This was prompted by one of my cousins asking to borrow The Sword in the Stone from me.

Anyway, am I the only one that thought the scene where Merlin turned Arthur into a squirrel and that whole scene where the girl squirrel that had a crush on him or whatever was all heartbroken and crying when he turned back into a human was a horribly sad scene?

Discuss, and post other examples of "Holy shit, that's depressing!" moments in Disney and other kid's films.

When Littlefoot's Mom got aced by Sharptooth in "The Land Before Time 1". As a kid, I was saddened...at 24...I suffer from abandonment issues. Lol!

When Princess Elspeth was killed by the dragon in Dragonslayer.
When the Genie was captured by Jafar in Alladdin.
When Scar killed Mufasa (I agree with the above post).

I don't get as heart broken as I did as a kid now. But Disney man... They really know how to make a tear jerker, don't they?

lol. I've not watched that movie in years, but do remember that scene.

I always thought that part in Pinocchio when the kids get turned into donkeys was pretty horrible. When first watching the scene (think I must've been about 10 or so) when that donkey can still talk, and the coachman refuses to set him free, I found myself really close to tears.

Plus:

When Scar killed Mufasa (I agree with the above post).

ok, how about when, in My Girl, the kid is killed by bees and the girl sees him dead. so sad.

and the ultimate tear jerker, imo, is when, in A Little Princess (the 90's version), she's in the room with her dad and he can't remember her and the cops come and he's like, take her away and then she's like "Papa! Papa! it's me, papa!" wow, i got teary eyed just remembering that scene.

I'll second that. And in the game, you don't get to kill Scar, you only get to throw him off a cliff. Double asshole for not being able fully avenge Mufasa's death.

I remember feeling very sorry for the she-squirrel as well. Still, Bambi wandering through the snowy woods calling for his mother (who is dead) was the saddest that I can think of. The music they used with the scene really yanked at my heartstrings.

Mufasa. Nothing can describe the anguish I felt when I saw Simba trying to wake up his dead dad. Oh man...T_T.

But Scar got his =]

NOPE. From what I remember...Simba decides not to and then Scar attacks him from behind and then he falls off the cliff only to be greeted by angry hyenas.

Right?

Haven't seen A Little Princess (though read the book some time ago) but do remember My Girl. That part was indeed very sad.

Well, it isn't exactly as depressing as it is just plain disturbing - when Dumbo gets drunk. I just barely remember the rest of the film but somehow, that sequence has always stuck to my mind in perfect clarity.

I thought that part was really funny, Rob, but yeah I guess I could see how its kind of disturbing.

Just the thought of pink elephants morphing in and out of each other in abstract shapes and formations together with the circus rhythms sends me back to the time when I was a small child watching the film, mouth wide open in horror seeing those bizarre images.

Never really taken to elephants since then.

Probably Mufasa's death in lion king, but in Lion King 2, Kovu's brother's death was pretty sad, and all he wanted to do was impress his mummy :(

In the Little Mermaid, when the sea witch turns Triton into one of those things she used to eat, I was pretty sad and praying he wouldn't get eaten.

What the fuck was that? Shrimp?

1. The Land Before Time is a real bawl-fest. I cannot watch the ending credits without crying cause of the song.
2. The ending song of Free Willy also makes me cry.

In the film "Pay it Forward" when Hayley Joel Osment's character is stabbed, and everyone congregates with candles and stuff at his house.

Okay, it sounds lame now, but I was touched at first. :(

Not during my childhood by any means.... when James Woods gets killed in the dumbest way possible at the end of The Specialist, i nearly wept. it was insulting on so many levels and just sucked. i really wanted him to kill Sly & The Beaver Girl. oh well. guess they didn't listen to the test audiences. big shock there.
