir/icn_settings.gif Settings> Network Settings> Internet Connection> and select "Enabled"

Below Internet Connection in your PS3s Network Settings you'll find Internet Connection Settings. This is where you'll configure a connection with the internet either through wired or wireless.

Once you're online, if your PS3's firmware is not already updated to System Software version 2.10, the PS3 will prompt you to update. Thats done under http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/nine_fenrir/icn_settings.gif Settings> System Update> Update via Internet.

From there you should be good to go. When you're all done and you want to game with me, you can add me to your friend list. My PlayStation Network name is ixnine.

No, what that does is protects from an electrical surge from traveling through your network cable to your computer.

That's the problem. PS3 is only going to support a broadband internet connection. You need DSL or cable. Dial-up internet wont work.

If plugging your PS3 directly into your PC (i.e. LAN port to LAN port), make sure you're using a crossover LAN cable and not a normal LAN cable. The cable looks just like a normal cable except the connection on both ends are swapped (i.e. red-white-green-white-orange-white-blue-white on one end becomes blue-white-orange-white-green-white-red-white on the other). If you're on broadband, it's better to just get a router and hook both your modem, PS3 and PC into that instead of using the PC.

Also, you'll also need to run some sort of routing/bridging software on the PC with built-in DHCP server (wingate?) to allow the PS3 to go online. And of course, your PC needs a working network connection).

It should also be mentioned that using Dial-up to play online isn't really a good idea. Lag will seriously hamper your enjoyment (and depending on how the game server is set up, it might also cause lag to everyone else on the server, which will probably send an angry mob to your doorstep).

That said, I suggest just getting a broadband connection and a router, and hooking up both your PC and PS3 to it instead.

Dial up won't function with a LAN line, that's why it says network cable disconnected. As far as this PC can be used as a modem thing it intrigues me, because my cousin has a laptop blah blah blah it'd be helpful.

Hold on, I think I understand. You have a telephone line going from the wall to your PC, and an ethernet line going from your PC to your PS3? If so did you try connecting to a dial-up ISP before checking the PS3's connection?

Exactly as I suspected Ultra Magnus. As I said earlier, you need a crossover LAN cable if you're gonna plug your PS3 directly into your PC. Normal ones won't do unless there's a hub/router between the PC and the PS3. That's why it's showing as disconnected- the cable isn't sending signals from the PS3 to the right pins on the PC and vice versa.

The problem is the cord, it is a CAT 5e and the one that came with mine (PS3 80G) is a CAT 6. I left my cord at a friend's place and thought I would pick up an ethernet cord just like yours and it was sending me sort of the same message. It wouldn't let me connect ultimately and so that could be the problem I will let you know if it works to reconnect the CAT 6 Ethernet cord. Hope that helps.
