*hi 5* Us Authors have gotta stick together. It's a tough world.
Anybody these days can be an author, come back when you have at least a New York Times Bestseller

That's a bit unfair. I know I'm not famous (yet), and I don't claim to understand how easy becoming an author is over in Bush-ville, but here in Australia it is bloody hard.
Not only do you have to have something "new", but a lot of publishers expect top-notch editing skills too.
Joby, let me give you a poser. I can turn the later FFs, 9 for example, into a decent book that'd be a best seller, with little change to the overall story.
Now take Final Fantasy I. Try turning that into a book and not agree with me. Where is the dialogue? As in conversation that furhters the plot? The so-called "Light Warriors" don't say a single word!!! The only thing I've seen them do is exclaim, and shake their hands in the air after lighting a crystal, but this last one could be in celebration or anger...I can't tell.
Hell, Joby's on my ignore list, so I can't see the trash he's spewing anyway, except in other people's quotes.

It's really easy here in the States...I mean...there are some companies who publish books just for the hell of it.

Ah. I think they call those guys "vanity publishers" over here. Prolly the same name over there too. They are well worth steering clear of.

I think that's the same term, but I'm not making any effort to have things published anyway.

And that's the truth! Okay, I'm only a fanfic author at the moment, but my original stuff is slowly getting there....

Hi, i'm new to here.
I signed up cause I need to see if i'm the last sane person alive, or if i'm simply crazy.
I love FF, passionatly. FF7 is undoubtably my all time favorite game. (second comes Halo)
I loved FF3, 5, 6, and 8 too. 9 was good, not as much as usual, but still pretty good.
Then.... 10 came out. I dislike 10. alot. Why? Because the main character is a jock. A normal water polo player who hates daddy... Turned into a hero. Then to top it off you have Yuna, who could be emo, but just sulks and hides it all. And don't get me started on Chalies Angels... er, i mean FF10-2 This was a low point for them... Nobuo Uematsu even signed off. I loved his music.
Oh, but then 11 reared it ugly head. Bandwagon! FF has always been about a single person, not millions. I can't belive they'd do that...
And now... 12. once again, the main guy character looks like a metro sexual and he's not even the main person! (from the looks of the trailer). The girl is! way to break tradition guys... And wow, it's doesn't look very souped up graphaclly either... but mybe it's being worked on. Ug... they even pulled all the good names and familar things and twisted them into new, unreal things.
the only summon/esper i recognized was Ultima.... and it was even scary! it's a woman holding up her skirt... wow.. i'm terrified by the power here.
Can i get some yay's/nay's? Why?/why not?
I'll just comment on the opening post..because I'm not looking through 10 pages of stuff =P - I am lazy like that.
1. You obviously don't understand the sort of life Yuna was leading.
2. Just deal with the fact that SE are broadening their horizons.
3. Ha! I laugh at your FFXII comments. Yes, I was annoyed with what they did, however, we could do with a bit of change. I thought it was pretty neat that a lot of the Espers were based on passed enemies/previous FF creatures.
Graphically, FFXII is amazing for a PS2 game. The summons look glorious, and the airships - wow, do I love them!
4. Ugh, another comment Vaan looking like..a what now? Get over iit, plz. What more do you want from a 17 year old? =O
Yeah, I'm done.

That's a big nay, my friend. I find your crieria for scrutiny silly. Are you telling me you passed up FFX and FFXII because Tidus is a jock, and the main character in FFXII is a girl? Do you really play RPGs, or are you just pretending?

Am I the only one who feels sorry for Joby, who is quite clearly a completely harmless 13-year-old who still thinks FFVII is a brilliant game, as probably did everyone at that age? I mean, at that age, I know I thought FFVII was a fantastic game. I also probably believed in Father Christmas, reindeer that can fly and the Easter flippin' bunny.
Joby, you seem like a nice guy. Come back here in a few years when your views on the FF games and games in general are much broader.

I felt a decline in the regular quality with FFX. But then, I felt this way because although every FFs have you running from point A to point B, FFX didn't even try to make you believe you still had some liberties. Everything was too linear. Then the XI came and I didn't play it much because I'm not into paying to play a game I'm supposed to OWN... Then XII came and my worries disappeared.
I haven't played a Final Fantasy that much since VII came out (no, I didn't start with VII, I started with the first back in the late 80s).
The only thing I think wasn't as great in XII compared to the other before it is the story. It was pretty straightforward with little twists or surprises in it. But the execution by which it was told totally blow the others away.
I have good faith in XIII and I don't think the series been declining. If anything, there's only one game in the regular series (excluding the spin-offs I mean) and it's X. Which was still great, but not as much as the others to me.
So I can't say the series has been on the decline just for one game.

Hynad, given that your chief complaint about X is its strong feeling of linearity, I think I actually would be interested in your thoughts about X-2. Assuming you played it, that is. You didn't mention it anywhere in your post there, so I'm wondering.
Hynad

I did play it, went up to 96% of it (that perfect ending is hard to get, never got there... yet), and thought it was ok. But I just don't consider it a regular FF. That's all. If I was to consider it a regular FF, then FFX AND X-2 would both be considered a decline in quality. The only thing I really enjoyed in FFX-2 was the return of the job system (although reintroduced in a silly way).
I always liked this system and the implementation in X-2 was well done for most of the jobs. But the story and pacing were poorly done and the pay back was not all that great.
The way it's not linear is a good idea, but the execution was not well done. And that's probably due to the much more light hearted story of the game. Most of the time, I just didn't really care what had to be done and the reasons it had to. Going for a non-linear story is a good idea. But in FFX-2, most of the many branches do not really fit with each others and in the end, most of it felt like a series of side-quest with a really thin main storyline involving Shuyin, Lenne and the vegnagun...

Hmm. I would tend to disagree, both about X-2 not being a regular / real FF and about the quality of story. But this particular topic really isn't the place for an extended debate regarding X-2. I make you the same offer I recently made to a couple of posters with similar complaints in another thread --- if you're willing to bring your complaints to a new thread in the Final Fantasy X-2 section, I'd be happy to post my thoughts on the matter.

OH! another one of these... that thought FF7 was so amazing that everything after it declined (I say this because I dislike 7, the only think I like... vincent he's awesome:P) I think 7 is pretty overrated to be completely honest. But then everyone has their own taste. Gotta appreciated that. But it just looks to me like you're one who dislikes the changes they make with FF games... I mean do you really want another game exactly like 7??!! NO THANK YOU.
I like to think on of the good point of SE is that they're constantly changing and pushing along new ideas... so maybe some of them aren't as liked as others but they roll with it and they're trying to improve they're games.
ABOUT THE GRAPHICS THING! That'd be due to the old PS2 it's on... They must have pretty much pushed it to it's limits like FFIX to the playstation.
OH ONE MORE THING! what was the deal with the tidus jock thing man? I thought that was a bit... low? And so what about him hating his dad? has that been in FF before ? :S did I miss it? honest question btw :P
There's nothng wrong with FFXI either... You say that's it's not about millions playing it's about it single player experience... SO?! do you get up every morning and put the same damn clothes on do the same damn thing every day?... I think not. CHANGE can be a very good thing my friend... and I think you should learn to embrace it and be a little more open minded...
I'd comment on more of your post... but I'm 100% sure it'd take me AGES to keep saying exactly what is wrong with it.
also if I've repeated points other people have made please excuse me as there's a hell of a lot of posts and I just can't be bothered to read them all.

Hey DC Cooper, maybe you should take some time looking at your own post and see what's wrong with it.

You write something like this and have the guts to talk about closed-minded people... A little introspection is in order here.
One advice: Try to put in your head that everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, and that yours is not "better" than any others here.
***Hynad leaves wondering how many years it will take for db Cooper to learn that...***

No, I look down on people who tell people they're wrong because they think differently and have different opinions.
db Cooper

I didn't mean WRONG I meant to me in my OPINION it is wrong. The think with opinions is that by having one you're not saying it's a definate thing... it's what you think. And to be fair I never meant to offend anyone... I made a mistake yes, one I intend to learn from, which I am sorry for but I don't really want to argue with you.
