by participate, I mean would you run a server? (if you don't know how to set one up or what this means, I'd be more than willing to help you set things up-- but basically, it's a way for people here to download files from you)
if enough people are interested I'll get things going and add the forum.
you are ideal for this if:
1) you have bandwidth to spare
2) you have your computer on more or less all the time

I'll be posting tutorials assuming there's enough interest.

you can run them as few or as many hours a day as you like. but if it's only going to be one or two, it'd be rather pointless.
also, I'm pretty sure filezilla is just an FTP client, not an FTP server.

There is FileZilla Server and FileZilla FTP client, and I think I can provide around 6 or 8 hrs/day of server time.

Better to leave it to someone who know how to do.

Hello there, my first post on these threads, even if I already read them from time to time. ;)
So, yes, FTP is a great way to share files. I often download files from FTP servers, but, unfortunately, my upload rate is very very slow, and I never create FTP servers. Sorry...

I do not like FTP for uploading files to.
I had an account on Fasthosts some time ago which the only way to send HTML files was via the FTP. It kept saying "Operation time out". Even I'd disabled and re-configured the firewall, the problem wasn't lifted.
I've moved to another host that has a file manager and that is the method I prefer for uploading files.
My conclusion to this is I don't prefer FTP. If it wasn't for this problem, I would participate. I am sorry that I can't be of assistance. :(

I'd love to help but, sadly, the server that I use is not a server that I can alther to my needs...
That, and I think that FTP transfers have been disabled by the admin...

I would help if there was a tutorial but I've had bad experiences with FTPs and servers where I wouldn't be able to connect or the people that should be providing files were always offline. I'm afraid of this happening to GH.
Also, I don't have complete soundtracks, just bits here and there from all over, would that be a problem?

It could be a start...
Sadly, though, I also don't know the ups and downs of FTP transfers... Sarah should post the tutorials soon...

first of all, i would like to say hi to everyone, for i am new to the forum.
this website is like a heaven of music for me. I have never seen a site this big since gameing force audio. (RIP)
anyways
i would definently be interested in participating in being a server. i can devote at least 4 to 6 hours on certain days for now (in the process of moving) but once im seattled in, i will be getting some helluva bandwith to dish out, and i also have 4 hdds of music ready to roll.
keep me posted.

FTPs are cool, but I think establishing an IRC channel would be easier. You could list your video game rar's via XDCC packs, and the channels would be on an easily accessible server. If you don't know what IRC is, you can look it up HERE (

isn't there already IRC on the site? Assuming I can get past my university firewall (which could be the interesting part), I have the runtime and bandwidth to do some ftp-ing, along with the multiple gigs of music required.

Yeah i reckon i'd be up for that. Once we get our better router (which should be soon) it will be no problem. We do get unlimited uploads but i dont know how our ISP would react if we suddenly had a huge spike in usage. But i would host it for as long as possible anyway.

Usually ISPs give you warnings or updates saying "Your jump in usage seems odd" blah blah blah. Just tell them...you got porn crazy.
ISPs can tell the difference between upstream and downstream bandwidth. No one in their right mind would fall for that line when someone's uploading goes through the roof.

10-12-2006, 03:14 PM
Haha Yeah exactly. Its called sarcasm.
SilentAlex
10-12-2006, 03:19 PM
What they have to do with that? We can use more bandwith one day and less in another one!
BlackHeart103
10-12-2006, 03:33 PM
ISPs will still compare your average usage to any spikes in usage. They usually trigger a bandwidth usage response. Typical ISPs. :D

I will participate in the FTP. we can use a very good program named Easy File Sharing Web Server if you want the program i can upload for you.
I already have a cracked version of this program.
You can crate your own FTP using your IP, and the maximum capacity of the FTP is your hard drive (disk).
P.D.: I'm a spanish speaker so I don't know if my english is very good. :)
see you later.

this is an example of the program.
the download speed it depends of your internet conection

I'm also willing to participate, as my PC is online pretty much all day long. However, I only have DSL, so I'm not sure if I would have the sufficient bandwidth to run it as a server. (plus, you would have to walk me through the process, as I've never dwelved that far into networking)
Otherwise, I'm definitely interested in giving it a try.

Nyaa, sure, but I'm about to ask a really stupid question that every self-respecting person should know. What's bandwidth? I have an IP, I already have a (slow) FTP site (68.51.221.111), but if it costs money, then I dunno...I may still help though.
