Awesome movie.

I prefer the originals. Shintaro Katsu created such a unique character with his Zatoichi, but I think Takeshi played him just like any other samurai (besides being blind, I mean). I can understand someone who isn't a big weepy sap like me preferring the remake over the sentimental originals, though. My favorite's "Fight, Zatoichi, Fight!"

the ones i remembr are JUON , zatoichi (the movie), RAN.

i have also seen some chinese films, like the original undubbed version of the nightraiders (or something like that, dont know the name in english... along with the taiwanese serial) kung fu hustle, shaolin soccer, and warriors of heaven and earth.

Out of the Miike stuff the one I enjoyed most was Gozu (the sequence with the Yakuza Dog at the beginning had me crying with laughter.

Watched tons of asian films this year as I went a bit mad on it (again.)

Favourite is Memories of Murder (S Korea) - same director who later made The Host.

Best undiscovered gem that does not get mentioned enough is Save the Green Planet - one of the most entertaining genre hopping bonkers films you will ever see with a great score also.

All of the Park vengeance films (favourite is Sympathy for Mr Vengeance.) Plus his earlier Joint Security Area.

Really like Tsukamoto's stuff up to Vital. Particularly like Gemini but Vital was pretty damn impressive too.

Keep an eye out for a film called One Nite in Mongkok (their spelling.) It has a tremendous plot that keeps building, climaxing with a devastating sequence of violence that just goes on and on and leaves you desperately upset. Stunning film.

Sky High is actually a Japanese film.

The synopsis:

A serial killer and his henchwoman -- looking to create a supernatural cataclysm for evil ends -- literally rip the heart out of Mina (Yumiko Shaku), who's engaged to Kanzaki (Shosuke Tanihara) the detective investigating the bizarre string of homicides. But the gumshoe gets more than he bargained for when he hunts down Mina's murderers and finds his dead fiance trapped in a ghostly state of limbo in director Ryuhei Kitamura's stylish flick.

I need to see more Akira Kurasowa movies especially The Hidden Fortress after finding out it heavily influenced much of star wars.
All I've seen so far is Throne of Blood. I have Kung Fu Hustle that I got from big lots but I just haven't found the time to sit down and watch a full length movie in a while.

Kurosawa is my favorite director and The Hidden Fortress is one of his best. You can look at my avatar ;)
This movie is also the most lightest and funny of Kurosawa movies, with much humour and adventure.
Throne of Blood is a very good adaptation of a Shakespeare novel, with a solid interpretation by Toshiro Mifune (his best from him in my opinion is still on Seven Samurai), but if you want to see a better adaptation from a Shakespeare tragedy, and probably the Magnum opus of Kurosawa filmwork, go watch Ran.
It is the polar opposite of the lightness on The Hidden Fortress. This is a deep and devastating drama. It is so nihilistic that after you finish the film, you'll lose your faith in humanity (humanism is afterall the main thematic on Kurosawa films), and begin to question our motivations and human condition. For that alone it is rewarding to watch this film. Note also the cinematography in this film and the use of bright lights and vivid colours, due to the fact that Kurosawa was almost blind in his late years.
Another movie similar in visual style and scope of Ran is Kagemusha. Who thanks to George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola that help to produce this movie (on that time Kurosawa was suffering from a depression that he even attempt suicide, and totally ignored by the Japanese movie studios and criticized by movie critics), but albeit inferior to Ran in my opinion.

And these are in my opinion his best movies:
- Rashomon
- Ikiru
- Seven Samurai
- The Hidden Fortress
- Kagemusha
- Ran

I didn't included Dersu Uzala because i haven't watched this movie yet, so i don't have any opinion about it, but seems to be a very good one too.

Oh my god yes I'd almost forgotten about that one.
Zhang Zi Yi's voice in the CGI TMNT movie is like smooth audio sex.

I watched Seven Samurai too as well as Rashomon.
Along with those 2 I've so far seen Ikaru, High and Low, Throne of Blood, & Hidden Fortress.
Unfortunately TCM didn't play Ran and Kagemusha but I did record most of the movies excluding the last ones that aired at past 4am.

The most recent one I've seen was the Wangan Midnight movie (the newest one). I was surprised on how much I liked it. Lately though, I've been in the mood to watch some Battle Royale (if they followed the novel a little more closely, I think this movie would've been better because the story seemed a little too bland).

Everyone should see Attack the Gas Station, it is wonderful.

Oldboy and The Bird People of China are excellent too.

Have there been any good Asian horror movies recently? It's been a long time since I've seen any new ones and I am really in the mood for a scary movie.

How similar are Japonese horror movies to American ones? Do they use the same conventions and cliche's often?

Jap horror movies are all about tension and atmosphere, though they have created and exploited and exhausted their own conventions over the years. American horror movies are often just teen crap.

Definitely see Ran, it's one of the most powerful works of Asian directing and probably his masterpiece in my opinion (I've seen quite a bit of his work). Dreams (also by Kurasawa) is also very good. I'd recommend Sanjuro and Yojimbo (earlier works of Kurasawa's) too, but they're not quite at the level of Ran or Dreams.

I'm also sort of a fan of the Vengeance trilogy by Korean director Park Chan wook, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance being my favorite of the three.

What the good doctor said, pretty much! I'm a fan of all kinds of horror movies, but American horror movies are very rarely genuinely scary, while I get creeped out by Asian horror all the time. It might be because I'm more used to all the tropes of American horror, but I agree that they're definitely more atmospheric. Asian horror often does more Lovecraftian type horror too, which strongly appeals to me.

Strangely enough, one of the few American horror movies in recent years that really shook me up was our remake of Ringu. I think they actually did a better job atmosphere-wise than the original, and had a better ending too, although the Sadako in the American version can't even begin to compare to the one in the original. I wish someone would combine the two movies!

I really liked the first Saw but just the first. And I also prefer the more lovecraft like horror 'cause giant heavy breathing guy with a sharp weapon seems kinda easy of heard coming and kill.

Kurosawa rarely puts a foot wrong. The only one I didn't like is Kagemusha, it left me bored. But everything else is editing heaven. Throne of Blood, Yojimbo, Ran, Rashomon, Red Beard, Hidden Fortress, and of course Seven Samurai are all essential.

Takeshi Kitano is a director worth watching. Sometimes called "Beat" Takeshi. He was the tutor in Battle Royale, but he's a great actor/writer/director as well.

I quite like the passing in all the ones I've seen. There's plenty of those slow quite shots that let you take everything in. And even if you find older movies rather "slow" that's fine with these because you've got subtitles to read.

I just watched Ip Man 2. It's funny how stereotypically bad the Japanese are in the first Ip Man movie and then how they make the British in Hong Kong the bad guys in the sequel. Anyway, I like the fight scenes and the very end of the movie was hilarious.
