I was just wondering which anime show would be a good one to get on dvd? I was thinking of the vision of Escaflowne.
TeknoBlade

Desert Punk
Abenobashi
Cowboy Bebop
Kino's Journey
Yugo the Negotiator
Boogiepop Phantom
Escaflowne is cool, but mech anime gets boring to me so I don't recommend it.

i saw the movie and although the title is the name of a mech, it didnt seem too focused on mechs.

i've bought Bebop, Champloo, Planetes, EVA, FLCL, Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze sofar
only thing i'm still missing is Azumanga Daioh wich i will probably get sometime around christmas
watch them on fansub before you buy tho
you'd be an idiot to shell out cash before you know you'd possibly like it

Bebop, ftw. Besides, you can get the entire series off ebay plus the Bebop movie for cheap. I have the entire series on my computer. ^_^ Thanks to Nick.
Trigun was a good series, I'm not a big fan of the western animes but it's one of my favorites.
Champloo's a little expensive for the time being because it's broken up into sets and it's not exactly 5 years old. I'm not sure if the entire series in English has come out.

Escaflowne is not really about the mecha. It's a really nice series and definitely worth to get on DVD.
But whatever you do, get the japanese language + english sub version. Dub = suck.

Lmao, bought? Yeah right. Because Nick's a sweetie face all the episodes fucking rock the audio and visual department and bootleg is way better than paying money.
Well, no shit Champloo's been completed, I'm talking complete box set. That's why it's damn expensive, you have to buy each mini set thingy-ma-jig.

In general, anything with mech battles, 5.0 Audio and decent extras is worth owning on DVD. Good luck with that last one though...

i was referring to the us distributed dvd's, the last dvd came out a few months ago
and i've yet to find a bootleg thats as good and clean as the officially published dvd's
especially in Bebops case with the new 5.1 Remix edition

Which anime show is worth buying a dvd of?
1. Ranma 1/2
2. Ruroni Kenshin/ Samurai X
3. Super Space Fortress Macross
4. Inuyasha
5. Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex ;)
... and lastly, not forgetting "FFShrine The Anime", full of emo drama and dry humour. :p

if your gonna/wanna start a dvd collection. i always like to recommend to go for movies short series over long series.
mostly movies though. you almost can't go wrong with movies. and if you do, at least it didn't cost that much. 20 bucks tops? not much of a waste.
i only buy series boxsets if i've seen them before on tv/borrowed/rent/internet and if i absolutely fell in love with it or enjoyed it very very much.
OR, that rare occasion when advfilms and rightstuff have super mega sales and it'd be stupid to not buy a few even if you've never seen them before.
i got pretear and mezzo box sets for like 70% off. just isnane!!! lol and pretear endedup being very awesome. i havne't seen all of mezzo yet. but i know i'll like it. i saw mezzo forte (very nice winkwink) and the first dvd was good.
anyway. since i highly recommend movies over series. here are my top picks
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Akira
Ninja Scroll
Spriggan
Ghost in the Shell
Fatal Fury: the motion picture (i love the shower scene with Mai in it ^^)
X
Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge
Appleseed (the original. i haven't seen that "new" one)
Black Magic: M66
Macross Plus the movie (or you can get the 4 part series) but the movie has a nice tity shot lol
Street Fighter the movie
movies rule. i gotta watch some more. lol.
anyway if you really want shows. and you'll risk taking someone's opinion of a show and buying it straight up. i really really gotta say.....
Princess Tutu
that's it. just that one. I am currently in LOVE with that show. it is just lovely. if you don't like shoujo's then piss the fuck off and don't bother me. but damn i love this show. i'm still waiting for the boxset to come out cause i'm fucking pouncing on that one the minute i find out its out.

Honestly, depending on what genre you're more interested in, the choices can get quite expansive.
So I'll list a few of the movies/series I've enjoyed/currently enjoying:
Movies:
1. Ghost In the Shell/Innocence
2. Akira (Original release, not the horrible pioneer redub)
3. Battle Angel Alita
4. Appleseed/Remake (The remake is a phenomenal movie)
5. Street Fighter (Original movie, not Alpha)
6. Vampire Hunter D (Better than Bloodlust IMO)
7. Kite
8. Blood: The Last Vampire
9. The Record of Loduss War
10. Macross Plus
11. X
12. Wings of Honneamise
Series:
1. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex/2nd Gig
2. Ergo Proxy (IMO, the best new series currently in '06 and beyond)
3. Serial Experiments Lain
4. Neon Genesis Evangelion (Favorite Series)
5. Trigun
6. Naruto
7. Helsing
8. Cowboy Bebop
9. El Hazard
I could go on forever, and I've probably repeated alot of people here, but if I have, it's evident that the repeated titles are truly classics.
I would HIGHLY suggest Ergo Proxy
It's a phenomenal (newer) series in the vain of GITS. Although not COMPARABLE to GITS, it does pose some of the same questions: Why am I here? Am I nothing more? etc.

I think I recall there being a brief bit of fandom over Record of Lodoss War on these forums some years ago, and I believe that the entire series goes for about $20 if you can find it.
Never watched it myself, as it seemed to be highly cliche fantasy stuff, but hell, $20.

I wasn't here to witness that, but I could understand why. It's still a phenomenal series, and spawned quite a few games (Mainly for the PC Engine/PCFX in Japan)
And you're right, for $20? Point me in that direction.
Edit: I nearly forgot: Bubblegum Crisis was a favorite of mine as well. Both the original series, and the "newer" one.

It starts out with giant fantasy cliches, but the OAV gets really good. Orson will always be one of my favorite characters.

You know, I was watching "Attack the Gas Station" the other night, and thought: "You know, I remember seeing this in a forum once..WAIT! That NDI person loves this movie."
Then I snapped back to reality, and grasped the total awesomeness of the movie when Rockstar kept trashing the phones in the clerks office. Classic.

Haha. See? That's where most people turn away a great series.
It's like, similar to the original coverart for many a NES/SNES game.
Most of that art was horrendous to the point of almost defiling a great series (Anyone recall the original Mega Man/Megaman 2 box art? ROFL)

Question. I got Escaflowne and it turned out to be my favorite anime of all time. I liked that it didnt focus on mechs too much. Are their any other series like that kind of. Not counting Knights of Lodus which i thought sucked after watching about 2 episodes

wow, it's been a while since i've seen it. i never ever got to see the last episode of tenchi in tokyo, though. it would always go to the episode before every single time, i'd have to fly or something the day the last episode aired. i was sooo pissed.
so is it true that it's basically hentai when it's uncut?

Yeah FMP was pretty good. Does anyone here no any show where basically every episode contributes to the main story. Like FMP was good, but then they would have these random one episode side stories instead of one long one like Escaflowne
You'll find very few shows that don't meander a bit. In a lot of cases, it's what makes a show truly great. For example, R.O.D the TV was an exceptional series that took a really long time getting into the main plot because it took the time to thoroughly develop its characters.
Anyway, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that you'd probably be interested in is Last Exile. And perhaps the recent Captain Herlock series if you're even remotely familiar with the franchise.
