Being someone who, apart from playing 96% off FFVI, hasn`t touched the FF classics i was keen to dig my teeth into one of the older FF games. So seeing that i have a Snes emulator on the PSP i thought it would be a perfect time to pick one and start playing a good game of FF, something that i haven`t done in a long long time.

However, seeing that a full-speed GBA emulator was released for the PSP i then thought i might as well play one of the remakes for the GBA. Enter FFIV. What can i say?. Although i`m just at the part in which i take the bard into my team i can already see that it`s going to be a wonderful game. Also, i love the relationship between Rydia and Cecil, it`s a relationship that i can see being a memorable moment and one that genuinely struck up a little emotion in me.

Also worth noting is that i`m really impressed with the music and battle system. For some reason i can`t stand the battles in FFVI while in FFIV it seems to be more easy on the eyes and generally more enjoyable.

Anyways, i`m just wondering how different is the GBA version from the SNES version?. Am i getting anything extra?. And please, no spoilers. :P

Yowza, FF just got interesting again~ :D

Please note that I do not support piracy of this sort.

It depends on which version of the SNES game you're talking about. If it's the original Japanese version, then the advantages are fewer. If it's the American version, then there are a ton of reasons to play the GBA game instead.

For one thing, the original difficulty is intact, whereas it had been nerfed for the American release. The GBA version has a better translation, a new dungeon, graphical tweaks, and is generally the best version of the game ever released. However, I would really recommend buying it since it's commercially available right now, even if you just intend to emulate it on your PSP.

Well, with my DS is half the country away with my brother so i`m afraid it`s pretty useless to buy it to be honest. Still, i know it`s very shitty getting it emulated but being big into the PSP emulation scene and having a full working GBA emulator right here it`s pretty tempting. Or should i just play the snes version to make you happy?. :-P

But yeah, i`m totally loving this game, it`s fantastic!.

Personally, I prefer the Chronicles version to both of these, but since that isn’t really an option here I won't go into it.

Basically, there really is no real reason to play the original SNES version over the GBA remake if you're just going to emulate it on your PSP. Battles are a lot faster in the Advance version, the graphics look nicer, the game is harder (well, more so than FFII US anyway), has a significantly improved translation (namely because the original was God-awful) and, without giving anything away, will provide you with MUCH more flexibility at the end of the game. The only problem with the game (apart from, you know, still being FFIV :p) is a few bizarre glitches with the battle system which generally doesn’t affect much.
