Now before I get anyone dissing this show, I'd like to mention that this is not for discussion about the english dub of One Piece, which many of you have most likely seen. That is a disgrace to anime and is not worth discussing. This is for discussion of the japanese One Piece, which I *hope* some of you will have seen. A lot of people haven't because its kinda daunting to have to watch through about 290 episodes, but believe me its well worth it. The storyline is completely unique, the fight scenes are incredible and the voice acting is some of the best I've heard. It's also quite funny at points, but can be incredibly emotional as well. Its also rated as one of the most popular animes/mangas in Japan, ahead of Naruto, which is more popular on the internet. Feel free to discuss any element of the show you like/don't like, but try and keep spoilers to a minimum in case someone is not as far as you :D

Yes! I love the One Piece anime. The series IS definately unique, and the storyline is great. [ I agree, the dubbed version is the worst thing that happened to One Piece ].
I love to do lots of research on it and stuff. Learning about the characters, crews, places, etc. I want to know everything about the series. ^^

I have to agree the English dub sucks. It is very annoying and has make the one of the best anime series ever look stupid in front of America. I have, although, read the manga and watch some episodes of the anime in Japanese. I love the way Luffy is so sarcastic and I like Chopper and Robin a lot. Also, with the original we can get more of the story than we can't because all those stupid phrases we get in the dub. I am happy they have decided to leave series like Bleach and Naruto basically unchanged, so that we can get a better appreciation of the story and the interaction with the characters.

One peice is a good anime and i highly appreciate it, not as much as my brother though, but i prefer Naruto, which is rated higher in popularity than one peice in the shonen jump weekly release.
The manga is better than the anime, but the anime is good too. Though when the English version was proposed, I was like, YOU'RE INSANE!!! You can't translate such a manga with so much Japanese culture and pun in its language, into another language in a totally different culture! But they did it anyways, and I never watched the anime because it was bound to be terrible.
The only reason things like Final Fantasy can be translated well is because it's possible to completely change the meanings of some things which don't fit with American culture. It's sad that they would try to translate an anime series which is half-based on dialogue...but TV companies are stupid and greedy for money that way, and, well, I hate them.
I also ****ing hate them for what they did to Yu-Gi-Oh, but that's a separate subject. :P

Yeah I totally agree on the dubbing things. FUNimation are passable like what they did with FMA, but 4Kids deserve to be shut down for crimes to anime.

Well, I remember that the English Division of Squaresoft in Japan offered to translate Final Fantasy VII, because they thought the US division would not do as good in keeping the symbolisms of the game, and they scored on that One. We can get a much more appreciation of the story because the game is translated faithfully to English. The Spanish translation of FFVII was not as good as the English one. The first big mistake 4kids did was to change the openings and endings for that crappy song. Believe, Kokoro no Chizu, Memories, RUN!RUN!RUN!, Before Dawn, etc are some of my favorite anime songs, so I have a grudge against them for that.

Plus, they replaced all the background music, edited out a lot of blood, japanese cultural symbols, religious symbols and basically anything which suggested violence like guns. Here's a good example:
One bit in particular which annoyed me was when Cobra (the king of Alabasta) is nailed to a wall in the japanese one, but in the English one he has like metal straps over his arms. It's stupid because no-one would restrain someone like that. Grrrrr, just thinking about the english One Piece gets me mad. Thank God they've stopped.

I watched the Japanese one piece and found it to be one of the funniest things ever. I liked the characters, the voice acting and the story. However, it goes VERY slowly at points (I stopped watching during the Desert saga). I heard it got a lot better though, so I am thinking about getting back into it.

Yeah, I think it did get better, or things just changed. Now the last arc seems very suspenseful and stuff, ever since the CP9, Robin, etc.

Yea', I like it.
If I'm being honest, I went off it a bit with the whole CP9 thing. I found it boring, and pretty much a rip-off merchant's attempt at re-living the whole Dragonball era.
"OH, WOW, HIS POWER LEVEL IS A MILLION HORSEPOWER."
Or, some crap like that, I forget.
Started reading it again, recently, with the whole introduction of Luffy's Grandpa and so forth, plus, Franky becoming their Shipwright. Which I saw coming, about over a year ago, or whenever that last was I actually bothered with One Piece. I remember some morons thinking it would actually be Paulie, but, psh. Wow, how unlikely.
But, honestly. I like it again, now. I actually have the best part of the series on HK Bootlegs from EBay. The subs suck, but, eh, who cares.

One Piece is definitely awesome. Yeah, the CP9 stuff was a little weird, but he was also doing that compilation with Akira Toriyama at the time (Cross Epoch, I think it was). It's no secret that AT was the biggest influence on Oda as a manga artist - and it's pretty impressive that he's managed to create a longer lasting manga! DB was 42 volumes, One Piece is at 45 and still going strong.
4Kids made a huge mistake when they picked up the license for One Piece. Sure, they were trying to cash in on Shonen Jump's US debut, and SJ/VIZ's introduction of good shonen manga into the US market, but their horrific chop job on One Piece drove people AWAY from the marketing, not towards it. Same thing happened with Shaman King, though. Killer manga, kick ass anime, HORRIBLE ENGLISH DUB!
Gotta give them credit for one thing, though - they're the only company I've ever seen that's managed to change the entire storyline of an episode just by changing the dialog. Seriously, that takes dedication!

I'm all about the manga, the anime was kind of cool for a while and then I watched it on US tv via 4Shame... and yeah, I think my eyes melted out of my skull and my ears burned with acid long before the intro song was even over.

I can tell ya now I agree with the whole 4kids raped the living heck out of One Piece. In fact, it sucks because I've been a follower for some time, and it's really hard to get ahold of DVD's if at all of One Piece, and I was hoping at least when it came out in the US to DVD, they'd unsensor it. Boy was I wrong.
Anyway, I've loved one piece for a couple years now, it's definitely ranked up there as one of my top animes. I love the feeling of "Nakama" (friendship, companionship, etc..etc...) that they are so big on. It hits home, and it's an action series to boot. I love Oda's art style, and the humor that runs throughout the whole thing. It does a nice balance of humor and serious situations, which just makes me love it even more.
I'm actually studying abroad in japan right now, and I've actually gotten the chance to sit down and read the real manga, and watch the episodes on tv, so it's only renewed my love for the series. Aside from the CP9 arc, it's been kinda nice having a series that doesnt push too much into filler all the time. And the manga has never ceased to keep me interested. Especially now^^

That whole chunk from the time they arrived at Enies Lobby until they arrive back safely was amazingly done! I look forward each week when the new raws come in from Japan (same with the anime)...

Sorry to bring up a somewhat older thread, but I just had to
To me, I don't think One Piece gets the exposure over here that it deserves. Everyone I know that's into anime (fansubs or otherwise) all only seem to be interested in Naruto or Bleach (which are good series in their own right, but I think the storytelling is much better in One Piece)
The 4kids dub wasn't bad. Now don't kill me yet. What I mean is that a lot of the voices were good. Of course they can never compare to when you hear them in Japanese first, but when I compared the two it seemed they had gotten some pretty close matches vocal-wise
Of course cutting out, editing, and all that other crap they did really sucked. But I heard that they're dropping One Piece somewhere. So there might yet be hope for them to drop the license (or for it to expire) and another more popular group (like Viz) picking it up and doing One Piece right

The 4Kids voice acting was horrible! Sanji (who is supposed to be a high class French cook) sounds like he's a homeless guy from New York, Nico Robin sounds like a bad country music singer... I could go on, but I refuse to watch those horrible dubs again just to refresh the memories I've tried to wipe away.

I'm not saying there weren't bad choices. To be honest I didn't like Sanji's voice and I never got to hearing Nico Robins. I just mean there were voices that worked among the ones that didn't. The rest of the straw hat crew sounded about right. I believe they got them to as close to as they were going to find anyway.
Well at least Funimation has the rights to One Piece and will be redubbing it. I imagine people are still going to complain, but at least there will be uncut DVDs offered now

I still think they all kinda sound crap. But I have pretty high standards for english dubs, more so if I watch the Japanese first (like with One Piece).
And, THANK YOU for letting me know about Funimation getting the rights. I know they've been trying for a couple years now. I am totally buying One Piece Box Sets (provided they're in Japanese with English subs). With any luck, they'll pick up some of the subbing tricks from K-F and make it a fully enjoyable experience.

Heh. Thing is, that's 100% correct.
But really, what can you expect? It IS 4Kids. Nothing they did ever turned out well.
I hated one piece because i'd only seen the english dub, then all of a sudden *GASP!* my brother decides to download jap one piece, claiming the english dub cut out a massive part of the story. I didn't look to keenly on this, as i could be using my quota to download D-Gray man instead. He got the first 10 episodes and i went *gasp*, one piece doesn't actually suck! 4Kids just butchered it till it had no coolness left! Now, One Piece is one of my favorite animes heh. It's very different, and for that i like it, i'm sick of the same anime with different characters. Of course, it can't beat D-Gray man, even though that's what i just described, i took to it much easier than i did all the other animes.
But of course, this is about one piece.
Yay! One Piece! Corny and kinda lame at times, but oh so funny and cool.

Same here, I stopped watching it at the same point, and haven't bothered watching it since. I actually didn't think that the English dub was all that bad (sorry), though I did see One Piece in that form first before I started watching the Jap version (better). I was enjoying it up to the desert bit, then it got boring. Maybe I'll keep watching, I'll think about it.
I moved on to Bleach and FMA (impressive English dub, which is the version I watched) when I finished with One Piece, and haven't looked back :)

The desert bit in One Piece does seem to drag a bit, but the Skypiea arc is a lot of fun. I could do without the Davy Back Fight arc in the anime, mainly because they deviated quite a bit from the manga at that point, but I know it'll pick back up again with the Water 7 and Enies Lobby stuff. The English dub was not horrible early on, but it just got worse. By the time they stopped dubbing it, they had ravaged the story and the characters beyond recognition... Really, it was bad...

Well I'll have to agree with most of you. The 4kids version of One Piece is a total butchery of the original Japanese version. But you gotta remember Its 4kids. I don't think they have ever tried to be faithful to any anime they have dubbed.

Last I heard, 4Kids is no longer dubbing One Piece, while I thought the voices were pretty decent, I would have preferred they stuck more to the original story instead of disembowling it. If someone decides to finish OP, I'd say they'd have to start all over to repair the damages those misbigotten fools made.
Sometimes it drags on, but other times it's funny, I'm surprised they kept the bits of Luffy and Chopper running from that old doctor (end of Drum Island arc) just 'cause they called her old. Normally bits that involve chase scenes remiscent of the old Tom and Jerry cartoons don't see the light of day.

One Piece = Love.
In Germany One Piece started some years ago when I was still in school. I didn't get the chance to watch it often because the time it was broadcasted didn't mix well with my schedule. But what I could see I loved. It was so hilariously funny.
Two months back a friend of mine brought my attention back to it. At that time - after repeating One Piece a few times - our channel stopped showing it somewhere in the middle of Water 7. A pity, really, because the German dub wasn't half bad - nothing compared to the original though.
So we took to downloading Fansubs and damn what a good decision. I never thought the original could be that good. (And we come to the conclusion that even the german version was censored, as far as I've checked they even let out hole episodes - whyever they did that...the episodes were rather harmless it being in Arlong Park and all...)
Somewhere along the way I stumbled over the 4kids version...WTF? The first time I heard Sanjis voice I wanted to f***ing cry. He's sounding like some drunk and stoned rapper...ew. I mean Zoro didn't sound too bad. His voice was rather deep which suits him just fine...but Sanji? *weeps* The only thing I saw of Robin-san were her covered breasts...damn that woman is so hot how could they f*** up her outfit that bad...? That's not even intend that's total idiocy.

I will never watch this show, ever. Simply because of its ridiculous length. That's a pretty bold statement, but understandable. However, it's got a LOT less filler than some extended animes *cough*Naruto*cough*, and it really is a great show... Either way, the manga is worth reading as well - go for scanslated. Takes a lot less time to read it, and there's no filler. If you download it and check it out, you should be able to read the whole series in a couple sessions. Read the first couple volumes, and if you don't like it, don't bother with the rest of it - it's very similar but more of the same type of humor. It gets pretty serious later on, once they're on the Grand Line, but for the most part it's light hearted.
I've only watched up through episode 219, but enjoyed every minute of it.

I never watched the english dub until i watched all of the anime(At least all that was out at the time). The Anime is actually really really good once you get past the art. I suggest just watching about 20-30 episodes to get into it. I did that and after about 50 I just could stop. I would watch 10 or more episodes at a time and have more torrents downloading the rest. For a while I was juggling between downloading, watching and burning backup DVDs.(My laptop can't handle all of it)
After I saw the english version i stopped once I heard, "Gum Gum Pistol"... It's the equivalent of "Shinigami" and "The Great Destroyer" in GW and "-tebayo" and "Believe it!" in Naruto imo.

One Piece is pretty good, my best friend always tried to get me into into it but i never could, i am a Naruto man myselfI had some issues with how they did the anime of Naruto. I loved the manga because it was so incredibly dark - there was something inherently creepy about a lot of the characters. The anime made it a lot more... cheerful? It was like the manga was all "The characters are going to die, consumed by the immensity of the demons inside of them!", and the anime seemed more "The characters are the greatest, and will defeat anything in their path!".
Plus, who really wants to watch 85 episodes of filler IN A ROW????!?!?!!
