Epic, heroic, hopless, dark, fast, slow, orchestrated...........

There are too many adjectives to describe them. I really don't like the "heroic songs with hope" because... well, I don't know. I guess I prefer them darker and epic.

For example, I like Black Doom's battle theme (Shadow The Hedgehog) but not the "Live and Learn" theme from SA2: Battle.

The song has to embody the sense of action, a little bit of crazyness, and a desperate will to win. Kinda like you're in the fight for your life. Or very adventurous.

Final boss theme from Flower Princess Natalie
Boss theme from Metal Slug 5
Boss theme from Ragnarok 2
Final boss from Sonic 3
Live and Learn from Sonic Adventure 2
What I'm Made Of from Sonic Heroes
Last boss theme from Streets of Rage
Boss theme from Thunder Force 5
Boss theme from Tobi Tsukihime

Some examples.

For me it has to be epic. Anything with a epic choir is great to me.

For example:
Megalith- Ace Combat 4
The Unsung War- Ace Combat 5
Zero- Ace Combat Zero
The Seal is Broken- Blue Dragon

And while its not music for a boss fight and lacking an epic choir, "The Liberation of Gracemeria" from Ace Combat 6 could fit into that category for me.

Epic. Definitely, epic. Also, a bit of choral work is always welcome. A dark style can be effective, too. E.g:

"Vergil 3" - Devil May Cry 3
"Zero" - Ace Combat: Zero
"Megalith ~Agnus Dei~" - Ace Combat 4
"Darkness of the Unknown" - Kingdom Hearts II
"Dancing Mad" - FF VI
"The 3 Karma" - Shadow Hearts: Covenant
"Lady Tears II" - Shadow Hearts: From the New World
"Promised Pain" - Xenosaga Episode III

Ooo... I really adore the Lufia 2 boss themes. They're awesome. I also like Illusion of Gaia's normal boss theme - the final boss is not THAT good. Same goes with Ogre Battle.
I love Terranigma's both boss themes, tho. They're really desperate... It's kinda like "Hahaha, now I have you, hero... you won't escape my clutches. DIE!"

And I have to add that Square of America did well in Secret of Evermore's boss themes - tho I like the one with the guitar more. Actually the whole game has more of a dark atmosphere as opposed to the games from Squaresoft (from Japan).

Megaman Battle Network also has a few pretty strong boss musics... They're really great.

I feel the last battle music should always reflect the kind of character the boss is. Not only that the situation, The Last stand and Epic. Choral Pieces really do it for me in this case :D also a dark tone that says to me your gonna die if you don't stand your ground!

Like some people have mentioned already pieces like

KHII: Darkness of the Unknown (Love the tone of Despair in the last section of this track, think it reflects Xenmas well)
KH re:Chain of Memories: Lord of the Castle
Blue Dragon: Release the Seal
Metroid Prime: Vs. Metroid Prime (Head) (Though this has no chorus as such it uses the main theme pretty well I think)
Castlevania DXC: Illusionary Dance (What a piece is all I've got to say about it)

A few other tracks stand out to me because well, they have a strange tone for a Final Battle to me

FFIII DS: This was probably for old school ascetics because to me it has an electronic tone to me which is odd considering what the boss is, but I love the melody in it :D

Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green: Last Battle (Vs. Rival) Love the feeling of Chaos I get from this track, I was kind of surprised at what I was hearing whilst i was playing because this track had more of an epic feel compared to what it once was in the GB version, the power of GBA no? :D

I think I'll stop there because I could probably go on picking things out of my library :P

The "final boss" BGM reflects many things:
-The final boss him/her/itself. Sometimes, the music seems to enhance the character's presence. What if RE3's Nemesis was chasing you down to the tune of a Benny Hill skit? It's kinda hard to run when you're too busy laughing your head off.
For those who are confused, here's a clip:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pNUb-m9hwxA

-The relationship between the player, not so much the character in the game. You work so hard to reach the end. Wouldn't you want to end it with a bang? Be it a choir or a rock band, this track will only mean something to those who went through the whole mess. FF7's OWA (before it was overused during the AC marketing) was something that messed with you. Seriously.

-The situation/crisis at hand. Need I say more?

Personal Faves (too much to mention, so here's a few of 'em):
KH2: Darkness of the Unknown
What can I say? It just reflects the final boss so well!

AC4: Megalith ~Agnus Dei~
This track evokes a sense of heroism while reflecting the Megalith's sheer power. As you hear the action from the ground forces, the song only enhances the desperation to save your comrades from certain death. I still play AC4 just for this moment in the game.

SA2: Live and Learn-
It's just like "Open Your Heart". 'Nuff said.

CT: World Revolution-
Technically, this isn't the final boss BGM, but it's played during the final boss battles and sounds better than THE final boss BGM.

FMA & The Broken Angel: Cutting Edge-
To those who didn't play this game, shame on you.
Yeah, gameplay is fairly repetitive and fairly sucks, but the story makes up for this. And the intensity you feel as you reach this part in the game (this is the second half of the boss battle) is amazing.

FMA- Dual Sympathy: Final Boss BGM-
It just sounds cool. Really.

Epic does the trick for me, along with a non-slow tempo. The best example I could think would be Final Fantasy. FFIII is good, but it doesnt give you the feelling of "final". On the other hand, I just love the FFIV final boss theme. It's epic and the notes keep growing and growing and then "get released". FFV final boss is also epic but it doen's have the same momentum, so I don't like it as much as FFIV. FFVI gives me mixed feelings. It's a great composition, but it lacks something for me. It doesn't feel as epic as the last boss in FFIV eventhough the battle in the game itself is more epic than that of FFIV. The way the song gets calm moment is terrific, but the previous and next movements aren't. Same for FFVII. I love those chorus, the song is epic, but the tempo seems off for a final boss to me, as it's not as fast paced as it should. "Birth of God" works better for me for that purpose. But that's as egxtreme said, this track means something if you went through the whole game. Probably my favorite final boss song of the FF series so far, would be FF8's The Extreme. It starts calm, and slowly the crescendo gets stronger and faster, giving you a really epic feeling, like is everything or nothing. I don't particulary like the story or the characters, but that song just makes the game worth for me.
Even a regular song can be a great final boss music with the right arrangement. Take Vampire Killer for example. Could you imagine it as a final boss music? And it is in Castlevania Legends. It works great because the tempo gives it an epic feeling and you feel the "urgency" of the situation in the song, even with a poorly handled GB sound.

My favorite final boss could probably be Unrestrained Struggle from Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. There is one part of the calm moments of that song that I don't enjoy, but overall is good.

my favorite final boss themes are most of the KH games,
especially final mix. I like that "Rage Awakened" had less 'despair', or whatever it is that you call it, but it had more of an angry tone. Then my other favorite is Deep Core and Deep
Core (Allegro) from Sonic Rush Adventure. The tone was somewhat epic, but I thought it had a evil, mad type theme to it. OH!! And For true Story from SA2.

I like them dark, fast, and melodic. FFVII's ""Birth of a God" is a good example of this; it's quick, dark, and there is a good melody. The Lavos Battle music from Chrono Trigger is another example.

Similarly, I enjoyed the song entitled "Energy Disc Music" from the DBZ dub as serving as a final battle track of sorts for Goku v. Frieza.

Usually, it's the epic themes that really get me going, but it all depends on the genre of game, really. To be honest, in most cases, I tend to prefer the themes of earlier bosses, as opposed to the final boss.

However, here are some of my personal favourite final boss themes:

Dead Or Alive 4 - Alpha-152
Heavenly Sword - Bohan the Raven King
Legacy of Kain: Defiance - Blood Omen 2 Theme (this game recycles music from the previous games in the series, making this the final boss music)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - Evacuate!/Dark Samus Final Boss Theme
Resident Evil 2 - The Third Malformation of "G"
Silent Hill 3 - Kill God
Silent Hill 4: The Room - Final Boss

1.Romancing saga.
2.Legaia 2 DS.
3.Maybe twisted metal 3.
4.Shadow hearts (any).

*these numbers do not indicate my favorite games or music, just what i could think of at the moment. Oh, and i'm actually a huge lover of VGM tracks, for i have over 2000 on my ipod...

Man the best Final Boss Theme would have to be The last boss on Shadow of the Colossus. ITs so dark and epic. it lets you know this is it, the ultimate showdown where only one can come out alive. You face a giant skyscraper of a boss and only have a sword, the song gets the adrenalin(sp?) rushing so much. It pits you against the ultimate fight for survival and the ultimate quest to achieve your goal.
right or wrong?

This is a toughie.. I generally like insanely chaotic songs, that has unique chord progressions and complex melodies.
Although some can be relatively simple! Though it's not a final boss, the song "Supporting Me... For Biolizard" from Sonic Adventure 2 is a good example. Very moody, dark, chilling and actually contains a good subtle lyrical content, I don't see it a lot.

For more chaotic final songs though, I like stuff like Sonic Advance 2's Extra Boss Battle (Boss 7 is kickass as well), Sonic 3 & Knuckles' Final Boss and Final Fantasy 7's "Birth Of God". Some of Project Sylpheed's songs remind me of this too. Too bad stuff like this is a rare breed. I like melodical chaos.

I like it when the Final Boss Theme reminds you of what your characters have been through throughout the game. Like the Final Battle Theme in Final Fantasy IV that has a distorted version of the Main Theme in it or Dark Messanger to the final battle against Kuja in Final Fantasy IX that has all the Kuja themes together in a mix, and Kujas themes has been heard everytime he has done anything bad in the game so it really makes you feel and think about all that he has done.

But I also love the strong powerfull final boss themes like One Winged Angel. Heh, I like most Final Boss Music. :P

Honestly, it depends on game. Sonic's final boss songs (usually by Crush 40) are fitting for the end of the game. If they had some OWA type of song that would just be weird. Most games songs are fitting.

A Final Boss should represent "This is it, the last battle". The music can represent the battle itself, the opponent, the stage or even the situation, I think that a song that represent all these and the game, while trying to keep to the game general style of music, is truely a final boss song, hence why some use the original or remake of the main theme
Me, I'm not really that picky as long as it fits
Examples;
Multi-man Melee 2 ( also used for Event 51: The Showdown) - SSB Melee
Les Acteurs Incroyable - VJ Red hot Rumble
Solaris phase 2 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2006
One Winged Angel - FF7
The Midnight Carnival - GGXX
Aparoid Queen Battle 2 - Star Fox Assault
I AM (Devil Doom Version) - Shadow the Hedgehog
Epyon Theme - Gundam Wing Endless Duel
Final Battle - Z.O.E 2
Last Battle - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Escape (Dark Samus 3/4) - Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Hellfire - Soul Calibur 2

Here is my list of final boss songs:
02 (Kirby 64)
Final Destination (SSBB)
VS. Marx (Kirby Super Star) I like the SSBB version of this song also.
Miracle Matter (Kirby 64) if you didn't get all the shards
Doom Dragon (Golden sun 2)
The music for the 2 scarabs In Halo 3 (Not a final boss but it was epic)
Saren (Mass Effect)
Mother Brain (Metriod,Metroid Zero Mission)
Super Mother Brain ( Super Metroid)
VS. Giga Bower (SSBM)
Supreme Ruler (Remastered Tracks Zero IDEA)
NONAGRESSION (Sonic Advance 3) A.K.A Emerl's theme.
Puppet Master (Advance Wars Days of Ruin)
Von Bolt's Theme (Advance Wars Dual Strike)
Sturm's theme (Advance Wars)
Final Boss X (Megaman X4)
Final Boss Zero (Megaman X4)
VS. Chaos (Final Fantasy 1)
VS.Emperor (Final Fantasy 2)
All the Final battle songs from sonic games that I played.
and the boss songs of DDR and the VERTEX series in ITG.

I don't play a lot of RPG's but many of their boss battles sound too orchestrated for me. I'd list a number of fighting game bosses & highlight their themes unfortunately I'm too lazy as of now to properly categorize them right now.

Tekken 2 - 2 boss themes that go well together. Kazuya & Devil Kazuya, subboss - boss, excellent tracks, the 2nd sounds similarly the same but much more sinister, it's as if the song has become possessed by devil itself. very atmospheric.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 - Bisons theme - If you lose it's game over, no continues & intimidating as this theme may sound it's enough to give you a heart attack before bison inevitably strikes you with a lvl3 psycho crusher.

King of Fighters 2003 - Mukai theme (styx). If you know how cheap KOF bosses are then this theme will surely help you understand why SNK have such a morbid sense of humor. One of the most creepiest boss themes you'll ever hear & is quite scary in its every respect.

That's all I can think of right now.

A final boss music have to feel like everything you said before, but there's something you forgot. For most of the game, people take different amound of time to kill the boss, music is not infinite, it has to rego through the loop. I love the music that goes around without the feeling of being repetitive ( even if it's indeed very repetitve ) perfect example for this is, sonic 3 final boss theme :D. I hated it at the beginning sounded so weird, and the "good" part ended sooo quickly. But now i love it, because this tiny piece of music can loop over and over, and if you listen to it carefully, it's not the same because there are 2 melodies at the same time xD

It has to be epic, but at the same time it has to give you a will to win as mentioned before.
But I think it depends on who you're fighting.
For example if you're fighting evil it should be dark and fast, but if you're fighting like an old friend or something, it should be a little more "light."

For me, any type of song is ok, orchestrated, epic, furious, fast slow.....
It just has to have something inside it, that gives you feeling of it, feeling of a situation and make you cower.

For example I like "Go go go!" from Lunar SSSC, it is fast and really get you into it.
The final battle from Grandia II is furious and make you really hyperactive and willing to kill the final boss.
Final battle from Grandia I is again so unique - it starts with theme of Gaia and then suddenly starts battle theme for the first cd, its something amazing.
"Promised pain" - Xenosaga episode III is epic and furious, it is also one of the best final battles.
Then "Lucia vs Zophar" - Lunar 2 EBC
"Great assize" - Grandia III
Wild arms 4 have a nice one too! ^^

Not sure to consider this a "final boss theme", but in RaceDriver GRID, ingame there is a race known as "LeMans 24 Hours" (compressed to 12 frantic minutes).
It's silent and peaceful through the afternoon and night... but as the sun rises back up... bass shaking pounding. It gets faster, for a few more seconds until going into some kind of fast orchestral mix, building up more and more until the clock hits 0:00, giving the intensity that every move counts. I should record a video or rip or something like that someday.

I can't really choose what style I like a final boss theme to be, because it can be done in a lot of different ways and can still be fitting and awesome... One rule for me is that it can't sound like "just another boss theme". It has to be special. Usually, I expect a final battle theme to be one of the best songs on the whole soundtrack... Two of my favorites...

Final Fantasy VIII - The Extreme
Xenosaga Episode III - Promised Pain

I usually like final boss songs... as someone already said, it has to give you that "this is it!" kind of feeling, but it's also great when it reflects the final boss itself. For instance, "Dancing Mad" is great, combining the theme of the Empire with Kefka's theme...

And indeed, Chrono Trigger's "World Revolution" has a more epic feeling than the last battle theme (although I like how the background shows places from different ages; it makes me really want to beat Lavos)...

Other boss songs I like:
-> Fake (Rockman Zero)
-> Supreme Ruler (Rockman Zero 2) - the in-game version was already great, and RTRZ IDEA made it even better!
-> Judgement Day (Rockman Zero 3 - against giant Omega)
-> One-Winged Angel (FFVII) - even though I don't like FFVII in general, I think OWA has a nice ring to it.
-> The Decisive Battle (FFVI) - not a last boss one, but still great!
-> Both Boss Battle themes from Chrono Trigger
-> Magus' theme (just perfect!!)
-> Crash III (the arrangement from RTRZ Telos)
-> Against Smithy's 1st form (Super Mario RPG)
-> Regular Boss Battle (SMRPG)
-> King K.Rool battle (DKC)
-> Last Bowser battle (Mario 64)
-> Scythe of Petals (Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories)
-> Tension Rising (Kingdom Hearts II)
-> The Other Promise (Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix)
-> Majora's Mask/Incarnation/Wrath

If I keep thinking, the list will get a lot longer... :P

As other people have said, it really depends on the tone of the game. Anyway, some of my favorites:

Galacta Knight - Kirby Super Star Ultra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvl07qvG0pc)
One of Kirby's best recent works, the intense track is quite fitting for an intense fight---even the most accomplished of Kirbyfags will find themselves in for quite a battle. (Same with marx soul, but that's neither here nor there.)

Giygas - Earthbound/Mother 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYb9kSCkjE8)
Without a doubt, Giygas is the most disturbing final boss in gaming history. Pokey explains everything to you before the fight, and that's all well and good. But then you get to the actual fight and...Jesus Christ, nothing makes sense anymore. The series of tracks that play while you fight him are enough to give you the creeps, if his perpetually distorted image doesn't.

So why do I like the tracks?

Because I've never known a final boss before who, by simply distorting an ethereal image and its music, could make me afraid to sleep at night. Bravo, Itoi. Bravo.

02 - Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwpLSiplyYc&fmt=18)
The epitome of EPIC in this sort of game, and let me tell you why 02 is my favorite final boss ever.

You defeat Miracle Matter with ALL 100 shards, and suddenly Dark Star is formed. After a couple of mini-rooms, you fly into the air, and combo Ribbon (that fairy) and the crystal. Then...

A white spherical being with red-tipped wings and a golden halo looks up at you, and you can see what appears to be two black dots serving as its eyes, and a red mouth in the shape of a grin. An angel in Dark Star?...

NO! The dots disappear, and the mouth opens wide to reveal its true form...a single red eye. 02 is here to put a stop to you, shooting exploding blood from its eyes at you.

And with that music going on all the while, you hardly notice that you should be weirded out by all this.

I have to take off now, but I'll have more at a future time.

...but off the top of my head, Yoshi's Island's final boss (a huge, epic baby bowser with killer guitar riffs) was one of my favorite... Zelda OOT's final boss, and Majora's Mask's final boss's final form music... Stuff I like a lot.

I like Sonic Rush's as well, but it was not epic and final boss-like to me... but a great track in general that I often listen to.

Oh... and the Biolizard. While not the final boss, it's... almost the final boss :)

I really like epic final boss music, but I also like ones were the music suits the enemy and/or situation

I think that the final boss of Final Fantasy X was awesome..
I also think the same about the One-Winged Angel song from Final Fantasy 7.

I going to have to agree with Neblug. The final colossus battle theme is just incredible.

It's not like other "final boss" songs. It's not fast paced or intense. It's very dreary and sad. To me, it reflects the culmination of all of Wander's hard-fought battles with the Colossi, and how this one will be his most difficult. Wander's skin turns pale, and his hair darkens. He's tired, and the song also represents his weariness, yet he never falters, and refuses to quit. It's also very foreshadowing, hinting that something bad is going to happen.

For me, a final boss theme has to either be an epic orchestration or a high energy, action packed theme.

Here are some of my favourites:

Soul Calibur II - Hellfire
Soul Calibur IV - Thanatos

Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3 - Brave or Grave
Street Fighter IV - Secret Laboratory Stage (Round 2) -Unknown-
Vampire Savior - Fetus of God
Megaman/Rockman X5 - Sigma 2nd

Persona 3 - The Battle for Everyone's Souls
Persona 4 - The Almighty (Persona Music Live version)

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Last Battle
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Final Ganondorf battle
Super Smash Bros Brawl - Final Destination

Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu - Geese Howard's theme
Rage of the Dragons - Statelessness
King of Fighters 96 - Goenitz's theme - Trash Head
King of Fighters 98 - Omega Rugal's theme - Ketchaku RD
King of Fighters 2002 - Omega Rugal's theme - Last Dance
King of Fighters 2003 - Mukai's theme - Styx

Bahamut Lagoon - Final Battle
Final Fantasy V - Neo Exdeath
Final Fantasy VI - Dancing Mad
Final Fantasy VII - One-Winged Angel (Advent Children versions)
Final Fantasy VIII - The Extreme
Final Fantasy IX - Grand Cross
Final Fantasy X - Decisive Battle
Final Fantasy XII - The Battle For Freedom
