Final Fantasy IV, it was the first one I played and I still love it today. Even though apparently the PSX version is far harder than the SNES version.

iv was the first final fantasy to have truly deep and emotional characters, cool magic and a great storyline. Also it has even more replay value because of the greatest summoner to ever live RYDIA!!!

I voted II because of the different level up system and memorable characters. And Minwu.

My personal favourite is V, because of the job system and because I've not really had the opportunity to play III yet.

VI, but the original is still hella class.

4? you've got to be kidding me, 5 for an ingenious battle system, and a good storyline.

When I played the GBA version, I sat around forever and a day on Mt. Hobbs trying to get the Cockatrice drop for Rydia. I had Eddy hitting harder than Cecil. Awww, yeah. I like him better than Cecil, and at the end of the day he had the larger impact. Sure Tellah said it, but Eddy reaped the rewards, because I've been known to call people Spoony Bastards to this day :p

VI is easily the best of the first six. It had characters with in depth backgrounds and emotions and the story was very good (a change from: "Oh no! The crystals that protect us are in danger!") and gave you some freedom/wasn't too linear, especially post-Floating Continent.

That's true, i really liked this final fantasy because involved no crystals. Magicite had form of a crystal? so what? those were not called crystal and that is enough for me.
The best of all is its complex 14 playable character storyline. You could even skip events if you want, making the story happen the way you want.

VI is the tops for me in the classics list. It has a good compromise between party switching and the quests, there's a good balance between the campy humor and seriousness in the story, and the story itself was captivating.

Only played FFI,V and VI. Final Fantasy VI was great, I would like to see it made into a hollywood film. :]
I have been playing FFVI fanatically lately. I have become so crazy abot the game and its characters. I admit, I didn't quite understand all of the characters the first time, but I've replayed it four times since I bought it a month ago, and I finally see what so many people have been saying all of these years. Mog, Umaro and Celes are my favorites. Celes' Theme is very emotional, as it reminds me of her relationship with Locke and a certain Opera scene.
Sounds like the words of a fanboy, but I don't care. x)

I love the game for that reason. I dislike having too many choices for parties in the Final Fantasy games after IV. VI isn't bad, but in the later games all your characters can end up with the same abilities anyway. I feel that one has to be more strategic most times in the earlier games.

ffVI, my 1st ff game that i ever played!
The characters tough many, they are very well presented in the game...and the jokes and storyline were very good.
The one of my most memorable moments in ff series is the Opera Scene, funny yet classical!!! Followed by Aerith death then ffx endings then finnaly When The occurias appear to Ashe!

FFVI easily, though FFIV comes close. Theres no denying FFIII's groundbreaking gameplay design though. FFV get merits for killing off a main character (before Aeris) as does FFI for being the first. FFII was just stupid IMO though (after playing D&D for years, min-maxing in that game was a joke).
So yeah, that said: FFVI > FFIV > FFIII > FFV > FFI > FFII in that order.

FF6 tops the charts and I'd argue best in the series. Out of the 6, its the last game, so in terms of graphics, its a bit improved.
Characters- With a vast variety of characters one would think that the game wouldn't allow for development and screen time for such a large group. Thats not the case at all, Every character except the optional 3(Mog,GoGo, Umaro) have deep stories and plot. To realize that the main character of the game isn't the main character at all was truely a great moment. Even the NPCs have touching stories and you feel for them like you do the main characters(ex. Cid).
Story- Such as FF5 had 3 worlds, this game has 2 completely different worlds. You get through the game and you think its over, you encounter the emporer and Kefka. All of a sudden BAM, a shocker and the statues are moved. You wake up from a coma with the world in ruin and stranded on an island. Then you need to find out what happened and get the gang back together again. 2 games in 1, awesome.
Music- Can't argue with this game as having the best music. 7 comes close but can you really beat tunes such as Celes and Terra's theme? Uncomparable.
Thats just my opinion in a nutshell.

I wouldn't say just a bit improved, but a LOT.

Who could forget entire meetings like those with the returners before the party lose sabin while locke spies south figaro?? And the meeting with the emperor??
There are not more character development than in this game, and the best example is Terra, who discovered through the story who she was and finally what she really wanted.

The story here was the most solid of all final fantasy before, and the most variable. You can even try to go kick kefka's "eyes" with some characters missing, but not sure of success because you need 3 parties at that time.
Music- Can't argue with this game as having the best music. 7 comes close but can you really beat tunes such as Celes and Terra's theme? Uncomparable.
This is unquestionable, because it has one of the longest soundtracks, and incredibly enough, almost 99% of it is fully memorable and enjoyable. Try to beat that.

FFVI is my favorite. My second favorite FF classic would be FF (yes that's right, the very first Final Fantasy :P).

For me it's still Final Fantasy IV. Not only was it the game that made me a fan, but it has a great soundtrack, story, and characters you care about and remember years later. Even the the character's you don't play much left an impression.
The ending was also great.

I love FFIV the most as it was the first Final Fantasy I played. I just love the characters and storyline even though I know it all so well now. I'm definitely getting the DS remake when it hits Europe later this year. FFVI comes second because of Kefka alone.

I voted FF3 for the fact that it had a smooth job system, and was innovative in doing so. Also, the story (in the DS remake AND the NES original) rocked imo. Also, I liked how you could implement strategy into the game by having to change jobs to actually be able to beat some bosses (at a sane, non-lvl 99 level).
I dislike FF6, because you can make every character exactly the same. Story and all were good, but the characters are always overpowered demi-gods knowing all magics at the end of the game. That drags it down a lot.

FFVI, outclasses all the earlier titles. A little unfairly too. I'm not sure FFI-III should even be ranked against the (relatively) next gen titles.
