Where do the stats of the Espers come from? And how do you know?
Magick Power.
I think.
Not sure it is just an 'educated' guess.

, there are 3 kinda espers, those you use 1MP gauge, those who use 2 and then 3,
the ones who use 1 MP gauge eventually you will become stronger than them...thats whats happening with me, the 2nd the 3rd are REEELLY strong,...but i might get stronger than them....i reely dont know.
but the stronger you are, the strong they will be, that what i have sought.

I wondered if you had to train it by summoning it and letting it battle like you would a normal character but I never saw a difference. Why are the even there if you become more powerful then them? I onced used Belias to fight a 4000hp Tyranox but he was slaughtered. My party finished it off with ease. Belias has the same hp as my second to worsest person and only does a tiny bit more damage than my best person. Another thing is that since they are one target, all the enemies are forced to attack them alone. The Aeons never had trouble with this because they were kick-ass. I can't really find a positive about Espers though. :-(
i almost never use belias. (my only esper right now). since i only have one mist charge, i preffer to start a quickening instead of summoning belias.

now that my friend i agree with you,
there are some espers can heal them selfs and some who also heal you,
i think this was to be onporpose, as the ones who dont heal them selves should be used against normal monsters, but against the bosses, use the esper who the boss is weak against his element [like fire stronger against water ].
I never really use Espers but I figure Belias sucks ass because he is the first Esper you obtain.
I would guess that some of the more hidden Espers really kick ass.
I've got about 5 Espers right now and I can only remember Belias, Mateus, and ExDeath.

Valefor had no problem kicking ass and she was the first aeon that Yuna got. Thats what made aeons cool was the fact that they could still kill ememies that had an advantage over them.

yeah, but you had control over all the aeons (even some with the magus sisters). but in FFXII they're hard to control because they rely on gambits. and the final moves don't do as much damage as quickenings. and they're also a sacrifice, because they require mist charges. Overall, I think you can't really depend on them as much in FFXII as you could in the previous ones.
Yeah, I think that is exactly what they were going for.

There's 13. 1 for each sign of the Zodiac, and the last one's supposed to be the sum total of all 12.

It won't be the exact same stats for your character and the Esper. But that is how they level up. It is based on the level of the Character who can summon it. It's somewhere in the strategy guide.

i have 11 of the espers sitting around with no master. Should i assign them to someone before i do any more levelling or will they automatically allign themself whenever i decide to unlock their license?

After defeating Bergan at Mt. Bur Omisace, you come out and walk down a set of stairs. Talk to everyone there and you're given an item, "Stone of the Condemner" I believe it's called. Use that stone on the waypoint at the back end of the first interior room of the Stillshrine (just touch it, you're given the option to use the stone with it) and you're teleported to a hidden area where you'll face Zeromus. I'm not sure about what level you should be - I just beat him at lvl's 56 - 59 and he was a cakewalk, but strategy is key in this battle. Read on here (
Thread 33821).

The Espers won't align themselves with anyone - you have to purchase their license for one of your characters - remember - once you purchase their license, only the person you purchased it for will be able to summon that Esper.
