Question: How many Wii hardware do you plan to sell in three years from the launch?

Iwata: I do not intend to declare how many Wii we will be selling today, but Wii will be a failure if it cannot sell far more than GameCube did. In fact, we shouldn't continue this business if our only target is to outsell GameCube. Naturally, we are making efforts so that Wii will show a far greater result than GameCube.

found that kind of amusing ! they consider the gamecube a failure? ;-;;

What's this, starting to make a thread about everything Nintendo like I do?

Also, the Gamecube didn't do well at all. Last time I checked, it sold only 16 million units, but that was several months ago. I'd bet that it's not much higher than 20 million. The DS, if it hasn't already, is going to outsell the Gamecube within the next couple months. There wasn't much third-party support for the Gamecube at all, there wasn't many top selling games for the console, Nintendo did a poor job to market it, etc.

But yeah, I would say it was a failure for Nintendo. One thing I found interesting in that article, was Mr. Miyamoto said he is currently working on a secret project but can't tell us about it for another 6 months or so. Perhaps its Mario 128? A new IP? We just have to wait, unfortunately.

gamecube sold ~21 million units. the xbox sold ~24 million.

a console being a failure shouldn't be about market share though. nintedo has obviously been moving more into the niche appeal sector than mass-market appeal. I mean, this is just a hunch, but financially, I'm pretty damn sure the gamecube was more successful than the xbox. beyond that though, I think I had more fun playing gamecube things than anything else this generation. ;(

considering nintendo's stated that mario 128 turned into super mario galaxy and it was the initial reason the wii was developed, I doubt mario 128 will be it.

Close enough.

Hey I had the most fun this generation with the Gamecube as well, but we are just two of few people who did.

Where are you pulling this from? I never once saw Nintendo saying that SMG (lol ndi) is what Mario 128 is.

guess they didn't say it directly, but it looks pretty damn obvious that's what they're alluding at:

Q: Mario 128 will be released for Revolution, then?

MIYAMOTO: Yes, of course! It's no surprise, but, of course, we will rename it. That won't be the only surprise of next year, though. We based the Revolution around this new type of game. Mario 128 played a large role in the Revolution's conception, much like Mario 64 in its time. But we won't just be focusing on Mario. We're working on some very impressive games which push interactivity to the max—games of a new era.

I think there was something more definite somewhere but I can't find it ;(

also: my points were that the sales were similar to the xbox, and that plenty of people really enjoyed gamecube games. considering that, I'm surprised they essentially just publicly stated it was a failure.

edit, found more !

GAMESMASTER: What inspired Super Mario Galaxy and what does it mean for Mario 128?

MIYAMOTO: Well, Mario 128 was a collection of different experiments. Super Mario Galaxy takes a lot of the experiments from Mario 128 and implements them in the game. Because of that it's partly 128 but there are also elements that existed in Mario 128. I don't know when we'll be able to bring those out.

What Miyamoto says here seems to explain that Mario 128 is not a game as such, but more like a project with which Miyamoto developed new innovations which Mario could use in his later games. This appears to leave us with the conclusion that we may never see Super Mario 128 in its finished form, but instead see Mario games in the future containing the concepts which were developed within the project, the first of these apparently being Galaxy.

It doesn't say they consider GameCube a failure. It says their objective is for Wii to outsell GC, so if that doesn't happen they will have failed.

the fact that they said they shouldn't even be in this business if they can't perform better than the GC did kind of implies failure to me.

It sold a bit here alright but how many shops do you know of sell gamecube games? If theres not many places to buy games for it its a bit of a turn off isnt it.

Yeah, that last quote of yours Sarah is understandable. I remember an early screenshot of what was presumably 128 Marios scrunched together, and I thought it was pretty neat.
