I was wondering when we call the Final Fantasy 1-6 classics, we mean that they were created on the classic consoles? (snes and nes) Im really curious to know.

I think that's the reason too. You know, the old school consoles.
Well that was my point. Playstation 1 is now considered a classic console, are ff 7-9 classics now?
Actually, the PSX is based on roughly the same type of technology that the latest consoles are, whereas the first few in the series were made with radically different technology. I think that's a more fair way of defining the classics.
A classic is an item that has become a ubiquitous and unique symbol or icon of a time gone by, mainly because of its inherent quality or its representative status.

I agree with you on that.
Zulu, if i wanted the definition of classic itself i would search it on wikipedia too.
Then I don't understand your question? What exactly is it you don't understand?
We call them classics because of the definition I posted above.
Yes, but are they really "classics" according to the word definition? I like the games but they were not that good to be called classics with the real meaning are they? Thats my point, do we consider them here masterpieces of gaming or using the word "classic" to describe something dofferent these games have from the other gamesin the series (for example the console or the technology they were based as Prak has pointed out)
Zulu, strong reasoning trumps dictionary definitions because those can be flawed and differ wildly from one to the next.

Everyone has their own opinion about what makes a classic, dictionary definitions are just a base to build off of. Like, a PSX game COULD be called a classic, but 99% of people on here wouldnt call it that, because in their mind it isnt. Right now a PSX is more or less older technology thats been pretty much passed up as of around 2002-2003, where all the game makers went to the PS2, as it offered more power and such, but that doesnt make the PSX a classic. The NES could truly be called a classic, not just for the FF games, but for the system itself. Its where many people got their gaming start that were born in the... i guess 70's and early 80's. There arent many things that i would call a classic. But i agree how FFI - FFVI are called classics. (Except for the re-releases such as FFI FFII FFIII(DS!) and FFIV.

They are "classics" because they are the roots of Final Fantasy. 1-6 made the series what it is.

They all have one thing in common: they were 2d.

I think I like this answer. These games laid the groundwork for the series.

Classic.. Hmmmm... I'd have to agree. if it's 2-d FF it's a classic.. It's kinda like trying to compare a toaster oven to a microwave lol.. We all know a Microwave rocks, but you will never get that yummy goodness like you did with the toaster oven.. persoanlly FF2 is my favorite game of all time.. ever..
