The one soundtrack when you knew you were hooked to Game Music

This may sound rather low-brow but for me the Jet Moto 1 s/t back in 96-97 was IT for me! I loved DKCountry quite a bit but not so much as to look for ways to hear it out of the game)… so when I realized I could play PSx discs (some of them) in my car cd player I almost ***t my pants:) Yea. The Jet Moto series propelled me here. Sadly I rarely ever hear anyone talk about it.

What was your first love?

The soundtrack to Chrono Cross was what turned me on to the world of video game music. I’d already had the soundtracks to FFVII, FFIX, and FFX, but I listened to them simply because they reminded me of games I’d enjoyed. The Chrono Cross soundtrack, however, opened me up to all different kinds of VGM, and finding/enjoying it inspired me to search for other albums on the Web, which is how I found GH. It’s my favorite soundtrack, even after all this time.

To this day, I still haven’t played Chrono Cross.

Lots of game music discussions going on right now. Anyway for me it was Baladium’s Drive from Klonoa 1. I had a game save right before the fight with Baladium only so that I could listen to the music… Eventually I began recording the music on audio cassettes via microphone, which sounded horrible. Many years later, I’m here 🙂

Sonic the Hedgehog. Lol Still some of the catchiest tunes I’ll ever hear.

Chrono Trigger was also awesome along with FFVII in my earlier days of game music.

The first game that got me into game music? Medievil for the PS1, that was one awesome soundtrack (sounded kinda like Danny Elfman’s music) and it added humor to the game, while still fitting in to the style.. SIR DANIEL FORTESQUE ALL THE WAY!

My first console was a Sega Genesis, back in the nineties. The two games that started the nostalgia was The Lion King and Sonic Spinball, which was hella boring at first but became a favorite later on. But I’ve got to say the one game music that got me hooked, particularly because I listened to it for approximate 75% of my early adolescent life, it for long periods of time, in the car, at night, was that of Pokemon.

I thought it was the sht when the little Pikachu would follow you in Yellow Version! Remember that sht? I remember first playing Yellow version at Walmart and I think somebody pulled a super-ass cheat on the savegame; Weedle, Pidgeoto, Ratatata — any fcking pokeman you caught — followed you, like the Pikachu. I speant coutless hours trying to rediscover that cheat, and was very dissapointed when faced with the prospect that I quite possibly dreamed the entire event… But Gold and Silver were the bloody shts big time, in a good way, musicwise.

Yes! Yes! Me too! I hooked two big ghetto-ass three-foot thrift-store speakers to my telly and let that sht play for weeks on end. I guess that’s why my genisis don’t work now, but the sucker sure as hell held up back then. :smrt:

Originally, I had done an "experimental" video game collab for a CD. Since then, I’ve been listening to VG music… a lot more often.

But, I think I’d have to give credit to Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. They have some pretty epic/addictive themes (mainly the Aqua-Magma; Groudon-Kyogre-Rayquaza battle themes).

Hmmm… what got me into game music… Well I think Pokemon Silver (my first Pokemon game) made me appreciate game music more. Probably because it was also my first RPG (well, actually Earthbound was my first, but I hated it and quit after an hour), and it was the first time I experienced such a slow game. You can just walk around in a city and enjoy the music because you don’t need to be on your toes for enemies. I didn’t really get into game music until after I played Kingdom Hearts, though. The KH2 OST is my favorite OST ever. I have lots of game OSTs engraved fully into my memory that I can basically listen to in my head.

Final Fantasy VI has my all time favorite OST. Very first video game OST I ever downloaded and still love. No theme on that ost I hate. Made me start to love music from a video game series. I also love the Zelda: LTTP OST, too.

Then I started on with other FFs, such as FF5. I don’t know why so many people hate that game’s OST. I think its wonderful.

I got the ost to FF3 ("Dancing Mad") as a birthday present a long time ago, and I played it so many times…

Actually, before that I was hooked to gaming music thanks to the second verse of the song "The Legend" from the SNES RPG Arcana. The tune was really plaintive and struck at my heart… then when I finally reached the last boss, the music was a blaring upbeat version of that verse. Back before I knew about emulation or ripped music, I used to listen to a MIDI of that last boss theme until my ears fell off – it was such a great song.

Mario Brothers. Till this day I love that games music and diffrent "versions" people come up with. I tell people game music is better then any movie or tv music (most of the time).

I think the first soundtrack I actually bought when they started releasing them (when I found out about them) was the Killer Instinct soundtrack Killer Cuts. Thats when N64 came out. Nintendo right away released various audio cds. Since then it seems companies rarley release game music, they don’t see the fortune they could be making. I woudn’t download them if they would release soundtracks! If I can’t find the soundtrack I am stuck downloading it.

I think one of the first game soundtracks I got was Legend of Mana. It was one of the first games I remember playing that had a vocal track that I actually wanted to find a CD for, and when I saw that there actually was a soundtrack for the game, I had to get it.

Before that, I’d gotten FF9’s Melodies of Life on a whim (not knowing it was from FF9), and only a year or so later when I played the game did I realize I’d had and liked the song the whole time. But I guess that doesn’t really count because I hadn’t realized it was a song from a game at the time.

Mine was the score for Red Alert 1, by Frank Klepacki. I used to play RA1 on my dad’s old [old, old old] computer back when I was…well, 7, I guess, and I loved the music more than anything else about the game. [Then RA2 came out and I loved the Armageddon battle tank more than anything else in the world EVER.] It never actually occured to me until I discovered GH that I might actually be able to listen to it again, lol! I think the game that got me into Soundtracks was Final Fantasy VIII. I remember going through the opening credits to listen to "Overture." When I found out that one of my friends had the soundtrack I begged him to make me a copy. For my birthday last year he gave me the last cd with the track listings and a picture of the Griver Pendent drawn on it. I still listen to it a lot.

I’m currently in love with the FFX soundtrack because I’m playing the game. The Elder Scrolls 3: Oblivion soundtrack is very pretty.

As old and odd as the Sega Touring Car Championship soundtrack is, that was the one soundtrack that got me hooked. The disc I had broke a few months later however, so I couldn’t listen to it.

About seven years later, I finally found it and thought : WTF was I on.

However, I still enjoy the Daytona USA (home versions + the arcade sequel mind you) soundtracks.

I’d have to go waaaaaay back: Phantasy Star II (I think it was 2, anyway), Shinobi, and Strider for the Sega Genesis. Looking back, I don’t know why I liked the music for Phantasy Star II, but Shinobi and Strider both rocked.

M. Bison’s theme from Street Fighter II, I think, was the first tune that made me sit up and say, "whoa, what’s that?" It was pretty cool, and it suited him (being the last guy in the game).

Honestly, it took a few games to start my VGM music obsession. It was these games that I noticed the excellent music, first, before anything. And here they are in no particular order. There’s more, but these come to mind first and foremost.

Darius Gaiden [Saturn]
Thunder Force V [Saturn]
Blast Wind [Saturn]
Dragon Ball Z ~ Hyper Dimension [Super Famicom]
Skies of Arcadia [Dreamcast]
Castlevania ~ Symphony of the Night [PS1]

Chrono Trigger Original Sound Version.

I was discouraged about the game at first when my older bro downloaded the ROM many years back. I thought the artwork was too Dragonball-ish and just watched as my brother played the opening sequence.

The first time I heard Peaceful Days was probably my moment of recognition. Even to this day, the Chrono Trigger OSV remains a powerful bookmark in which I discovered VGM.

For me, it was the Chrono Trigger soundtrack! The music sounded so epic and amazingly good for being on the SNES! Ever since, I’ve been the a huge video game music fanatic! It was both Frog and Magus’ themes that drew me in the most.

Megaman 2 was the first soundtrack that made me think VG music could be its own art form. Then Chrono Trigger came out and took it to a whole new level.

11-09-2007, 05:14 PM
For me it was Grandia. The music from that game was in fact a main inspiration in learning to play the piano – so that some day I would eventually be able to play something from that game. And it was all worth it, because I eventually bought the sheet music book, so now I can 😀

I suppose other games contributed – Castlevania Bloodlines had a great soundtrack. That probably also sparked an interest (after so much searching I finally found the soundtrack online :p ).

In fact, without these games, I probably wouldn’t have any interest in music at all.

Some people have mentioned FF VI, which was (and still is, like so many of us say) one of my favorites. Back when I was an absurdly dramatic teenager, running on hormones and caffeine, the Dark World theme seemed like an appropriate song for my life. Oy. Plus, I loved how catchy so much of the music was.

TMNT was an early favorite, too, but carried many bad associations with it because that game was impossible.

I’ve loved video game music about as long as I can remember. My faves when I was a kid were Sonic 1 & 2, Street Fighter II, Castlevania: Dracula X, Mega Man X, The Revenge of Shinobi, Zelda: OoT, and Streets of Rage, but the games that really got me into listening to the stuff outside of the context of actually playing the game were Super Smash Bros. Melee (by reminding me of all that great Nintendo music I grew up with, as well as introducing me to stuff I hadn’t encountered), then Metroid Prime, and then Final Fantasy X.

I’ve always just been a lurker, but finally i was enticed to post.
I have an obsession with both film and game soundtracks, hell practically have an external hard-drive dedicated to them lol.

But for game music it would probably have been three soundtracks simultaneously that got me into game music as a kid.

Legend of Zelda: a Link to the past – This one is just plagued with great game music, Especially the more subtle tracks like the dungeon music…super simple, but idk it just pulled me in.
Jurassic park on snes – Just the one track, played in the mountain region..used to let grant just sit there for hours to hear the track while i was doing whatever else in my room.
and my all time favorite game soundtrack: Super Metroid – emphasis on the track "Brinstar – red soil & swampy" just loved it, dark and moody.

I suppose it’s safe to say that i am a bit of an snes fanboy.
But film and video game music in general is some of, if not the best music out there, it blends so many genres and often times is much more intricate then anything else out there (obviously this wouldn’t encompass classical music, but modern game and film music incorporates it so heavily, that it often rivals it).

I’m also a sucker for the Music in the Silent Hill series, Ended up doing my own renditions of about 30 or so tracks from the series total.

I love the Super Metroid soundtrack when playing the game, but I get impatient with the tracks when I’m listening to them by themselves. Anyone else feel that way? Is there anything really interesting going on in this soundtrack (except for maybe "Brinstar")?

well for me it has always made excellent wallpaper music while working, or painting ect. but that is soundtracks for me in general, I usually have a massive list of mixed ost’s compiled based on mood…and for darker pieces, that brinstar track always makes the cut.

The first game that actually got me to realise the greatness that could lie in VGM was the music from The Last Ninja on the C64. I was only 11 years old when I played it, but the songs really got stuck in my head. The first time I started listening to VGM outside of the game though was with FFVII like so many others. That got me into playing the piano and checking out other VGM as well as classical music. So long story short… FFVII changed my musical life:)

This may sound a little unusual, but for me the first soundtrack that made me realize that I was hooked to game music would be the "Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" soundtrack that came with the Nintendo Power subscription last year because it was the first soundtrack I listened to on an mp3 player I tried. Together, this and the mp3 player I tried it on made me realize for the first time that I loved video game music. Afterwards, I bought an mp3 of my own (a PSP system) to quench my musical thirst, and I’ve been with it every day since.

Banjo-Kazooie, actually. Best Buy gave out the 17-track OST as a preorder bonus. I actually bought the game from EB instead since Best Buy got it a day late, but I kept my shirt and CD from the reservation. Prior to that, I had actually recorded game music using my tape deck, but B-K was the first game I actually owned a true sound recording for. (FFVII was the first import CD I ever bought, though).

Also, to the person who on the first page mentioned Chrono Cross, I had the CD for at least four years prior to owning the game, which in my opinion was mediocre at best (I never bothered to play more than five hours or so of it). I still listen to the music very frequently, but you made me think of that when I read your post.

I knew I was addicted to this shit when I started listening to the Megaman and Sonic series’ games…

30 GB of this stuff later, and at 20 years old, I’ve been dedicated to this type of music ever since, besides Techno, Jazz, Rock, Metal, Gospel, and R&B…

As a kid, Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt.

As a fan, it’s a tie between Super Metroid, Sonic the Hedgehog 2/3/Knuckles, and Donkey Kong Country.

Since then, I’ve garnered a few ‘all-time’ favorites: Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VI, Pokemon Red/Blue, Pokemon Gold/Silver, Final Fantasy VII, FF VIII, Tales of Phantasia… the list is too long to really delve into I guess.

*points at various Megaman games* Was probably Megaman 4 that totally got me hooked on game music . . . but if it wasn’t that, it was either Sonic 3 or Phantasy Star IV. Chiptunes for the win, baby!

lol i never really bothered, i felt gutted though when i sold my snes and the games back in 95 for a used PSX. Now since i got a snes and a load of my old games back (good ole Ebay) listening to the music brings back memories.
And the music is really good being honest, thinking about it the snes (for me) has some of the best in game soundtracks.

Recent Games between PS1 AND 3 i find the final fantasy series and Metal Gear Solid Series have some decent tracks (well from metal gear solid 2).

If i went through my games i might suggest more, but it seems to be the snes that had the most and best.

Oh, definitely Chrono Chross. I’d enjoyed some catchy tunes before that, say with Mario and Final Fantasy but that was the first time I ever really stopped to listen. It wasn’t just good, it actually moved me.

It was the first game OST I ever bought, actually the first one I ever looked for. So if it weren’t for that game I might not be quite as into game music as I would have been. I might have gone on thinking that game soundtracks didn’t even exist.

Chrono Trigger, Okami, Sonic, Devil May Cry and the original Mario Bros. also receive an honorable mention in the ‘Rock My Socks" category.

I’ve always loved video game music since Super Mario Bros., but the day i acknowledged and realized that love, was when i burned my very first CD full of Super Smash Bros. Melee music, literally the first CD i ever burned. From then, i’ve been on a quest to download all the epic songs from my childhood games and the games i play now, plus worthy remixes. I have more video game songs than anime + movie ost + normal music COMBINED :3

I’d probably have to say that it was Super Mario World/All of my Zelda games that hooked me on game music, and I was always like "Oh man, I wish I could find something to get this music with!" and, well here I am. Now my library is cluttered with game music, which is awkward when someone asks to see my iPod or something (especially a girl, haha :-D)

Probably Riven: The Sequel to Myst. It was the first soundtrack I’d ever heard in a videogame that was like "Wow… This is something I’d actually listen to outside of flipping switches and turning dials." Bought it in Sam Goody of all places. It might also have something to do with that game being the first (Along with Tomb Raider 1) I owned for PS1. My mom bought the PS1 specifically for Riven.

I have been playing games since I was 1/2 and my brother got his first Sega Megadrive in 1992, and always like the games+music, but when I was about 13 i really wanted to play altered beast again, I did some research on the net and found out what emulators were.

I couldn’t believe people had invented such things, I instantly downloaded Altered Beast and I guess as soon as I heard that Title Screen and First Level Soundtrack I started to really start listening to more and more VGM… and here I am today.

Lunacy / Torico (Thread 53969) was probably the first game that actually drew my attention to the music. The game has such a quiet atmosphere it’s impossible not to get lost in the soundtrack.

I also regularly listened to my Sega Saturn music once I discovered some could be played through a normal CD player, especially Tomb Raider (the immortal Nathan McCree soundtrack) and Wipeout (Thread 53985), by Cold Storage. Memories…

Then came the search and come to find out of even more remixes. Either way I loved the Tekken soundtracks in how they mix genres creating a different sound it’s not techno but you can dance or fight to it yet you’re hearing choirs and strings, hip hop and rock all in the same song.

As far as purely listening to game music, I’d have to say it’s Zelda game. I certainly loved OOT’s music, but it was really Wind Waker that got me into game music – great tunes in that game.

So, I had a friend who like FF like a lot. She played the Piano and was playing FF. I thought… Ohh~ wow I like that song, what is it? Then that’s how I was introduce to "video game music."

It was liek meh intro to video game music. I played some games later on, thinking that all of them had good music it but yeah. <.<; When you play a game and the music is playing you can’t help but notice the looping and after a while I kind hated some songs that I’d otherwise like outside of the game. But I guess, the music that I like from playing the game was Rez, Kingdom Hearts (so sad and happy I was like T___T), The World Ends with You, Okami (maybe I have this thing for Asian music? ._.; Or maybe video games is the only place I’m expose to it? I dunt know), Katamari and Jet Set Radio. DRR music is okeh to though I wasn’t a huge fan of techno (even though jst is techno to xD). :O

I feel a bit like what? Why is the only music I like from squeenix? >.< I feel like such a fan. But, I haven’t heard any good sound tracks anywhere else~ but at the same time I’m limiting my video game music tastes to games I play and games I like. That’s is a BIG contributing factor.

Hmm…

I don’t know about soundtrack, but as for the one track that got me into listening to video game OSTs… It’s the BGM for the Birdman mode in Pilot Wings 64. It was by far the most peaceful, and most beautiful track I ever heard. I used to go to the Sound Test in PW64, turn on the Birdman BGM, and relax back in the day. The Pilot Wings 64 soundtrack overall is pretty mediocre, but the Birdman theme hits home with me.

Other notable soundtracks that kept me going are Star Fox 64, Chrono Trigger, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Skies of Arcadia, and Grandia. Grandia is special because it was the first (and only) game soundtrack that made me want to play the game instead of the game making me want the soundtrack.

I distinctly remember when I was 10 years old using a handheld cassette recorder to record songs from the Sonic 2 soundtrack played in sound test mode. In between tracks, I would interject with some talking like I was a Radio DJ.

Many years later, here I am, still enjoying gaming soundtracks…just not pretending I’m broacasting them on the radio.

I personally think it would be The Earthworm Jim music that got me when I was young.Hereing Tommy Tallerico’s music live is one of the biggest reasons I would love to go see Video Games Live. What can I say I’ve been hooked on gaming music since I can remember. It’s funny to see my friend’s faces, when they come into my car and hear only Game soundtracks.

Final Fantasy IV- Airship Theme. Once I heard this, I felt… I had heard something that was I was always waiting to hear. That music wasn’t just strings and drums; that video game music was an ignorable series of beeps and squeals. It was… Beautiful. That games can be enjoyable for more than just graphics and difficult stages. I love the music of FFIV and still hold it close as the beginning of what made believe that game music was possible of becoming that of what it is to day for me and now others.

The two that definetly got me really excited and interested in vgm was Ocarina of Time and Perfect Dark. I grew up playing both of them when I was younger, and didn’t really notice the music. Then, as I got older, I went back and played them both – and I was stunned. The music was amazing! And so, here I am 🙂

I also really liked the DOOM 64, Duke Nukem and all the Mario soundtracks.

The soundtrack that hooked me onto game music would probably be Final Fantasy VIII. Just so many varieties of sounds on that album that it stuck in my head. A few notables would be Final Fantasy VII, Parasite Eve and Max Payne. But FFVIII was definately the one that got me interested in both FF games and game music.

But really, its the music of games now a days that gets me more and more pumped for game rips and soundtracks, with scores like The Darkness Metal Gear Solid 2-4 and Assassin’s Creed out there.

Ahh, gosh, it’s hard to say, but I guess for me it’s a split between "Final Fantasy III/VI’s" "Terra/Tina Theme," the ending credits song for "Link to the Past," and any number of different songs from "Chrono Trigger," including "Frog’s Theme," "Schala’s Theme" (one of my all-time favorites), and the theme for "Zeal."

While "Terra/Tina" has been very influential for me ~ listening to the vocal arrangement on the "Final Fantasy: Pray" album on rainy days ~ and the ending credit theme for "Link to the Past" STILL conjures up great imagery and emotion for me, I knew I was really in trouble with video game music when I bought the Original Sound Version for "Chrono Trigger," super enthusiastic that they had "deleted/unreleased songs" like "Battle 2" and "The Singing Mountain." "Chrono Trigger" was and still IS the game I look for the most remixes to on OverClocked Remix and elsewhere, and of course I know a huge part of me loving the game IS the music, which also made me a big fan of MITSUDA Yasunori.

Ahh, sorry for the long comment! >.<;;

I could jump on the band wagon and say Zelda or Sonic the Hedgehog, or something else super old-school like Rolan’s Curse for Game Boy, but I’ll be true to myself and say that I think I really took notice in videogame music once more complex, orchestral scores started surfacing i.e. Castlevania SotN and FFVII.

Don’t get me wrong though, scores for old games are fantastic and have definitely laid the foundation for videogame scores down the line, but SotN was actually the first game that actually made me drive down to an import shop and order the soundtrack.

Not too sure. I think Ocarina of Time’s did it for me while I was playing it for the first time. The actual legit soundtrack that got me into collecting more would have to be the Silent Hill 4 Limited Edition OST by Akira Yamaoka. Incredible.

The early Megaman – games for the NES got me running around humming in the schoolyard when I was a kid so I guess that would be my first VGM – hook.

The music and sounds of Chrono Trigger by Yasunori Mitsuda really got me to listen in a new way when it came to VGM. This soundtrack still pops up in my Winamp from time to time, and I still play the game once in while. If you’ve barely listened to the soundtrack, then go get it and take a good long listen. Super Mario World for the SNES, Super Probotector and of Course Zelda III also had some very good tunes.

I’ve been hooked ever since, as a 6-year old, I popped Yogi Bear into my Super Nintendo and played a video Game for the first time. This is probably also the reason why I love the Yogi SNES Music so much (face it, who here DIDN’T like the music in the very first game they played? (Old atari machines and Intellivision/colecovisions don’t count)

ha, really? K, didn’t know Intelly had an advanced enough sound chip to make music. Then again, there’s pitfall 2 on atari 2600…

The sound chip was very primitive and I think many games only had sound effects but it could achieve some kind of music, although they were mostly short loops or jingles.
If you’re curious, you can find more or less correct midi adaptations of some of them here : http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/mattel/intellivision/index-classic.html
You probably won’t enjoy them if you haven’t played the games back then, though ^^’

PS :
Sorry, I can’t provide a real recording but you can hear some on google videos or try with an emulator.
I’ve been looking for Intellivision soundtracks for years but never found one. I guess the general interest for those is quite low. Well, as I’ve recently bought an Intellivision (again) I might do it myself… one day 😉

Yeah, I heard burgertime intelly. Sounds surprisingly similar to the NES version. (you can find THAT version on Playthenes)…in fact…it’s just about as good…(gasp)was the intelly’s sound chip almost as good as the simplest part of the NES sound chip? XD

Still, Yogi SNES was a classic for me. I grabbed the SPC. I think I might record the OST from there and put it up somewhere.

I didn’t know there was a NES version of BurgerTime.
And guess what, I prefer the Intelly version of the music 😉
Of course, someone will often prefer the version he grew up with.

By the way, I just discovered that the sound chip of the Intellivision (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Instrument_AY-3-8910) is the same as (or a variant of) the one used by MSX, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC and many more.
So I think the chip was in fact quite ok but that the console lacked CPU power and memory to exploit it fully.
Or the devs didn’t have enough experience, time and/or money to do so.
Check this demo that was done for Intelly in 2002 in an emulator and see what it is capable of : http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=9026 🙂

Hey, I hear ya. Just like somebody might prefer the NES version of the SMB theme over the SNES one (but I grew up with the SNES one)

Also, wow, I guess the intelly sound chip WAS pretty capable.

Completely Agree. when I lived in Puerto Rico, the games scenarios were exactly alike with my surroundings. great OST

Guess it started with Street Fighter II back in the day… I loved Balrog’s (US) Vegas theme. And… when being released from hospital after a leg surgery as a kid… I would sit on the backseat of our car and do nothing but listening to Ken’s and (of course) Balrog’s stage themes.

But the Tekken 2 soundtrack really got me into it. And in this 12 years (I got my first PlayStation including Tekken 2 at Christmas in 1997) I’ve never had another soundtrack love bigger than that again.

Although Tekken 5 / T5:DR comes pretty close…

Well… that’s my story…

Following that was "Eyes on Me" from FFVIII, which prompted me to search for more Final Fantasy music (Admittedly, I got into the game rather late…pun not intended). Lots of game music discussions going on right now. Anyway for me it was Baladium’s Drive from Klonoa 1. I had a game save right before the fight with Baladium only so that I could listen to the music… Eventually I began recording the music on audio cassettes via microphone, which sounded horrible. Many years later, I’m here 🙂

just looked this up and it is awesome! reminds me a lot of celtic-flavored yasunori mitsuda with the energy of motoi sakuraba

for me, the first mp3 i really wanted to track down was maverick hunter zero from megaman x5. but the moment i knew i was hooked on vgm was when i played megaman x at six years old or so. discovering midi at around age 11 blew my mind.. being able to listen to vgm on demand without having to load up a save file is all i ever wanted. i dunno why i never made the connection between vg midis being available and vg mp3s being available until years later.

i definitely recorded music on tape recorders too. did that with x’s intro stage from megaman x4 and the saturos battle from golden sun.

For me, I think it’s a toss-up between Stewart Chatwood’s score for "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" and Troels Brun Folmann score for "Tomb Raider Legend". For the longest time, I always thought of Video Game music as catchy "battle tunes" and noise filling in the background and nothing more. But, for whatever reason, I hear SOT and TRL and it suddenly occurred to me how theatrical were. Whenever I replayed them, I couldn’t wait to arrive to levels like the Prison or the Baths (in Prince of Persia), or just visit Croft Manson and Nepal to listen to those beautiful themes. At a much later date Kow Otani’s score for "Shadow of the Colossus" just solidified my adoration for Video Game Scores completely.

way too many to list here, but the 4 disgaea soundtracks among many others like "wario land: shake it!" and most final fantasy games have been favorites of mine. Disgaea 4’s soundtrack made my soundtrack game of the year this year.

Actually for me, it was always the other way around. Playing games like Super Mario World, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, Mega Man X, TUrtles In Time, Maximum Carnage, among countless others……listening to in game music made me wish soundtracks were released. At that time, I only knew of a KI soundtrack as it came with the game but disapppointed it wasn’t how it sounded in the game (although I did like some of the songs from the cd). When the whole download off the net thing became big, I searched the net for game rips & eventually found this site.

But the answer to the original question may have been Mortal Kombat. I’m not sure of I liked the game or music first. But I remember constantly putting quarters in the arcade machine. But I don’t know if it was to keep playing or to keep listening to the Character Selection theme (I kept the choice as Rayden I think. But rather than select it, I let it stay until the announcer just said the character’s name as I don’t think it had a timer like Killer Instinct. I did this to listen to the theme long as possible), the song I was & still am most obsessed with from MK 1 & 3. Hell for all I know, it could have been both.

Currently, I just put in the video game discs for Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 and Arkham City for:
Ultimate Alliance 1 – The Watcher cut scene – love the dialogue & music so that’s why. It’s the sole reason I still have the game.
Ultimate Alliance 2 – Game music (especially Character Selection & Electro/Tanker Man Phase 2). This is why I till have the game.
Arkham City – To beat it & Alternate costumes. But also for the Main Title/Main Menu music. I do have the score. But I can’t compare to how it sounds in the game.

My first console was NES. In terms of that system….ExciteBike.

Others came to my head since my last post as possibilities:
Desert Strike; Return To The Gulf )especially the Opening/Main Title Theme

Still can’t find THE ONE that hooked me to Game Music. However, I feel like I’m getting close…..

It was between hearing R4 and Tobal 2’s soundtracks back in the PS1 days that sealed the deal for me. They are spectacular soundtracks that still stand out now despite more than a decade having passed since their original release. Best OST purchases I have ever made.

Probably Hitman 2 by Jesper Kyd, "47 Makes a Decision" being one of the most epic themes ever composed for a video game.

Followed by MOH: Frontline – "Arnhem"

First video game music that I got addicted to was Mega Man 3 on the NES. After that it was a lot of the Mega Man games that I loved the tunes in over other video games. Next in the timeline I played and got hooked on Final Fantasy VII (yes cliche I know right). But the number 1 game franchise that the music has had a huge effect on my life is the Shin Megami Tensei series. There hasn’t been many other games that really hooked me. Plus after I started playing RPGs by ATLUS, I put the final nail in my Square Enix coffin and never looked back 😛

Phealan’s Zool I and II CD soundtracks for the Commodore CD32. I heard them years afterwards because my dad found them in the attick and I just remember thinking it was so funky. What a day, heard for the first time those 2 cds and also Nigel Mansell’s and Brutal Sports Football both also for the CD32.

Since discovered that some music is better as original mod, but usually the CD is better.

For me it had to be Chrono Trigger’s soundtrack since it was my favorite game at the time (I was 10-11 years old) and, shortly after, the Jet Rider soundtrack (gotta love that main theme). Abe’s Oddisee also had a huge impact on me and made me realize just how important music can be for setting up mood in a game. Of course, being a fan of older games as well, and having a nerdy friend with access to youtube, I quickly graduated to 8 and 16 bit soundtracks.

I really, REALLY like to customize my games (I’m a big fan of mods as well of course) so now, whenever I get myself an free roaming rpg or rts I usually like to try and see if I can replace the songs in the game with the most appropriate songs from other soundtracks.

Case in point: The Oddworld soundtracks are PERFECT for any fallout game.

I don’t know which soundtrack, made me SURE that I loved game music, but I will have to say that when I heard there was game music being played by orchestras, I was hooked, so I would have to say the first orchestral game music concert was what hooked me. To be honest? The nintendo-like sounds…I don’t know how to express it, I’ve forgotten the format of the music (someone remind me please??) but it’s sounds like Contra: Hard Corps and Langrisser’s IN-GAME MUSIC are seriously underrated! They won’t sound good in any other way! No real bands, orchestra or anything could replace the goodness those sounds!! They only sound good in that in-game format, which is very surprising for me! I don’t know about any older console games who have music that would only sound good in those old console music formats, though.

Virtua Fighter 2 and Nights Into Dreams (sample version) for Sega Saturn.

The Sega Saturn disks back then came with the soundtrack already on the disk so you were able to put it into a CD player and play the music.

Both came with the system and I fell in love with the music immediately. A few years later Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo II and Street Fighter Alpha II would solidify my love for Video Game Music and Fighting Game Music in general but those were probably the first to have a major impact on me.

Virtua Fighter 2 was really impressive. It not only had original themes but their remixes as well. I couldn’t stop listening to them and would always obsess over the music when picking stages. It’s about 13 years later and now I have the music from the game on my iPod and usually listen to it for inspiration.

It was various Sega and Capcom arcade game soundtracks. Arcade games like the Vs. series and Harley-Davidson & L.A. Riders got me into video game music period. I’m 24 and video game music never really grasped me until about 2 years ago I think?

Anyway, the one song that stuck in my head for years was the first level on Kid Icarus for the NES. This was back when I was like 5 or 6. I remember enjoying Donkey Kong Country series’ and Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie’s music a lot as well. There was always the music of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, which always made young me feel like a badass while playing it. Lol. Golden Sun’s music was also very enjoyable.

My teenage years were dominated by 90’s/early 2000’s alternative, grunge, metal, etc. so VGM kinda went on haitus for a long time. It didn’t help that the only games I played during those years were few, and mostly consisted of Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Not only that, the other games I did play were Runescape (which had terrible music at the time), Morrowind (which had great music, but very little of it, so it was repetitive) and Smash Bros. Plus, I was poor, so I couldn’t buy games on a regular basis.

Fast forward to 2010, I start branching my musical interest out via internet radio. Without this, I would never have discovered new artists or sounds that I loved.
In 2012, I finally get a job, so I could pay for games I had missed out on. Starting with my old PS2, I decided to get Xenosaga: Episode I, and that’s what did it. That was the first soundtrack I actually purchased, and I still have it today. ^_^

Even though the first score from a game that I got and listened to often was from THE DIG (mid-90’s), it wasn’t until relatively recently that a game score completely floored me and opened my eyes to what they’ve been providing for games. I really only played the music from THE DIG if I was GM for a sci fi role-playing game and needed some unobtrusive incidental sci fi music. Or for when I read a sci fi book. And then I heard Age of Conan – The Hyborian Age by Knut Avenstroup Haugen. That score (and the wonderful extras that FFShrine friends provided) actually beat out almost every one of my film scores to become one of my all-time favorite scores ever. It is now in the top 5, along with long-beloved film scores. After that came Age of Conan – Rise of the Godslayer. World of Warcraft, Mass Effect and so on.

So, even though I’ve collected film scores since I was a little kid back in the 70’s, it was Knut Avenstroup Haugen’s Age of Conan that got me hooked on Game Music. Although, as with any music, it is a subjective thing. There’s a lot that goes into whether or not I’ll enjoy it. I don’t enjoy it simply because it is game music. No more than if it were film music for a sci fi franchise I happen to love. Also, it needn’t be a a full symphonic treatment either. It could be one person with a synthesizer – as long as it is done right. So, it really isn’t about "game music" for me, per se. As I suspect it is for many here, it is simply about music…period.

Turrican 2 was the one that did it for me. The tunes were and still are quite catchy and epic, and I like the way how Chris H???lsbeck managed to make the most out of his synthesizers sound-wise. 🙂

I shared a bedroom with my older brother until I was 12 years old or do, maybe, which would have been in 1995. At some point, instead of obediently going to sleep as we had been instructed by our parents, we would play a "game" where one person would hum or beep or mumble out a tune from a video game and the other person would have to identify which. I recall that I was much more interested in this game, and that I eventually gave up trying to get the brother to play it due to his lack of interest (though he went on to actually perform music on real instruments while I at best put little colored squares on a midi grid).
I recall specifically incorporating Megaman 3 and Ghosts n Goblins into my turns, and that I took issue with the brother’s pitch choices in replicating the night theme from Castlevania 2.

Also we got the old family television box in the room at some point and could play actual video games instead of sleeping so that may have contributed.

When I had a computer (but before I had internet) I would repeatedly listen to stupid midis that I pulled out of doom wads that I had on a CD instead of actual music off of CDs. Although once I realized Gobliins 2 would play its in-game music on a normal CD player, I probably ruined a few car rides with that.

Years later, Breath of Fire was the first SPC set I downloaded. I do not think there is anything significant about that, but I remember it so I said it. I cannot recall the first nsf for some reason. It was terribly liberating to realize I could listen to music that -I- liked and not have to rely on a store or radio station deeming it fit to be heard.

As long as I can recall, I’ve always had a thing for VGM. Kirby’s Adventure was my very first game and that soundtrack still means a lot to me nowadays. I guess when I first started to realize that I liked VGM (or that I had a thing for music in general lol) was with the Super Smash Bros. Brawl OST. As a kid, I used to go into the sound collection menu and just listen and dance to that consequent amount of music. But what really made me get it was SSB4 last year, when I downloaded the full soundtrack. Since then I’m listening to like 70% OST / 30% other music lol

For me, it would have to be ff6. I can’t actually say when it happened… I’ve been into video game music ever since playing it back as a young adult. i didn’t grow up with video games so I didn’t really get into video games until after I left high school. I can probably link my interest in all things ff to why I started listening to video game music. Something about 6’s aesthetic is so gripping. That’s why I endeavour to hear more video game music over the years. Trying to capture that initial euphoria about it.

Hard to pick a particular title… It definitely started toward the end of the SNES era, but was overt when the N64 came out. It might have been Donkey Kong Country?

I held a cassette recorder up to my tv to capture their soundtracks as a kid.

I did the same to music I liked during the N64 days. Recall recording the soundtrack to Killer Instinct Gold that way.
