Which Shin Megami Tensei in particular? I found them contrasting. I really enjoyed the "Fierce Battle" Theme from the "Shin Megamitensei III Nocturne Orignial Soundtrack (Disc 1). It really brought me into the game.

Usually, I don't care much for Battle music, but I'm a sucker for the theme in FFIX; bright and actually pretty good.

The best battle themes, in my personal opinion, are those are convey a really "epic" feeling to the encounter. That being said, the list of what my "favorite" are is constantly be changed by the release of new music. Off the top of my head, the top three:

1. The Organization 13 battle music from Kingdom Hearts 2
2. Megaman X vs. Zero from Megaman X5
3. Some song called "Lord of the Castle" from the newest Kingdom Hearts collection released.

and to the person that listed the Megaman X3 intro stage music, while I commend you for having EXCELLENT taste in musical themes, that's not a battle theme really, just a stage theme! :-(

Heheh. I agree with you completely about that one. BUT...the problem with that particular theme is that the battle is over in 10 seconds. Until I beat the game using X, I never got to hear it because zero slaughtered X almost instantly.

In FFVII: Advent Children.... I like the battle ... I think the song is called: One Winged Angel ?

One to Save Us All -- Breaking Benjamin (but they sing... I don't know if you're looking for instrumental or not ...and yes, it's a Halo song... but it's still good) I love that song.

I would probably have to say "Our Blood Boils - vs Sigma 1st" from Rockman X7 and "vs Lumine ~ Second Form" from Rockman X8.

The Metal Gear Solid battle music is very awesome !

I used a program called GarageBand for the Mac. I basiclly split apart some of the track peices, and just added a few drums. I'm trying to improve it, planning on useing it for a BOR mod that I'm working on

-Emperor: Battle for dune (PC) ...Am not sure if the music's any good if you;ve not played the game but walking Dune with an army of minotaurs, the music just kicks in...Brrr

-Outcast (PC) ....Everything about outcast is awesome

the best thing about a nobuo uematsu battle theme is that he makes it sound epic and still keeps a strong melody. so it's exciting as well. like a game-sound and an epic feel too.

some composers just make a god awful noise and you wanna just turn it off.

I think it all depends of tastes... For me Devil May Cry Battle Music is great (it "inspires" you to shoot and slash everyone that pops up), MGS too... But I'm afraid Final Fantasy Themes don't stay behind.

MGS: Mantis's Hymn (Kinda dark gothic)

I always thought Neon Genesis Evangelion had a great battle theme, "Angel Attack". It really conveys a sense of terror.

Also, Legend of Legaia has two great battle themes, "Brand of the Holy Knuckles" and "Attack".

But my favorite has to be "Silence" from Shadow of the Colossus. It's the music that plays when the battles begin against the two flying colossi (and, I think, the underwater one, too).

The Final Attack on various Metal Slug games is superb, too.

The Final Destination (Alternate) Theme on Super Smash Bros. Melee is galvanizing, and never becomes repetitive to me. Battlefield (Versus Mode) is another great track, too.

March to Doom, Act on Instinct, Industrial, Drill and Radio from Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn I find addictive. Airstrike, Rain In the Night and Recon are good, too.

There's a rather unorthodox tune I must mention, as well. It's the Battlezone song from Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party. It's a germane song to listen to for the conflict occurring between two warring teams of worms.

If you like movie battle themes, then Duel of the Fates (Star Wars Ep. 1) is the best choice. There's also some neat themes in Matrix movies.

This game was mentioned before, but Seiken Densetsu 3 had some really good boss music. Especially High Tension Wire and The Sacrifice 2-3.

There's also Star Wolf from the Star Fox series. Great stuff.

Lastly, I'll recommend Valkyrie Profile; Fighting the Shadowy Gods is so kickass.
