Shadow of the Colossus - one of the best purchases in my VGM collection.

Okami - that's a huge OST.

Final Fantasy Tactics (reprint) - killer introduction to Sakimoto and Iwata (the man deserves to be known. 'Under the Stars' is awesome and poignant).

Final Fantasy XII (LE) - another huge package. 4 CDs of Sakimoto = win.

Tsugunai ~ an cinniuint - A Mitsuda album I nearly missed. Suddenly thought of it one day, and got it after sampling the whole OST. Worth it.

Sailing to the World - Seventh Seal RPG OST. Nice experimental work from Mitsuda. Great compositions.

Xenogears (reprint) - A midi of 'Flight' back when midi players and not Winamps were hot on the newly launched Internet was my first introduction to Yasunori Mitsuda. 'Flight' was all that I needed to discover Xenogears' OST. Sheer brilliance.

Xenogears ~ CREID - How could I not after getting the in-game score? ;)

Vagrant Story (reprint) - My most beloved Sakimoto score. Dark, oppressive, sinister, and full of nuance and medieval atmosphere to the end. Not a single bad track (I got used to the two remixes as well).

Front Mission 5 - this is ace stuff. It's like electronica and techno and militaristic beats in one package. A solid score - no filler tracks, IMO.

Ace Combat 5 ~ The Unsung War - the killer vocal final battle track did me in. This is stunning work. Damn the fact that VG OSTs are so expensive, because I was also looking at acquiring AC4 and AC Zero.

Project Sylpheed - It's been a while since I've heard techno and electronica coming out of S-E, but when Nakano and Fukui are on the same album, that's when I start paying attention. The few sound clips on the official site and the trailers were enough to whet my techno appetite. Here's hoping I get it soon. :)

As do I. 100% of my OSTs are either directly shipped from Japan, or the HK online store I use stock up from Japan's inventory. All of mine are authentic. One bad brushup with a bootleg OST is all I needed to watch out for the fakes and get the real ones - expensive perhaps, but at least I'm not giving money to bootleggers.

Bought them all in Japan or how did you get them?

Mostly online stores that deal with Japanese music like CDJapan, Tower Records Japan, Amazon.com Japan, YesAsia.com and so on. That's what I use to get current/semi-current game soundtracks, which is basically how I got all my Square-related soundtracks.There are also a lot of eBay merchants that deal exclusively with Japanese imports and I got some of my rarer soundtracks from there, like the Street Fighter II Box Collection that included the Street Fighter II - Original Perfect Collection or the Phantasy Star Collection(s). For the other hard to find items, I used Yahoo! Japan auctions, especially when dealing with soundtracks that were attached to Limited Edition versions of games. Basically, NIS and Neverland-related games. And finally, on some rare instances, I get them from forums like Soundtrack Central , which is how I got my copy of Langrisser II OGM.

Of course, some of the soundtracks I have did not come cheap, so I can see why you said what you said after I made my post.

That aside, I wish I could go to Japan just to browse some second hand shops since there is one RPG series I would like to complete before I stop buying into game music series, but I'm having a difficult time locating two of the soundtracks. If you, Yamazaki, can guess which series that is, I'll give you a sealed copy of the Shinobi OST, which I believe is out of print.

unfortunately a lot of Japanese shops know how rare the soundtracks are. I've seen a lot of stuff that costs more than 100$ or even stuff like the Chaos Engine OSTs for 300(!)$!

I'll give you a 20% chance at guessing the right series, then.

Off the top of my head, there are five "RPG" series, each with more than five "OSTs", that I currently do not own any soundtracks to:

1) Dragon Quest series
2) Front Mission series
3) Megami Tensei series
4) Shining series
5) Seiken Densetsu series

One of those series listed above I'm interested in.

Anyway, you can still find great deals on older Japanese soundtracks on Amazon.co.jp and Yahoo! Japan, though you'll also find people asking for a huge amount of money for the same title. You just have to be patient.

Of course, there are some soundtracks that will always cost at least $150 for a decent copy, like Super Metriod - Sound in Action, The Legend of Zelda - Sound & Drama, and the two Phantasy Star Collections. And like you said, there are several other soundtracks that go around a $100 used/new.

Decent reasoning, though Megami Tensei soundtracks are relatively simple to find -- It's just that most of them are kind of pricey (Especially the Demon Summoner Original Soundtrack) and there's like around 15 original soundtracks to collect in the entire series. Now, Shining the Holy Ark OST and Shining Wisdom OST are much harder to find, I think, and I know that Holy Ark is around the $150-$250 range when found.

Anyway, I am now looking for all the soundtracks to the Shining series (The correct answer), trying to finish out the one series I probably should have bought into before most of the other ones on my list. So, to update my list above:

Kefka's Domain, the OFFICIAL USA release of FFVI's OST. That is the ONLY OST I own, and its a damn good one too. I think this US version is pretty rare too!

I only have Persona 3, Atelier Iris 2, Phantom Brave, FFVII and Reunion, FFVI and REZ, all of which came with editions of the games except for FF and REZ

Ain't that hard to find if you search in Asia for it.

I don't know if you looked at my post on page 4 of this topic, but I definitely got rid of my RPG/SRPG soundtrack collection. So, as far as my VGM collection goes, it's just the 2D/2.5D versus fighting collection, plus a few other additions that I haven't added yet. At any rate, thanks for the compliment.

As for your collection, I was wondering why you don't have the Yggdra Union soundtrack since it pairs nice with either Riviera soundtrack. If your Final Fantasy soundtrack collection is legit, then that's quite impressive as well since there are so, so many Final Fantasy soundtracks out there. Now that I think about it, I was only missing one semi-rare, expensive Final Fantasy soundtrack album: Final Fantasy Finest Box. I believe that's the one that had the original soundtracks to the handheld versions of Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI.

Looking from my last post in February 2007, I more than doubled my collection from 12 to 27 CDs in the span of an year. The list just seems to grow every couple months when the good stuff comes out. Maybe I can hit 30 soon enough.

I don't know if you looked at my post on page 4 of this topic, but I definitely got rid of my RPG/SRPG soundtrack collection. So, as far as my VGM collection goes, it's just the 2D/2.5D versus fighting collection, plus a few other additions that I haven't added yet. At any rate, thanks for the compliment.

As for your collection, I was wondering why you don't have the Yggdra Union soundtrack since it pairs nice with either Riviera soundtrack. If your Final Fantasy soundtrack collection is legit, then that's quite impressive as well since there are so, so many Final Fantasy soundtracks out there. I would say that I started collecting VGM in early 2002, so it would be around six years now, and yes, I have invested many a penny into my collection. It was a little hard to abandon the RPG/SRPG soundtrack, especially with all the great memories from the games that the soundtracks brought out, but it became a bit overwhelming late 2007. That was partly my fault for expanding my collection to cover almost all major RPG/SRPG series, but I couldn't draw the line anywhere. So, it's more regret I feel for dumping my RPG/SRPG collection than anything else.

As for Yggrdra Union, the music is from the same composers as Riviera, so I thought you might enjoy it if you liked Riviera's soundtrack. The developers of Riviera also worked on Yggdra Union, so it has a similar look and feel to it even though Yggdra Union is more of an SRPG.

Yeah, when I said I was going to upload it, I thought the soundtrack was difficult to obtain, but as it turns out, I have seen several new copies floating around for about $11. So, I'm a little hesitant to upload something that most people could afford if they weren't so cheap.

Unfortunately my VGM CD collection is only a meager 4 CDs. Many of my favourite VG soudntracks haven't ever been released and the ones that have are as everyone knows often rather expensive or out of print. Plus there aren't many UK/ European specialist distros with decent prices and sensible postage (that I know of). Its silly thats its often easier to buy releases from one man underground black metal bands from deepest Russia than many VG scores. Amazon seems to be improving the situation slightly though especially with the more recent and high pofile releases.
