Umm Seifer killed Odin and Gilgamesh was like screw that so he took Odin sword and added it to his collection and said Seifer your gay and started to reach for his sword and forgot which one belonged to him so instead he picked random swords and killed people with it and said Ill help you Squall cuz Odin did and Odins my homie so Squall and Gilgamesh lived happily ever after.

That pretty much said it =D
Gilgamesh was teleported away from some other FF game and I forgot whitch part anyway, he might be saying the things because of his anger and such about the teleportation... o_O
I like nanaki's explanation better though

FINAL FANTASY FIVE SPOILERS!!!

.
.
.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

.
.
.

Gilgamesh is something you'd only understand if you played FFV. In FFV, the antagonist, X-Death, had a sidekick named Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh is a coward but at the end he has a change of heart and kamikazes himself to save your party. ("Gilgamesh" is actually the name of a guy from Sumerian/Mesopotamian legend who was afraid of death but eventually learns to accept it as inevitable).

Apparently, Gilgamesh didn't really die. He took "Excalipoor," a trick sword from FFV. (You equip it and it says you've got the best possible strength, but when you actually use it you only cause 1 point of damage). Somewhere along the line he acquired Excalibur and Masamune. (Masamune is, aside from being a katana from Japanese legend and a sword in many games, the name of Sephiroth's sword. Which makes me wonder if "Excalibur" is somehow a reference to FFVI, although there's no sword by that name in that game.)

Now, thanks to Seifer, he has also aquired Odin's sword. (which I cannot spell if my life depended on it). And his collection is complete.

odin is one of 4 legendary fighters
when the fighter dies their swords return to gelgamesh
like odin's and king arthurs (the exclaiber)

and when seifer kills odin he says somthing like thanks for my forth and then attacks seifer firstly for being too cocky, secondly to avenge odins death and thirdly because odin found squall and party worth to grant his powers so does gelgamesh

:notgood: Ok thankyou, so here's my next question. who are the 4 legendary fighters? and does king arthur (supposing that he is one) die in FFVII and is that how gilgamesh comes to get his sword?:notgood:

Gelgamesh

odin (the viking god of war)
King Arther (king of camelot)
im still try'in to find out more about the excalepor but so far i'v found that it belongs to gelgamesh (aka gilgamesh, an historical king of Uruk in Babylonia, i think is the only warrior that could be gelgamesh) so he must be one of the 4 fighters
and as for the Masamune is a japanese sword but i dont know any famous japanese warrior so that as far as my knowledge takes me

there is an excalibur in ffvi. you get it at the very end when you beat one of the statues if i'm not mistaken.

<font color=red face="comic sans ms">So...

Excalipoor was in FF5,
Excalibur was in FF6,
Masamune was in FF7 (Sephiroth's sword)
Zantetsuken was Odin's sword in FF8.

So if Gilgamesh first appeared in FF5, then again in FF8, he travelled across the dimensional rift (or whatever he called it). He already had the Excalipoor, Excalibur and Masamune (which were all swords in FF5, FF6 and FF7 respectively). Then he took the Zantetsuken after Odin was killed.

The idea that Gilgamesh attacks Seifer is that because Seifer was the one to give him the fourth sword (Zantetsuken), he wants to see if Seifer is a worthy opponent. The dialogue goes something like this..

"You've given me the fourth one..."
"Now dodge my sword!"

Something like that... :uh?:

So.. yeah. hope that made sense...

Cool, I forgot about FFVI's Excalibur. So then that's it, the best swords from FFV, VI, VII and VIII are Excalipoor, Excalibur, Masamune and... Odin's sword.
