This is my first post here. :D

Many people think that i am crazy and that i am not from this planet at all, and not because i listen to videogame music, but because i don't listen to reggaeton or any other mainstream music that is popular in my country Puerto Rico. Some of my friends don't know that i listen to videogame music, but they know that i listen to alot of underground hip hop and they think that is weird, because most of the hip hop i listen to has deep and great lyrics, but they just don't understand them, or simply don't care and they rather listen to reggaeton or mainstream rap and that music has no good content at all. I also listen to alot of old school salsa, and heavy metal too, so i have a pretty open mind for alot of types of music. Of course, i have my favorite and it's still underground hip hop, but videogame music is very important in my life. I love castlevania's music, and also Megaman, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Guilty Gear, F Zero...... damn.. if i mention them all i will never finish. I specially like arranged soundtracks.

I dont get crap from no one.
I'm used to sometimes send game music(that I own) I think is beautiful to some friends via chat, and then they just say "that was a good one" or "beautiful".

Some people insulted me for looking for other computers in my dorm to download the Super Mario Galaxy OST from (stupid RapidShare file limit...). On the other hand, I've had 3 people from my college request copies of the music, so I guess it completely depends on the person.

Personally, I rationalize my love for video game music by comparing it to other instrumental music. Its purpose is to set a tone, a sort of ambient "feel". However, unlike film scores and classical music, the loops of video game music make the tone much more consistent throughout the piece - great for certain activities, like doing homework.

Yes it's a cruel world sometime and yes people do mock you for downloading video game OST's but hey they're just a bunch of insensative bastards who don't understand the beauty of video games so what can ya do? I just ignore them usually

haha, not anymore, when i was younger maybe, but i find the older i get.. the more ppl shrug things off and accept them. also, alot of my friends are either nerds or artists, so they share the love of different types of music. i just dont listen to game music, i also enjoy alot of underground hip hop and indie rock. if someone asks me, "what are you listening to?" my list would be something crazy like: dr who dat? mario galaxy ost, plaid, andrew bird, f zero x guitar arrange, metroid metal, tiger city, russian circles, margot and the nuclear so and so's, daedelus, etc etc.. and most of my friends would name off stuff i havent heard or that most havent heard either.

I find most people are baffled by the time you say videogame, which is usually the first thing you say. Becuase it's from a videogame it's stupid or weird or silly, but if these people would take time to sit down and listen to some of it, they would understand why we do. For us it's not awkward because we appreciate the music for the fact that it's great material and we understand that it was composed for listening purposes. So if we like it in game why should we not like it outside of the game? If someone truely is a lover of music, they will not judge something just by how it's presented, be it through a movie, a videogame, a commercial, or whatever else way. If they do, they're pretty shallow for doing so.

Well, my ipod full of VG & anime music, some people ask me why do I listen to "sleeping boring music". I told them the right justice awnser to it. "It not sleeping boring music, it music I grow up listening too and it better then mindless pop music & rap." On that note, people either can like what listen to or suck it up and leave me alone and all other gamers that love this new genre of music. This doesn't happen me alot now of days but I do defend those who wish to listen to this music.

NO because I don't announce it is video game music I just say it is instrumental. Nobody gives a shit. And why should they? Most people I know listen to music I think is dumb or just mainstream bubble gum music.

We are not crazy. We all have a diverse taste in music. I listen to the video game soundtracks, and I listen to popular music as well. However, popular music is sucking as I speak. That's one of the reasons nobody buys CD's anymore. Also, video game music is hard to come by, unless it is from Guitar Hero, or games that use popular music. Doesn't that mean VG OST's are worth more than any other CD? If it wasn't for Galbadia Hotel... I'd be sad and imagining my VG music.
I had a friend who told me that my music is "music with no words." And I said, "No, it's called music with better sound."

Most poeple i know rip on me for my taste in OST's (i dont listen to much other music now though). Luckily i have three friends that do like it (not to my extent) and i give them CD's of it. And when poeple ask me whats on my mp3 i now just say the composers name to shock them into silence. (my mp3 player now is full of 99% OST's) But otherwise Poeple almost seem not to realise the music on games are composed or even there. It's just taken as read that is not good because as many of you have said its not mainstream. I wonder if it's different in Japan.

Something that happened to me just this day: I'm working in a shop, and since the last days I'm playing VGM over the speakers in this shop. In the moment is the 'an cinniuint' OST playing, and three young guys in age about 18 I would say came into the shop. One of them asked, 'what kind of is this relaxing and nice Backgroundmusic ?'. I answered: "this is a playstation OST from Yasunori Mitsuda." They looked a bit embarrased at me, but that was maybe because I'm 27 and they did'nt await this from an 'old man' like me? However, people have to realize that VGM has wide and varied genres, like the user above me said.

I've been able to convince quite a few of the fact that video game music is much more then it may appear. People are hearing me listen to this music and saying: "I like that, where's it from? A video game? Really". Now I'm burning CDs for a bunch of people that never listen to video game music before.

Before telling my Mom that it was video game music that she was listening to, she completely loved the Final Fantasy Vocal Collection I and II. Although this music wasn't played directly in any game all of the music was taken from games. Surprisingly she also like music from the Chrono Cross series, FF Advent children and just about all of the FF Piano collections. She has moved entire CDs to her Mp3 player without even knowing where they originated. :) "Oh CyberSpark you are a sly one". :naughty:

Even though not as popular, video game music probably reaches a greater range of people then most mainstream music. It it something everyone can enjoy. It's the Wii of music. :D

My friend always asks me something like "WHEN are you gonna put something normal on that player of yours!?" or "why do you listen to it anyway?".
I guess I just like to have a musical background that fits the atmosphere. And I always make sure that I got the right tracks to fit in with the places I go to.

Since I was little, I've always wished to be a Game Designer. Always thought there was something amazing in the experience of playing a videogame, and I was always writing stories for future games, or imagining new stages for games I already knew.

Untill I was 15, this was the only possible job for me: being a game designer. But then I went through a dark period, and nothing seemed to matter anymore. I was very sad, and gave up Game Design. Then I failed to graduate school, among other things, and went for almost two years "on standby", trying to know me better, doing some art classes, yoga and stuff.

When I began to feel better, I had decided to study Psychology. But, at the end of a yoga class, something told me "go do your Game Designing", and it felt so right, I instantly told my father "ok dad, that's what I really want to do". Two hours later, without knowing about this incident, my uncle called me about a School that had a Gaming Design class starting in a few weeks.

Long story short (yeah, I know it's already long :) ), I'm about to start my second year at Game Design (I'm 21), and I'm loving it.

I told all of this just to express how important gaming is in my life, and to share that it feels really good to meet daily with people who think (like me) Street of Rage 2 music rocks, or who I can discuss OCRemix stuff with, and even that I can play Smash Bros. Melee after class (we always stay at least two times a week to play it for a few hours).

So no, people don't think I'm crazy for loving videogame music. My friends love it too, and my sister really likes it and she always talks about how some tracks from "Super Hang On" stood with her forever. My dad loves when I introduce him to knew music, being it from a game or not. He even does "best of" cds, like one where he put various tracks from Wangan Midnight Maximum. Just a few relatives comment something like "oh, that videogame music thing again", but they don't find it weird, 'cause that's me since I was little, and even then they are always asking me advice about what or where they should buy their games from.

And I relate with almost all the posts in this thread in some way, that's why I decided to do such a long post. Sorry if it turned out boring :)

Personal favorites OSTs at the moment: Donkey Kong Country 2 and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.

I'm the only person i know where i live (6 months ago it would have been 2, but the guy i knew at work who shared this interest moved :( ) that listents to vgm or anime music. Well, not entirely true, as my bro likes anime music, just not vgm. I seem to have an appreciation for all types/genres of music (except rap, hip hop, pop, which i can't stand). I see it the same way i see orchestrated pieces in movies: without them, to me anyway, the movie/game wouldn't be half of what it is with it. But yes, my friends actually do use the word crazy when referring to my love for video game music. But then again, half of them listen to mostly rap anyway, so maybe there's a correlation there, idk. But hey, to each his own. I just wish people would bash others because they like game music. My iPod isn't full of vgm, but I think it might be difficult to fill an 80GB iPod with it, lol.

I've been working on reintroducing some people to game music and draw in people I know who have a small interest in it. Seems to be working so far. Here soon I will be burning another DVD (two actually) of VG music for a friend at work. I've had some discussions with him before and he's and appreciator of music despite it's orgin. I was able to open up to him about some japanese music I liked after he told me he listed to some stuff with foreign lyrics. Anyway, he'll enjoy the stuff I know for sure.

Impressive that this thread has gone on for almost a whole year (counting all of the month's considering it started in the sixth of last year)

I'd have to say I'v had my run ins with people that do and don't. When I first played DK1 and 2 I liked the music so much I recorded it to audio cassette so I could listen to it whenever I wanted. And I got some rather amusing looks from others if they heard it through my headphones.

I'll simply say yes I have had people think I am wierd and others that were there on the same 'shelf'. If you care to read about just how much of an oddball I am about it then read on.

As I grew up I made a friend and we'd alternate sleeping at eachothers houses. Usually on the cases both of us weren't up, one of us was. I remember one particular night we were playing Sonic Adventure 2, Pyramid Cave (over and over from dusk to dawn, mostly ring collecting and trying to get an A but overall I just LOVE the music from that level.)

Another case of my obsession would be later on when it came to that joyous time in junior high where your class mates quiz you about the music you listen to. Rock, sometimes whatever is on but mostly video game. I got some funny looks but told em it makes me happy, thats all that I need.

I have this bad habbit of pausing some or just utterly stopping all movement in some games (like SSBM, Sonic series, Metroid series, Mario series..yep, even the old 8-bit old school.) I'v made a habbit of listening to video game music for hours on end through most of my life, usually without lyrics but sometimes they make it in. (Can't deny I really like Crush 40's Sonic music themes)

And I have 12.77 (maybe 13 if you count Crysis) gigs of MP3's ranging from nintendo to modern consoles (and some computer game), and am still adding plenty more to it.

All in all I would have to say VG music has been a prominent factor in my life that has actually helped me in many ways, and in all honesty I don't care what others think, as long as the music makes its listener happy then that is all that matters.

(Sorry for large post, figured the first should maybe be a bit meaningful -.o; )

I've loved vgms since I was able to record them from some of my favorite NES games. Starting with Megaman and on, it's what I've been listening to to relax and remember the fun times I've had with them. Having the vgms of older games keep them fresh in my mind and of those I've never played. With all those submissions that everyone's uploading has really helped me and others get a broader spectrum of all the different genres and systems used.
My favorite osts have to be God Hand and Thrill Kill which are the most prolific to me.
I don't mention to anyone what I listen to, just stating they're soundtracks. I was listening to Parappa the Rapper in my car one day and I just laughed off people's weird looks. So don't let it faze you. Just do what you like.

The game that made me realize how great Video Game Music is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Although I only played it just last year, right after I played Phantom Hourglass, man I really changed my views on this. The moment I entered the Lost Woods, I was totally amazed on Sarias Song. From that moment on, I began listening to a lot of different videogame music. As to what other people thinks about it, I am the one avoiding it myself. See, I only have an Ipod Shuffle(the first model) whenever people ask me what are the music in it, I quickly reply "Uhm, there is no music on it, Im just using it as a flash drive". I just dont want to see their reaction because here in my country they are all into mainstream music. I might get bashed if they hear me listening to this kind of music. Although I have a couple of friends who like videogame music, they dont listen to the game osts I listen, but I'm still thankful that they like it :)

When I was younger, I use to have this gigantic tape recorded (they were big back then) and I would record music from my NES and my SuperNES. I loved the main jungle theme from the original game Metal Gear. And also the music from when you would get chased.

But it did seem like people would think I was strange because I liked video game music. At least back then in the late 80's early 90's. Now EVERYONE can here the original Mario Bros music from the NES and know exactly where it is from.

So I think people thinking that it is strange has died down some. It seems like girls still don't understand. (Some of them) So then it makes it seem like I am some video game geek.

Oh well, the music is awesome in video games a lot of the times and it's good to know other people out there can enjoy it and appreciate it the same way I do.

Game music started my interest in music in general. Before, I never liked the "popular msuic" of today, and unluckily, music on the radio and MTV was the only thing I got to hear. So I didn't really care about music and thought it was shit, and I never liked the singing. Until I played Medievil and FF6...
I don't talk with my friends about the music I like, because I know they would give me strange looks.
Now I have collected a good amount of not only VGM, but also some other music such as classical and postrock (you should try this genre, there are all awesome epic rock/orchestra pieces without singing). Now I even can enjoy some pieces with singing in it.

Yeah, it's sad that people turn away as soon as they hear that the music they found quite nice before is from a videogame. That's because even so-called "open-minded" people are in reality very narrow-minded. I assume 70% of the "music-fans" are in fact just jumping one bandwagon after another. They don't really care about the melodies, they just want...well, I don't know what they want.

lol i had to post again after reading some posts, I agree with alot of people here, i listen to my ipod at work which only has anime and video game music on it, so when ever somebody asks what im listening to, i tell them nothing, and then some people ask to borrow it and im like no, you wouldnt like the music, and they're like "Dont worry i like all music, so i dont care..." and then i get all defense trying not to listen so i won't look like a nerd or something. I know its bad caring what other people think, but its hard when listening to this kind of music is so unorthodox. but reading a lot of these posts has opened my eyes a little. A lot more people listen to this than i originally thought, but i wish i knew more in person.

I have always, and I mean ALWAYS, hard a certain love for video game music. I know most people never think that it is not real music, but I ask why not? Don't these people put effort into their work as well? It's like saying anime is not art.

all my friends think im crazy because i have a 4MB MP3 player and i have about 5 songs on it that aren't from a video game.

for me, music is one of the most important parts of a game.
i remember games much better if the music is catchy. God, i've not played Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles in years, but i still remember the music.

music is music. it takes just as much effort, if not more, to compose music for a film or a game than to write a song. or in many cases, pay a writer to do it and pretend you wrote it
they also have the challenge of keeping it in context, and they have to work with the limited (but improving) restrictions which games consoles, particularly handhelds have. Although that isn't much of an issue anymore.

I love when you are in the car jamming to some awesome game music, and your buddy doesn't realize it's game music. Then when he inquires about the music, you tell him it's from a game. It's a great way to open people's eyes to game music.

I don't really care if anyone knows I love game music. However, if I feel like a song sounds silly and embarrassing I'll skip the track to the next. I couldn't tell ya why I find some tracks embarrassing, I just do. Like uhm... The Dragon Quest tracks in concert, when the girls sing... Japanese language sounds cool and funny at the same time.

I used to lie, when i was 15 or so, I'd say something like classic rock when asked what I was listening to/liked (I do like some of it, but my first answer would be VG music). But now I just tell people. I haven't gotten too many bad reactions, some people liked it, some didn't care. a couple of people thought it was nerdy, but I just said "music is music, we can't help what we like or don't".

I do like to throw people off though, asked what I'm listening to? I usually give the track name, which can sometimes lead to them getting confused, or even "I think I've heard that one", you've heard 'Sanity's Requiem' huh? I didn't know you were into videogame music too! :P

I don't think people who likes video games music is crazy... the people who likes the music from those bands you all listen to are crazy...

To me, I prefer VG music than the music we listen to today. VG music has more sense and better sounds than the trash people listen to today.

Right now I ONLY listen to VG music and yeah people give me looks but I don't give a snot to what people think about me. I'm not the only one who agrees that music today really sucks and prefer the now known as the "oldies" and VG music than the music today.

I find it ironic and kinda funny at the same time... we get made fun of, laughed at, eyes rolled at us, etc, but the video game music industry is growing fantastically at exponential rate.

More and more gamers are demanding that the music behind the game not only match, but in many cases, exceed the game itself. But the best part is that these video game companies are answering the call.

I've finally converted my last roommate to VG sound track music and now he can't get enough of it. During my lunch break today I handed off a compilation of my favorite videogame, anime and (just a few) movie soundtrack pieces to my parents. Earlier this week I was showing them some of my favorite pieces and they demanded that I make them a compilation... and my parents HATE video games with a passion.

All I can say is, I'm very happy that there are others like me (especially among these forums) who truly understand the incredible magic found in this music. Who understand that it's more than just repetitive head-bobbing, seat-thumping, bumping and grinding. All music has it's place to be sure, but that stuff can never dream of stirring emotions and evoking such in-depth imagery like video game/anime/movie soundtracks can. Those stirring emotions and in-depth imagery also applies to things like Sonic or Mario Brothers soundtracks. I mean, if you played those as a kid, and listen to the soundtracks now... who isn't taken back 15-20 years to those chilled Saturdays spent trying to get past a lvl in Mario 3 or working out the right strategy in FF2 or something. It's simply... AWESOME!

Wow in only 2 days I read all 14 pages xD I too listen to VGM. I think that it is normal to listen to normal music. The mainstream music is actually not "real" music cause music has no lyrics. The mainstream "music" consists of songs. Songs and music are 2 different things. The song is only telling you about the feeling or emotions of a singer but the VGM has no real message. Listening to the same music can create different feelings and emotions. And as for Anime songs it is that i just cant understand what they sing and lyrics play no role for me in the song, lyrics\voice become a part of the music or a melody. Thats making the Anime music also as interesting as VGM.

It's great to know that there are others like me that really enjoy video game music. What 's funny to me is how it has completely taken over the music I used to listen to, I actually deleted all of the commercial on my drive to make room for more video game/anime music. lol.

It's true what you say Aurora, I don't have a single friend/relative/acquaintance that listens to video game music, many of them refuse or even scoff at the idea of doing so. Well actually there is one. I got my Mom interested in game music now, she has at least 3 or 4 full albums on her Mp3 player and she's still requesting more. lol.

I think that we are more open for something new like VGM\Anime music because it is interesting for us and many other people dont' want it, they dont want to accept VGM as a part of "real" music and thats why they want to keep themselves away from it by mocking at people who do listen to VGM and Anime music, because they are afraid that if they will like VGM they will lose their friends and they will become lonely. And after I found this forum I wasn't lonely anymore. xD

My brother sort of doubles as my best friend and he's the one that got me into VG music. We are in two different bands together. One will be devoted to VG music from our favorite games, the other is kinda metal based but really weird and does a Mario song and currently working on a Sonic 2 medley.

Eventually I think that "game music" will become a genre all by itself(it already is in my media player) along with VG music cover bands. With more composers in the bands as Nobuo Uematsu has done with The Black Mages.

Most people don't get it. My wife finds most game music makes her jittery. Too hectic for her tastes... which strikes me as odd, given how much metal she likes.

"Real" (as in, not licensed commercial stuff) game music is something of an acquired taste. And if you've never played the game associated with it, then it's admittedly harder to get into.

Im not open to tell anyone i listen to anime/video game music beacuse i already know how they'll respond. Some of them find it "lame" because it uses classical instruments most of the time and compare it to classical music like Mozart and Beethoven. I don't know how they can see a connection between them two. The only ones that know im listening to VG music are my family and my bestfriends.

Before I couldn't even imaging listening to something using classical instruments. Today I dont listen to anything than VG/anime music all my old music is gone. No more Hip-hop, Hardcore bands, alternative or anything like that.

What makes VG/anime music so great to me is that it doesn't have any limitations. There isn't rules how vg music should sound. The composers are free to do whatever they see fitting. They can blend any intrsuments they want, whatever sound they want. But the thing i find most amazing of all is that when it's used to capture the feeling of a scene. You listen to the music and imagine the scene from the game or just make up your own scene you see fitting. It just gives me shivers like no other music can do. It has become like a drug. I constantly search for that feeling now days.

I've had my fair share of mockings, but I've noticed the line is fading. This is probably due to gaming becoming more culturally accepted as a whole.

I definitely see how some people can't appreciate most game music as much as someone who's played the game, however, given they won't receive the same nostalgic feelings, and it won't have as much meaning to them.

On the other hand, if the music you really enjoy could be easily found in the nearest store, would you enjoy it as much? Because everyone wants to be unique; people like us put a certain pride in not touching anything that is even close to mainstream.

I agree whole-heartedly, some of the best music is that which has to be sought out, and if my collection is anything to go by, I have gone to some exhaustible lengths to locate some music which although doesn't have much of a duration, is still quite marvelous.

One example of this is the piece of music taken from the final level of Final Doom: Evilution reached in regulation play.
The level is called Last Call and it is a real suspenseful track, full of emotion, yet it only lasts 1:07.

I'm pretty new here, but have been a fan of video game music for a long while. Since games started becoming CD based, and storage space isn't really an issue, soundtracks have been getting better, and more sophisticated. My roommate, who used to be in a band (lead singer), hates it. Stating that video game music isn't real music..I suppose because it's not 80's music, or has a studio label attached to it. I remember Star Control II on the PC..I had a Gravis Ultrasound..and man..that game was awesome, not to mention I gew up in the era of PC/Amiga graphic demos. Since then I've always appreciated the effort that artists and devs put into game music. About 90% of my ipod is video game music..and yeah..he thinks I'm nuts..but who cares..I like what I like...and it sounds good damnit. Just my 2 cents worth :)

The more I listen to video game music the more I love it. I still receive criticism from time to time but that really doesn't matter, the only thing that's important is that I like it, nuff said.

This whole thing that some people say: "it's not real music!" is just plain stupid. Don't these artists take their work just as seriously, putting time, effort and heart into every one of their songs? Sounds like a real artist writing real music to me.

If the artists take their work so seriously why then should their listeners be treated differently, like some group of nerds obsessed with their games and game related material? 'Blah blah blah' says the sack of fail that's closed-minded. "sack of fail".

Anywho, don't let these people get under your skin. Turn up your game music, that should drown them out. :)
Oh and this all applies to Anime music as well.

Whoo~! Glad I found this thread! I hear all of you and I feel the same way mostly. I'm from Singapore by the way (no, not a part of China! Go and learn some geography!) and I think people here are not so different. I get some weird responses when people find out about what kind of music I listen to, and people aren't any more receptive towards VGM and anime music here either. But we do have a core base of VGM lovers and fans. Heck, we just hosted "PLAY!" The Video Game Orchestra like a while back. Plus, it seems that my government is trying to develop even closer ties with Japan, and results are already showing. We have like some games partly developed here, and even anime movies in cinemas. I'd expect to see more of it soon!

And for those of you with the fear of letting people know you're into VGM, heck about them and just enjoy what music you like!

I dunno... I get different reactions from different people. One of my roommates is a big fan of video game music. Heck, he listens to video game music more than me, but more of the upbeat kind like TimeSplitters/Street Fighter, whereas I'm into the peaceful kind like Chrono Cross, but we have our similar tastes like the Mario and Final Fantasy games.

In any case, being in college the last 3 years of my life, I have gotten the question: "So... What music do you listen to?" many times. My answer is almost always along the lines of: "I listen to all types of music, but I'm more into music from video games." I've gotten some reactions like: "Well... that's different," and I've even gotten someone saying: "At least you're honest about it," as if it's something most people would hide. I've also gotten a "Wow, that's awesome!" response from someone when I mentioned that I have the entire Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack.

So it's kind of a mixed bag. I have never been disrespected because of my taste, though my sister thinks I'm a weirdo for downloading a song like "Ride on Shooting Star" from the FLCL OST. And my parents have even said that my "Nintendo music" is nice to listen to, since I've played a few on the piano, most recently the Gusty Garden Galaxy theme from Mario Galaxy. Also, my girlfriend HATES it when I listen to my video game music in the car, not because she hates VGM (she actually listens to remixes of the Ragnarok Online OST all the time), but because I listen to "sleepy" music.

So there you go... I don't know if people think I'm crazy for loving game music so much (I'm sure there are a few many out there), but it seems the people I hang around with tend to like video game music also... They just don't have 8 gigs of VGM on their computer like me, save for my roommate who probably has more.

I love game music, its all I listen too. My favorite thing to do is go on long walks to different places and listen to the appropriate game music for that location (forest music for walking in the woods ect).

People do think its weird to listen to game music with no lyrics but they should ask themselves what would they rather listen to? Just the melody of their favorite song? Or just the lyrics? Personally…I find it annoying having someone sing in my ear about their problems that I really could care less about.

Yeah, I used to be laughed at in college for carrying my huge CD case full of game musicks everywhere to listen to on my CD player. I still have a passion for it even today, as that is the majority of what I listen to (and create) is musick to express the mood of certain scenarios in various games. Musick is a very important part of gaming for me, actually...I know alot of guys who turn off the volume and listen to the radio or mp3 while playing games, but I feel to thoroughly enjoy a game, you must also absorb it in entirety, including the musicks.

I usually blast the weirdest songs I have on my MP3 player. I go into a silent store with some Katamari Damacy songs on then it quickly transitions into that Ass-N-Titties song that alienates practically a crapload of people.

I can't wait to get a bad ass sound system in my car so I can blast some Rick Astley and Motoi Sakuraba down the road. I'll Rick Roll everyone down the street while listening in to some Progressive Rock and maybe a little of Masashi Hamauzu.

Interesting side note that I found out that Hamauzu was born on my birthday.
Now I have a reason to mess with him when I go meet him in Japan for the summer.

I been a gaming music fan for the longest time. However the only VGM I truly is enjoy is old school (up until the previous era in gaming). My taste in music in the VGM world differs from everyone else. People like Symphonic, lyrical, beautiful master pieces from titles like Final Fantasy,Tales of Symphonia or other wondrous RPG's. This is not true for me.

My Vgm tastes are Really strong melodies that I can feel. One game I can point out is "Elemental Master" for the Sega Genesis every time Stage 4 (Blood Stained Lake) this huge RUSH takes over me and feel ready to take on the world!..... well not really but I do get a excellent feeling. Raiden II also has melodies that give me the "ok, let's do it" confidence when playing a hard title such as Raiden II is.

My point is I like Old Style VGM. I don't like anything in todays music gaming world except "Dragon Blade:wrath of fire" on the wii. The melody of the "Boss fights" is so strong,it's a moving piece of music. Those awesome Chips tunes are missed terribly. Today's music in gaming doesn't really cut the bill.

Let the truth be told that I prefer VGM over Mainstream radio garbage. Zelda II > Fifty Cent, Gradius III > Nickelback, Lords of thunder > Dragonforce......(I know DF isn't main stream) You get my point. Thank you.

Some of my friends are put off listening to my mp3 player because of the amount of soundtracks i have on there!

while i do listen to my ordinary tastes (Metal/Rock/Symphonic Metal) in my opinion nothing beats the amazing Advent Rising OST or Final Fantasy VII's memorable score.

I think alot of people (especially parents) have trouble accepting that video game music has moved on from the space invaders beeps and bops of old.
But its nothing like that!! vg music rivals even the most complete hollywood/movie soundtracks anyday!

In your face stubborn fools! Vg music is the FUTURE!!!

well so i think anyway ^^'

ok when i was in high school i was almost promoting anime music. people would ask how do you know what they're saying ? i would anwser i have my sources and almost everybody would leave me alone

but with video games i would say depends on what game the music from. ex: sonic music= kids music
zelda music= at least you listen to real video game music
mainstream game music = you'd be better off listening to (insert mainstream genre of music)

anime game music= you actually listen to that ?

I don't particularly care what people think when I listen to my music. No matter what it is, if I like it, I'll play it. That includes any other music I have, not just videogame music.

Although, it does help a little that a friend of mine is really big on movie soundtracks. So, sometimes we just help each other to OSTs on each other's computers. :D

All my friends were laughing, in a good way, when I put on Random's "MegaRan" though. I know it's not strictly instrumental, but they all thought it was hilarious that it was an album centered around Megaman.

I don't have any of my VG Music on my Creative Zen (they're used as ringtones on my Motorola W490, though :)) so the subject hasn't come up often. (actually, I think the only time it ever has come up, ever was in 6th grade)
I do talk about my favorite game music with my friends, though.

I would imagine getting some pretty weird looks from people if it did come up. Hell, I get weird looks whenever I utter the phrase "Progressive Thrash Metal."

What pisses me off is when people discriminate towards me because I listen to "bad music." I was listening to Edge of Sanity (great Death Metal band, check them out) and I guess the dude next to me heard it coming out of the shitty headphones we're given in the Computer Lab 'cause he asked if he could hear some of it. I of course give the headphones to him, turn the volume up and asked if he could hear it well. He listens to about 10 seconds of it, puts the headphones down and starts preaching towards me. "You're listening to Satan!" Not Satanist music, not "Satin Music", no, this music is SSSSSOOOOOOOO bad, I must be listening to Satan himself! "Boy! You need Jesus!" I wanted to rip that twig boy in half. Apparently, it's okay to listen to Retards Attempting Poetry (rap, if you've never heard that joke) about bustin' caps in peoples' asses and screwin' bitches (I've actually heard him play his music through the speakers, I'm not stereotyping), but someone singing about sanity issues in a low growl is evil.

Yeah, I'd assume that I'd encounter a situation like that only about me "not havin' a life" if VG Music were to come up.

I personally love video game music (and movie soundtracks too... but more like the scores from them unless it's a musical). I actually introduced my mom to some VGM like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy and she loves a few of the songs. In my opinion, instrumental music (whether it be from video games or movies or just in general) conveys so much more than lyrical, mainstream, straightforward music can. Sure, there are a few exceptions here and there on the radio; but what we need right now is less rap talking about sex and drugs and all that stuff, less boy-bands or TV stars deciding they're gonna make a singing career and all they talk about is relationships tween 'issues', and MUCH MUCH more of the music we're talking about on this forum that can appeal and speak to anyone, male or female of any race and of any age, as soon as the soundwaves hit their ears.

I can't see what anyone would have against video game music. It is not any different from other types of music like rap, metal, classical, jazz, etc. (all of which appear in one video game or another). People just happen to believe that music scores from games are "uncool" or somehow indicate a weakness in ones social status. It's so sad really...

Yea pretty much. When you ask someone in the forums whats your fav genre of music it'll either be hiphop, r&b, rap, metal or rock. The answer VGM is virtually non-existant. Even IRL i couldn't even find someone who favors VGM, and its really depressing. Most of my friends listens to pop songs and when u link them VGM they'll think ur crazy.

When people compare VGM to movie and trance/electronica music, they'll say its like comparing an ant to a giant.

Personally i like trance music, but it gets boring after awhile...I suppose most people don't get tired of dancing to the beat eh? I've been listening to VGM since when i was young and feel that its the only genre of music that could possibly express ones feelings.

In the end stereotypes will consider VGM not a 'real' music(bad music). It's really sad but i don't see this mindset being changed anytime in the future because games are afterall, catered to a certain age group. You can argue that ur 40, still playing games, and love VGM. But then you can consider yourself one out of a million people in ur age group that listens to VGM.

I actually feel kinda lonely when people are talking about 'ohhh the latest pop songs' while i'm all alone listening to my own VGM lol. I guess its not really a bad thing after all since i feel unique haha.

I have the fortune (or misfortune, whichever you believe) of liking basically all forms of music, regardless of genre; that is, if I enjoy the tune. I get weird looks from people all the time when I switch from one genre to another (classical to 60s rock and roll, for instance) and even stranger ones when I switch from contemporary to video game music. Who cares about the genre? IT'S MUSIC.

indeed, what you said is really true (at least for me & my brother also) ,
that VGM has its own 'feelings' that no other genre of music can ever capture that same 'feel' .. it's just an unique style/genre, and thanks god for VGM, because many of my best-est favorite beautiful touching music comes from VGM, not from any other more 'popular' genres out there.

Honestly...I'll listen to game music while cruising in my car.....

You got to play some "Cruisin' World" musics while you're driving! Heck, how about "Born To Be Wild", it was actually featured for the game in a commercial... Good times...

Back on topic... I feel like I died and gone to heaven and found out that there's a world like this and at the same time found out that God, the Mighty Man Himself is into VG music too! And yes, I too had been ridiculed by classmates when I used to go to a primary school with a walk-man playing Mario (8-bit), Sonic (16-bit), Pokemon (8-Bit) TMNT: The Arcade Game (8-bit) that I recorded, I used to get pissed! But nowadays, grown up in my twenties, not made fun of, but still find myself getting the look from others saying that I'm into VG music, or even say artist like Koji Kondo, Hip Tanaka, Jun Senoue to name a few. I don't get angry anymore, but feel very sad that they don't know what they are missing.

I also listen to mainstream music (mostly all), movie and TV scores, but VG music almost always dominates in my ears. Back then I always wondered if there was a music that has a mix of orchestra and rock together, just 'cause I'm fond of Classical and Rock genre, than I heard Battle Themes from the Pokemon anime and it felt my praires were answered and I was like "Thank you, God!"

Heck, my mom just adore the Zelda music just because it was an amazing composition. Wich brings me to my point: "It doesn't matter the quality of the music and from "bleep bleep", "tin cans" to "real" instrument, it matters the quality of the compositon (arranged or not) of the music (and songs)."
And this count to every genre, and VG music also counts, either if it's real or not, as they(close-minded) say.

"I'd say we are not crazy geeks, nerds, dweeb, doofus(I consider that offensive, but not now), we are just crazy for music that brings back memories. And I would play an 8-Bit Super Mario Bros. on my mp3 player (If I had one) any day and thoroughly INJOY it!"

Music from video games has to be a big thing for me. Many friends of mine don't understand NOR do they even know the music. They don't game as much as me, but to me, game music means a lot. Starting from Mario, Secret of Mana, to all the way to Kingdom Hearts and many more. A lot of good music unheard from a lot of people that think it's not REAL music. Or it's NOT cool, because they think these modern music is the only cool thing to listen to. (I have my phone Ringtone as: FFVII: (Victory Fanfare)

I believe it all depends on what kind of vg music we're talking about.

Some modern vg soundtracks sound as if they belong to a movie, specially if they are orchestrated and not made in Japan, e.g., Dead Space, Halo 3 and Resistance Retribution, I'd say this kind could be listened to around people without taking the risk of being labeled as a crazy or freaky person, unless you're surrounded by completely uncultured people.

However I do believe other types of vg music are inappropriate and sometimes too obnoxious to be heard without headphones, such as those soundtracks from NES and GameBoy games. It would be pretty demented to pump up the volume while playing tracks such as "Black Night" from Akumajo Dracula Best, the battle music from the first Final Fantasy, and so on.

This is why i think western/american video game music has an advantage over the eastern stuff, its almost like a movie score and some people buy movie scores from the store. Also some of the more western vgm is not loaded with synths/pop or other unnatural sounds.

i am one of the lucky ones i guess. my firends are all into video game and soundtrack track music. like what some people here have said, we are the ones pondering over why people are listening to some certain mainstream music. if one of us gets a new OST that we think someone we know may like it too, we ask if they want it. other poeple just think it is weird of us to love video game music. one friend thinks it is weird how i even like anime, much less anime music that is in japanese that i don't understand. (that is a different story though) as long as it is not rap or country then i listen to anything. no person that i have heard had ever said: "oh that is interesting that you listen to video game music. what does it sound like?" it is like they all have a certain image of what video game music is, and they don't want anything to do with it. though everyone has what they like and don't like.

Yeah, I got people I work around that make fun of me occasionally when I show them what I'm listening to (it's usually VGM). They don't understand what I find good about it and all they're thinking of in terms of VGM is NES Super Mario. Even when I explain that there's more to VGM then just that, their eyes glaze over and they stop listening. I give up and keep listening.

To me, video game music is no different from normal orchestral music. It is pleasant to the ear and that is why we enjoy it. Well, that, and sometimes because they remind us of good gaming experiences. If some individuals are so close-minded as to look at us weird for liking game music, I think they're not even worth arguing with.

Well a friend of mine just says I am a huge nerd and laughs when I mention about listening to some video game music. His loss when it comes to some VG Metal soundtracks since he is a metal guy.

guilty gear, shin contra.....

your friend is a douche [no offence]. he doesn't get that people like trent reznor [nin] composed the soundtrack to quake. or that megadeth did the soundtrack to fzero 64 and a cover to duke nukem 3d.

I just wonder... is there a resource for anime music ? you know, the music that plays in the backround ?

you should really support www.streamingsoundtracks.com for the last several years many [including myself] have helped developed a nice playlist of movie, game and anime soundtracks.

Someone browsing my ipod came across beethoven once and started sniggering. I asked "whats your fucking problem?" and he answered "hey nothing wrong with it, it just makes you an intellectual". An "Intellectual", I liked the sound of it. I now answer any queries to my japanese, musical, video game or anime music tastes that I'm an intellectual. Damn right bitch.

LMAO!!!!

I listen to pretty much everything except for country and crap music cough pussycat dolls' but I love vgm. I started listening with a few pieces from final fantasy but it was metal gear solid 2 that really got me hooked.

Music has a language all of it's own which can speak to us in many different ways. Sometimes I prefer instrumentals because there are no words to interrupt the way I relate to the music.

On the other hand I like clever song writting and clever manipulation of words. In short we can all have the best of both worlds and music is music even if it happens to be on the soundtrack for a video game.

In some ways the quality of vgm music is better because the composer is taking such care to fit the music to the situation and mood of the game.

I'm looking for Aquanox OST absolutley cool THING what makes my brain hollow place and Scanners movie OST - very sickness music :D I see this OST'S no where must say THESE are of the coolest Original OST'S. I agree with you I've had a similar experience. But you know what you have to just be yourself. I seriously don't give a rats-ass what plp say bout me listenin to VGM, I mean even when I cut the lawn and take out weeds (legal) I always got my buds listening to Kingdom hearts or Toy Story (SNES). Pretty much the same here, and I absolutely do NOT agree with the terms of
labeling someone crazy just for liking VGmusic, I do myself. That other woman
must have something against it, but oh well for her *sarcastic expression*

Also, to my personal opinion, I'd strongly prefer IT over music which has
profanity and other 'third-rated' issue lyrics (disregard my mind, but there's
times for that and LOTS of times NOT for that thing. I for one don't prefer it
in what I listen to.) I care less of what music from the games are most of
the time, just no profanity or 'that other sort of thing' in them! Also I like the
instrumental songs at best, but some things with lyrics too, and seldom things
which aren't from games. 80% videogame songs, 20% other songs... that's
what you'll find me around listening to.

VGM is not really a genre unless you are talking about 8-16bit music from the golden era of VG.

Most of you are talking about modern day VGM which to me is no different than regular music.

They even use many mainstream bands/MC's to make the music, so to say you like VGM is too wide of a scope to what you actually like.

All most of you are really saying is you like classic/rock/rap music etc, but you like this track you heard on some game.

For example if you dont like rap music, then you're hardly going to like Madworlds OST are you?

If you dont like electronic music you're hardly going to like wipeouts OST, I could go on naming the usual normal genres of music like Rock etc.

So then do you actually like VGM? or just a certain type of mainstream genres, for most of you it seems like the latter.

To me only 8-16bit is real VGM music and likly when you tell someone you listen to VGM thats what they will think of.

Anime music is just J-pop music, so if your friends dont like j-pop well then it being anime music wont change their minds about it either.

But i had some VGM on my mom's MP3 which has a lot of mainstream crap on it, anyway it had FFVII and Little Big Planet and Bionic Commando Rearmed and my mom said to me "can you delete this stuff off of here" because when she walks the track at the nearby school she's listening to Celtic Thunder (ever heard of them?) and suddenly it switches to "Fighting" from ff7 and she's like holy shit what the fuck is this?! But I played some Mario Galaxy stuff and she liked it

Without music, where's the atmosphere, the hype or climatic ascent? Would Metal gear solid 4 or Final fantasy be anywhere near as amazing if they didn't have their music? Hell no, They'd fail like WoW fails on it's musical front, personally, i know i love VGM when i don't want to mute it and listen to something else. I've muted Midnight club stuff and burnout stuff and tony hawks things, simply because the music choice is aimed at the idea of what music younger generations listen too.
I think it's a damn good thing when a game chooses to get its own composer in, instead of paying royalties to bands ;P

For me, music is music, no matter what it was made for. I'd rather listen to something Falcom wrote than hear Lady gaga's Pokerface.

Funny story. I actually had a class where we talked about gender, violence and sex issues in video gaming. Our final project was either write our own video game or write an article for a our professor's website. I chose the article, and did a history of music and sound in video games. That was about the point I discovered VGM anyway, so it worked out. I had a blast researching it and writing it. Wish I still had a copy.

I agree with most of what's been said, but there is a lot of crappy VGM out there that soils opinions. However, there is so much that is enjoyable and fun to listen to. It's really arrogant of people to completely ignore a mountain of compositions just because they were video game soundtracks. That being said, there's also a whole lot more classical music out there that is really cool (Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, R. Strauss, Vaughan Williams, etc) that I would reccomend.

I get the same crap from people for listening to my classical music sometimes as I do for listening to my video game music. Weird, huh?

Everyone I know, with the exception of my kid brother, thinks I'm weird for listening to VG music. I always wonder why. I tell people that I mostly have soundtracks for films and games in my iPod, and they give me this look that says, "Really? What's the matter with you." One person I know tells me I don't listen to "real" music. As if one person can arbitrarily define what "real music is. Besides, why is it weird for us to like video game music? Is someone weird for liking country, or rap, or rock? I wouldn't think so, but it's weird to like game and movie scores. Double standard, FTW, I guess.

However, I'm always happy to meet someone who enjoys scores as much as I do. It's like meeting someone who admits being a "browncoat" or who knows what you mean when you say "Would you kindly..."

I have been listening to Videogame Music since im 7 years old, i used to connect my SNES to my Stereo, RGB Cables, Yellow one on TV, Red and White Cables into my Stereo. and Record music on some cheap Empty Tapes to listen on Walkman when i was going around lol

The Rips i did back then were pretty ghetto lol, but man, it was satisfying. i had Dancing Mad when FF6 was just released 1 year ago, when there was no internet, it was priceless.. lol

Nowdays, when people ask me what im hearing.. i usually lie, i say im listening to Linking Park, System of a Down, Korn or whatever.
The real problem is when people want to hear music from my ipod lol.. i usually tell them:

Me: Hey man wait a sec! *Searches normal music throught 20 GB of Videogame Soundtracks*
Me: *Selects Album* look man, this group is awesome, it's system of a down
My friend: Oh well.. i dont like it that much but anyway.

I live in mexico, and Everyone listens to Reggaeton, Mariachi, Banda Ballads.. it's retarded, the music is fkng dumb, man i hear to the lirics and they talk all about the same..

Q: Do people think you are crazy for loving video game music?

A: I don't really know, and I don't really care. If they do, they're stupid. There is some gold in videogames that more 'conventional' music cannot touch. Videogame music for me is often the coming together of techniques from film scores, pop and/or other genres. Not always but often enough this is evident. Viva la 16-bit era!

I think a perfect ice breaker into the world of VGM, is remix albums and lyrical tracks on gaming albums. Everyone likes the Super Mario Bros. soundtrack but, have they heard a heavy metal or techno version of the album? I have lots of friends that are into anime, almost all of them. So OSTs like Persona 3 and 4 don't come off as strange to them. Also, the Chrono Cross OST, with it's soothing as well as amazingly uplifting tracks is a great gateway into the VGM genre.

ppl seem to think that we're still in the 1980's to early 90's when games like Pac-Man and Galaga, with their bloops and bleeps, are still what gaming music amounts to.

Yeah I think that too, it's a very easy to hear soundtrack, also the Castlevania Music is an awesome way to enter into VGM music IMO. But I don't know I always payed attention to the VGM while I was playing, when I was younger I didn't know that they release Soundtracks of games as albums so I used to record the music on a Tape with the console connected to the stereo, Man that was fun xD.

I hate how there is more Game music than anything else on my MP3 player (I try to listen to everything but I just can't connect like most people do). But then again who needs words to a song? I love game music the most because it takes on different moods more than mainstream songs. They don't change meaning. They just take you back. Oh... I remember when I heard that song in 1999... Game music makes me want to just go in my collection and play the damn game or I'll start zoning out. It's easy for me for game music to put me in that Zone. I have something for every mood. EVERY MOOD AND SITUATION

If people say that music with no lyrics is not music then i think they should go and study Music then.
As "Music" was first started with something that with only "sound", then people started to mess with stuff and turns out something with people singing. (this is how I think)
A thought from John Cage "that any sound can be music" ^.^ (i love that)

I love playing some of the full orchestral arrangements for people and asking them to identify it. I played "Song of the People" from Actraiser (or something like that - the tune that plays on the overworld map when you're the little angel) for a friend and asked him to identify it.

When he heard it with a full orchestra, he thought it was Bach, and that it was classical. When I told him it was an arrangement from an SNES game, he had a newfound respect for it.

Many composers on the NES and SNES were very capable musicians with very limited tools. When people laugh at game music as being blips and bloops, I always play the full arrangements for them.

I tell them that when they make fun of NES/SNES music, that they are only hearing the instrument, not the music. It usually ends with me giving them some mp3s, so all is good. ;)

It seems that (at least to me) the reason some people give VGM listeners a weird look is that they are listening to music associated with video games. In the eyes of some people, that makes you a geek, nerd, or weirdo because it's hard to imagine but some people think that video games are a waste of time, so much so that some people may think you have no life. I have friends that are like that. They will ask what I am listening to and when I tell them a soundtrack, they call me a nerd.

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever read. *plays MGS3 OST*

Well, yes and no for non-gamers.... No, most people think I'm playing "classical music" if there's any orchestration to the ost. However, yes, if I play any old NES stuff. Many of my friends are gamers, so they like the music as well.

In my car I'll listen to RPG music like Xenogears and Chrono and FF. People sometimes give me crap for it, but so what?

Do people think I'm crazy for loving VGMs like I would love Vince Offer's nuts if I knew what he was on about?

Simple answer: No.

Detailed answer: No, but when it comes to what I have on iTunes, I only have myself to share it with. Nobody I know in real life can connect to what I listen. Everywhere I turn, I see people listening to mainstream music, which I don't give a hoot about.

My thoughts exactly. Some people have told me that my taste for music is weird, since I dislike mainstream music, but I don't care. I want music that enhances my life, not noise that destroys it.

Not crazy, but rather, they think I'm childish at work.

I mean, I'm 26, I see their point, but music is universal, and VGM is a great source of creative work for it.
