i know im going to get ripped apart for this but hey, dont care.
i've just started playing kingdom hearts again, and i cant work out for the life of me why squall keeps getting refered to as leon.
its been ages since i played FFVIII, so if the answers in there somewhere, sorry for being stupid. any help you can give would be great
i've never played kingdom hearts, but i know that Squall's last name is Leonhart. he also has a Limit Break ending called Lionheart, but it most likely has to do with his last name.
EDIT:
In KH he chooses the name Leon to break away from his past or something.
It was because he felt guilty that he couldn't keep his home world from being overtaken by the heartless. So to part from his old self, Squall took up the name Leon.

In KH he says to Yuffie he doesn't want to be called Squall, go figure...
It says it in plain view if you look up Leon in the journal. Tells you everything about every character in it.
So yeah, it was a stupid question. Expecially if it's answered in the game already.

I think he's Leon for many reasons, though my cousin's got my copy of KH, and I never did look up Squall's file; but, my guess is this: one, Leon's a damn cool name, as mentioned before, part of Leonheart, and if you didn't know, it's French for "lion," king of beasts, the pelt and sport of kings; two, Leon's the lead character in Resident Evil: 2—coincidence? maybe, but they share similar traits, and they's both coo'—also, Leon's a character who started in Virtua Fighter 2, who also shares yet more similar traits. I think it's us hardcore fans who can see the correlations.
I don't really care because the facts as to why he changed his name from Squall to Leon is there, so nothing else matters.
Not dissing on you liking the name, Leon, because I like it too.

He changed his name to Leon, because the world he was from was destroyed by the Heartless, however Squall simply stood by and let it happen. So, when he moved to Hollow Bastion ( Radiant Garden in KH2 ), he changed his name to Leon, along with his personality, and swore to always fight for what is right. He does not like being called Squall because it reminds him of his old self, the one who let his home world be destroyed.
There... oh and by the way, you can access the Journal at any time after Donald and Goofy join your party.

Ive never played or seen a KH game so be nice.
But what your saying is that the world from which FF8 was based was destroyed in the KH storyline?
Thats kinda cool..
The stories of FF has nothing to do with KH. So Squall never came from Balamb or anything like that. His character is just there, his world isn't it. You'll know the story if you play the game. And it's an awesome game too!
