A ribbon is an accessory.
Best armour imo is the Mystile. I THINK you can get it in the Northern Crater. Or somewhere...

There and during your visit to Midgar in the second disk. After defeating Proud Clod and before climbing the walkway. One of the chests has a Mystile.
