I've noticed this for a while now. There seems to be lot of discussion about the dialogue in the ending of FFIX. Namely, that long monologue between Kuja's demise and the play at Alexandria. I've noticed most people believe that this monologue was actually a letter written by Vivi on his 'deathbed', but, I beg to differ on this arguement. It's most likely in fact Garnet talking.

For one thing, the style of speech used is very feminine and 'learned', quite unlike Vivi's child-like niavetity. Vivi would say something like, 'umm I really, really liked you Zidane. I learned so much about myself travelling with you." However, the dialogue more has the feel of someone mourning a lost love, ie. Garnet mourning Zidane. Not someone reliving their life on their deathbed.

And, for those who don't think that Vivi appears in the ending; here's food for thought. In the scene where it shows Vivi's kids bumping into Puck outside the tavern, you see six walk past (five actually, but you also include the one who Puck bumps into), however, in the final moments during Garnet's reunion with Zidane, as the camera swings past Vivi's kids in the audience, you can see the five Vivis sitting in the front row, plus TWO in the row behind, jumping up and down in their seats! You do the math.

What do you think?

Quote:

Garnet: "How did you survive?"
Zidane: "I didn't have a choice. I had to live. I wanted to come home to you. So,... I sang your song."
Garnet: "Our song."

I think you're right. I didn't never actually believe they were Vivi's thoughts. I knew the rumour about Vivi's death, (luckily after I bet the game) and I thought it might be possible, but cause I happen to like Vivi a lot, I didn't want to think he was dead. So, I continued to believing the theory I had since beginning.

Long live to Vivi!! He's so great!!!

I didnt think Vivi was dead. How did that rumor get started?

**SPOILERS, obviously*

I also thought it was Dagger speaking of Zidane. Then, after watching the ending again, I also thought it might be each character speaking their feelings, although the verbiage did seem out-of-character for some (like Amarant and Quina).

I think the "rumor" got started because one scene in the ending had Puck talking to several young black mages. The one he talked to said he was Vivi's son. If you remember back to the scene in the Black Mage Village, in the cemetary, Zidane and Vivi talk to one of the mages, who mentions that all of them tended to die within a year of being made. Vivi may have been different. It was mentioned that the first to be made had a defect that made it live longer. Whether or not Vivi was the one he spoke of, I really don't know.

Enkidoh> That quote literally brought tears to my eyes when I first saw it. :)

You say "Possible Spoilers" but with a thread title like that you have ruined it for some people anways perhaps. I am not really bother though FF9 in my books wasn't one of my favourites, the FMV's were pretty awesome but thats all I really liked.

I remember seeing this rumour started by a few people a while ago on the Final Fantasy Online Forums, who were saying that in the Japanese version of FFIX, that part of the game features certain kanji characters in the dialogue that only Vivi was seen to say in the game(don't ask me what exactly. I'm not very good at reading and speaking Japanese.), so these people automatically assumed that that sequence was a letter written by Vivi as he was dying, supposedly. I tried explaining to them on the Forum, but they wouldn't listen. Oh well, I suppose that's half the fun with the FF series; it's endings and storylines are open to many different interperatations.

Quote: "So, you think a given name has meaning? Boy, you have been bewitched by the light of the blue moon." Garland, FFIX.

Quote: "My time is almost up. Time to die everyone!" Kuja, FFIX.

Quote: "Come back after you kill big bad guy. I prepare big meal for everyone." Quina, FFIX.

Quote: "Hey, I'm not the idiot with the loud, booming voice and the dirty, rusty armour!" Zidane, FFIX.

I believe it was Garnet too but what stumps me is how did Vivi have kids? I mean, I've already had "the talk" but I mean who was the female he.....worked with?

Remember that the black mages weren't 'born,' they were 'created.'

Think back to when Vivi was magenapped in Dali. Remember how he, Zidane, and Dagger found the factory below the windmill, where the mage 'dolls' were being created?

And also remember the fight in the Iifa tree, with Soulcage. He explains that Vivi and his kin are created from the mist to be soulless weapons of war.

Now, HOW they were created never really got explained in much detail, but I always interpreted this as saying that the mages didn't need a mother and father in the sexual sense. Vivi was always afraid that because they stopped the mist, no other black mages would be created. I assumed that, in the ending, it was a way of showing that it was Vivi who had found a way to create other mages.

You know, I was also thinking of who was speaking at the end... Like I mentioned earlier, I thought it was Dagger at first. Enkidoh, you mentioned that it didn't really sound "Vivi-esque." I'm wondering, if you were to write a letter to someone as you were dying, especially to a dear friend who you thought may be dead, maybe you'd make it more poetic than usual. Vivi was obviuolsy smart, but he became more self-assured by the end of the game. I'd assume he'd have gained even more confidence in the time between leaving the Iifa tree and Zidane's return to Alexandria, thus making those words sound more formal.

It could have been Dagger, or it could have been Vivi. I also think it could have been each character. I guess we really may never really know...

".. I guess we all have to say goodbye someday. Everyone... Thank you. Farewell. My memories will be part of the sky... "

Beautiful, beautiful ending. Pulls the heartstrings every time...

Hehehe, I KNEW I was going to ramble on. Sorry... :D

Yeah, I always go by that Vivi didn't die... Even though I kinda thought he did... Geez the're so much proo in eiter direction and it just lays down to what you believe.

Also Vivi could've gotten kids w/Eiko :)

Another thing people don't know about is at the end w/Eiko when she calls Cid and Hilda her parents, people just think she was pathetic and needed a family. Well, apprently Eiko wants to be the daughter because of a couple of things... she kinda wants to have a family and (the thing no one even guesses about) she wants to be a princess. Since Garnet is her sister and she is a princess (or was), Eiko doesn't want to be left out and really wants to be a princess cause she is jealous... :) See? Also another thing is because in the middle of the game when Eiko and Garnet find out they're sisters, Eiko was like "Why did you get to be a princess?" which leads to her really wanting to be one.

I don't think Garnet and Eiko are related Vivi FF (great avatar and sig by the way - I love Sonic the Hedgehog!). Sure, Garnet and Eiko are both summoners, but, it's never actually said who Eiko's parents were. As far as I can gather, Eiko was born AFTER the destruction of Madain Sari, and therefore after Jane (Garnet's real mother) fled by boat with Garnet to Alexandria. As Garnet is ten years older than Eiko, it's therefore highly improbable that Garnet and Eiko are related to each other in any other way than being summoners / White Mages and both being born at the same village.

And it seems obvious that Cid and Hilda would adopt Eiko. After all, she said that she never wanted to be alone anymore. Zidane was missing, feared dead, and Garnet was too wrapped up in her depression over losing him as well as having to organise Alexandria's reconstruction, so Cid and Hilda are a natural choice as foster parents.

Quote: "O holy guardian,... hear our prayers..... darkness descends over us once again.... O holy guardian,.... hear our prayers..... Deliver us out of darkness into light!" Garnet and Eiko's chant to summon Alexander, FFIX.

Quote: "The theatre ship should arrive any minute. It's been so long; I can't wait to see everyone again. But,... it will never be the same. I have to let go of the past. I have to move on, just like he taught me." Garnet, FFIX.

Quote: "When the water wears the moonlight as it's pendant, I shall await you at the dock." Eiko's love letter to Zidane, which has some unforseen consequences, FFIX.

Quote: "Promise me something. Please come back." Garnet, FFIX.

Sorry DarkmanX (and anyone else who felt I spoiled that part of the game for them). I've changed the Subject wording so it shouldn't give too much away anymore. Thanks for pointing it out; I didn't even think that it was an obvious spoiler. Oh well, we all do stupid things sometimes, so hopefully, not too many people had a big plot line blown for them. Once again, I'm really sorry.

Oh, and I noticed another little thing in the ending. The last line of the monologue, just before it shows Garnet waiting for the Prima Vista to arrive, sounds very similar to certain lyrics from 'Melodies of Life'.; i.e: "My memories,..will be...part...of the sky.," is similar to "Melodies of life, to the sky beyond the flying birds - forever and beyond," and "I've laid my memories and dreams upon those wings." Call it coincedence, but it seems suspcicious that these lines are very similar to the monologue . 'Melodies of Life' is supposed to be the song that Garnet learned as a child at Madain Sari which she sings whenever she feels sad or lonely; exactly like during that monologue. But, that's just my opinion.

Quote: "Alone for a while I've been searching through the dark, for traces of the love you left inside my lonely heart.
To weave by picking up the pieces that remain, Melodies of Life - loves lost refrain." Emiko Shiratori, from 'Melodies of Life', FFIX.

Quote: "The theatre ship should arrive any minute. It's been so long; I can't wait to see everyone again. But,... it'll never be the same. I have to let go of the past. I have to move on, just like he taught me." Garnet, FFIX.

Quote: "My, my. The princess has such a bloodthirsty little puppet!" Kuja, FFIX.

Quote: "You can stop the frog-talk now." Zidane, FFIX.

Oops, the thread Subject hasn't altered in the index! Oh, well, I should have thought about it before I posted. We live and learn...

Quote: "When the water wears the moonlight as it's pendant, I shall wait you at the dock," Eiko's love letter to Zidane, which has some rather unforseen consequences, FFIX.

Quote: "What's so fun about fighting savage beasts?..... Wait, did I say 'animals' again?" Alice the shopkeeper, alarmed about her encouragement of Vivi's participation in Lindblum's festival of the Hunt, FFIX.

Quote: "This is definetly the worst situation we have ever been in." Cinna, FFIX.

Quote: "What's the matter? Something stuck in your throat?" Zidane, FFIX.

I would have to go by the rule regarding character deaths in final fantasy from playing it so much. From what I picked up, they are only dead if you actually see them die or clearly knew that they died and I'll give examples of this (*SPOILERS*)

FFVII - Aeris died and you cleary knew she was killed.

A bunch from FFIV -

Anna and Tella died and you saw them killed right there.

When yang, rydia, and edward were lost from the leviathan accident, cecil thought they were dead but they weren't. Also, yang saves everyone from Tower of Babil, he doesn't die because they did not show him die right there. And the same thing goes for cid he jumps off the airship.

So, in my opinion, only if it was very clear that Vivi died, he is still alive.

Try telling the people on FFO's Forums that. I posted this same very thread on the FFOnline Forums, and I've basically been flamed into oblivion, as well as anyone else who chose to believe my theory. Basically, they believe Vivi died because in the Japanese version, whenever Vivi said 'I' the Japanese letter 'boku' was used instead of another letter and no other characters used this word to say 'I'. Then, in the ending, again the word 'boku' appeared denoting 'I'. So, they therefore assumed because of this Vivi was dying and saying farwell to his companions. It maybe true, but nothing has been proven. Oh well, at least here people are more open minded.

Quote: "Come back after you kill big bad guy. I prepare big meal for everyone." Quina, FFIX.

Quote: "This pattern is,.. making me dizzy!" Vivi, going a bit woozy looking at the rug in Illia's Grandma's House in Alexandria, FFIX.

Quote: "This is no way to treat a lady!" Eiko, FFIX.

Quote: "I exist, for only one purpose; to return everything back to the zero world, where there is no life, and no crystal, to give life. In a world of nothing, fear does not exist. This is the world that all life desires." Necron, FFIX.

Well, I don't know about this. Maybe my opions are a bit byist (sorry about the spelling), but I really think that was Vivi speaking in the end. Although I did like your take on the Vivi kids thing, that was really cute, with the two Vi's standing in the back, but here arisises another question. Why would Vivi's...erm... girl, dress like him? Or is that what your implying?
But anyway, I realy like the notion that that was Vivi talking. The end quote really sounds like something he woould say.(i.e.. "My memories will be part of the sky.")
I don't really find a basis for that quote to be coming from Garnet, and I really don''t like the idea of it coming from Kuja, however much respect for him I have. (Ah, Kuja-kun!)
But don't get me wrong, I don't think Vivi-kun died. I really agree with you when you say he was there.
Thanks for your opinons though, I really liked the proof you gave. ^.^

It has to be Garnet she's I think because of the context of some of the lines like has been said before "our song" Zidane. And the whole thing sounds like it is building up to Garnet's FMV at the end after the play and/or she's talking to Zidane after the reuniting about her feelings...
