Ok people, crunch time, what is the best weapon of ff XII..

In your comment feel free what other gear you lke to pair with your weapon of choice............

I intentionally left out the wyrmhero blade because you do not require it for any part of the game as all the big bosses have to be defeated in order to get it and also it is insanely powerful.

This should be an interesting one!!!!!!!!!

I'm saying the Masamune but only because I've yet to test the Whale Whisker and add the caveat that the Genji Gloves are pretty much mandatory to make it "ZOMG Uber" otherwise the title goes to the Zodiac Spear by a narrow margin. I'm not really a fan of any of the others.

Tournesol: Such a bitch to assemble. Otherwise an awesome greatsword.

Yagyu Darkblade: All ninja swords do dark damage, this makes them worse than useless against enemies who absorb dark attacks. Personally, I hate ninja swords in general. If they had variable elements and you could dual wield or at least use a shield with them, I might feel differently. As it is though, ninja swords are teh suck.

Whale Whisker: Untested, so I can't say. It looks even better than the Masamune on paper, but then again so does the Golden Axe.

Ultima Blade: Situationally useful since its strength is based on the wielder's HP.

Excalibur: Holy element, blarg. Its saving grace is that it's one of the few "ultimates" that is relatively easy to get.

Fomalhaut: Guns are completely obsolete by endgame. You can do more damage barehanded. Bows, crossbows and telekinesis are all preferable.

Durandal: This is actually a really good weapon. I hate assembling stuff through the bazaar, but I went through it for this one and I was actually satisfied. One handed swords are win for much of the game, and the Durandal is the winningest of all.

I voted on the Escalibur, only because of it's accessibility and holy elemental damage. I'll admit, it's comes in great against the undead from those creatures of the necrohol, but it can be a pain in the ass when dealing with holy-elemental creatures.

The other weapons like the tournesol and zodiac spear are such a pain in the ass to find...assuming you don't cheat and use chat forums like this to guide you along the way.

Tournesol, hands down. Its one of the most powerful weapons, better evasion, and you don't have to already kill some of the most powerful enemies in the game to obtain it.

My second choice would probably be Zodiac Spear, but I don't have it at the moment, cause I opened a chest that I wasn't supposed to...D:

I'll disagree outrightly. In fact, bows and crossbows are retarded later on simply because guns pierce armor, something that is much more useful than high attack rating.

But as for my fav...
I'm the sole voter (so far, and probably for good) for the Yagyu Darkblade. Reason being, it's dark attack devastates Yiazmat AND it's got a not too bad chain attack possibility....all in all most useful because it's so helpful in beating one of the hardest bosses in the game.

You can't judge the usefellness of a weapon based on a single enemy. You can just aswell use the Fomalhaut and load it with Dark Shots.

I have to say I love the Masamune, but I'm going with either the Zodiac Spear or the Tournesol. Simply because, you need to sacrifice an asseccory to make the weapon great. I much rather be able to equip a Ribbon and still be able to deal a great amount of damage.

Leaving the Wyrmhero Blade out was a good option. This blade is shit actually. Yeah, it's really powerful, but it is a lot slower than any of the other weapons in the list up here. And the sound it makes when you use it... urg!

Anyways, I always prefered the 2H swords over the other weapons. When you get the ultimate weapons, you're already powerful enough that shield or not, it doesn't make much difference.

So my vote here goes for the Tournesol. Even though, as Fatalis Prime said, it is a bitch to assemble.

I don't agree that having no shield doesn't matter. I love the Shield + Lure combo. It helps so much versus strong enemies or bosses/rare game/elite marks. It makes your battle quite a bit easier. You have one person taking the damage, he can heal himself constantly since he wouldn't run out of MP fast. You can have a range attacker and a damage dealer with a strong weapon.

I do all that without the use of a shield.

My favourite was the Main Gauche, which isn't even on the list. Equip your tank with that and a Zodiac Escutcheon or Ensanguined Shield, cast Lure/Protect/Shell/Regen on them and you're sorted.
