it started with Final Fantasy (the title came about because it was their last shot before they had to formally announce bankruptcy), which was a knock-off version of Dragon Warrior
just to let you know, Enix was bigger than Square in Japan...and just because their name comes first doesn't mean that their titles are doing well...so IF SquareEnix gets into trouble, they're more apt to look to a successful Enix title to pull them through in Japan FIRST...not the losers across the Pacific

That's the biggest load of crap I've read since Iceberg's last poke at the FFVII-haters. zetsumei has a great point; Why would Squeenix bother to create excellent titles now that they've legions of raving fanboys to exploit? First of all, Sony does not develop the Final Fantasy series, that is Square-Enix.
Second, they are most likely remaking the games because the originals are all on obsolete and outdated consoles.
They are also probably doing this on Nintendo systems because the originals were on NES and SNES so Gameboy Advance is the easiest to transfer them to because it is basically a handheld NES.

Messages have meanings...regardless of grammar or spelling. Correct grammar and spelling were standardized in order to help others understand what another means...but it also makes the message easier for the reader to read through, and may also reflect on the writer's writing-skill....
But grammar and spelling isn't the only factor to determine intelligence!

Not every game should be a treat for the critics. Though those games usually are the most deep, and by a critical eye, the highest quality...the depth of some may drive many people away. You may say that they're too simple-minded or dumb to appreciate it...and that may be true....
But a game that's only "elitist" or "esoteric" isn't a very flexible game.
That's why Google is so wonderful! It's very simple...but the creator's somewhere in the billions or so....

I remembered back in the days when sales reflected on the overall quality of the games. Today, we still get idiots hailing FF7 as the greatest game of all time without paying so much as a word of honor towards games with much better design, execution and implementation. Games like Legend of Legaia, Vagrant Story, Star Ocean 2, Tales of Eternia, Grandia are all examples of games that are clearly superior in every way when compared to FF7. (Well, I wouldn't say that about Legend of Legaia's craphics.) I'd go so far as to say that even Beyond the Beyond, of all games, is superior in quality to FF7.

vagrant story was a good game...as were Star Ocean 2, Valkyrie Profile, and Grandia (all of which were superior to FF7 in terms of gameplay, story, graphics, and music)

You`ve convinced me that 4 games I have never played and probably never will are better than Final Fantasy VII.

Yes, it's basically Secret of Mana, hopped on steroids. It's complicated, action-oriented, requires on-the-fly-strategic thinking and it's challenging.

Legend of Legaia is the first game that utilizes the CBS engine for gameplay. It also features the innovative combo system in which Arts can be learned. The basic arts are learned, while the more powerful arts are discovered by trial-and-error. The enemies are also quite tough, but not unbeatable.

Star Ocean 2 has action-oriented chaotic battles that would blow away anyone who isn't used to the system. In addition to that, a storyline that varies on a lot of player decisions. Private actions which can unlock characters, items and quests. There's also a skills system which is quite complex and can affect a lot of aspects of gameplay and item creation, which is another unique feature.

Grandia has a very endearing storyline with quite a few twists and a good share of amusing moments. The battle system features a lot of strategy, placement and timing and it plays out in real-time. The weapon and magic building system, although somewhat broken, is a pretty damn good idea which I am sad to see gone in the later games.

Tales of Eternia is an example of a game that is done well, and almost entirely in 2-D. It features a lot of design implementations that turned out pretty ace. There's 3 different ways you can go about learning techs for the characters and only one of them work for each character. Considering that there's 6 PC's in the game, you get 2 PC pegged to each skill acquisition method. Well-rounded imo. One of them is fringing, which gives 2 of the characters different skills based on the different combinations of craymels they have, as such, it's a zero-sum game. Having one Craymel artes available usually meant sacrificing 2 or more other craymel artes. The cooking system is also very well done, it involves the acquisition of recipes from chefs, the purchase of food, and the creation of the dishes. The sucess rate of making a dish depends on the character's skill in cooking that dish. The sucess rate increases with every attempt, and mastering a certain combination of dishes also means learning a combination dish. The combat system in this game is also it's high point, it's side-scrolling, plays like a fighting game, everything is in real time and better performance in battle meant better rewards. The best part is, players can freely switch the difficulty in combat between normal, hard and mania, defeating a boss in mania mode usually means better rewards too. There's also lots of sidequests that would keep the player occupied outside of following the storyline.

Beyond the Beyond has a timing system which increases or decreases damage from an attack depending on how well the button is timed.

What does FF7 have to offer in terms of gameplay in comparison to that? If you liked FF7 the best then that's fine, but to place it above the other games in terms of quality is an insult to any self-respecting gamer.

If you're interested, in any of the above, I can easily set you up with ISO rip torrents of those games for download. You just have to provide the PSX emulator/plugins or CD-Burner/CD-R/Modded PSX yourselves.
