What!? No...wait, not the whole series but the beginning was sort of boring but helped bring out the character's personalities and show some of Kenshin's past and moves, but when Saito came in, that's when it got good. And yeah, the first OST was kinda of plain but the second and third OSTs kicked ass. And of course, the movie OSTs were better because they were done by one my favorites, Taku Iwasaki

I'm surprised I never posted in here before.
The first series that caught my ear was Yakitate!! Japan (example: "Yakitate!! Japan" main theme). Being my first series watched intentionally and to competition, I was especially impressed with the effort they put towards it music. I wasn't expecting something that I would eventually download the soundtrack for.
The next series that I took a liking to for music was Ouran High School Host Club (example: "Introduction and Waltz for Piano"). I probably wouldn't have enjoyed that series nearly as much if it weren't for the music. Similarly, Nodame Cantabile (ex. varied), which revolves around musical performances by the main characters, had predictably great music.
I experienced Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei only recently, and I rather enjoyed the music in that, especially Itoshiki Nozumu (the titular Mr. Despair)'s Theme.
My tastes, if you couldn't see through the examples, include mostly instrumental, orchestrated music using a wide variety of professional instruments.

If I had to choose one anime (movie or series), I'd probably go with the Japanese version of the Dragon Ball series (DB, DBZ and DBGT). Lots of great memories for me with that anime. And the music has stayed in my head all this time.
These others had some great soundtracks as well:
Berserk
Ninja Scroll (movie)

Ghost in the Shell (movie)
Street Fighter II (Japanese version)

By far, some of the highest quality compositions I know. I've been listening to these two soundtracks for... oh, I dunno, 4 years or so. It continues to be a rich experience in many ways. So many genres are touched... why, I am Brazilian by birth and citizenship, and you can't imagine how surprised I was to find some bossa nova in this Japanese anime. Here's a Youtube link to this piece (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKU-5aYHenM).

This is kind of a broad question. So rather than saying specific anime soundtracks, I'll name my favorite composer and singer.
1.) (Composer) Yuki Kajiura- I love most of Kajiura's work both in anime and game soundtracks.
2.) (Singer) Megumi Ogata- Ogata has a beautiful voice that can calm even the most tense people. Here's an example of her work. This is a song titled 'Blue Moon'. Link:

I generally feel that the best soundtracks are the orchestral type (like ones composed by Kaoru Wada [ie Ninja Scroll, Inuyasha]), but it really depends on the type of title. Berserk has a great soundtrack, but then again, so does Cowboy Bebop, and they are at different ends of the spectrum.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but since when Naruto had good music? I mean, i can give you the right to say that with Bleach, Saint Seiya or even One Piece... but with Naruto? (I liked the music when i was a naive kid a couple of years ago, but with time you notice that the music is bad) But well, To each their own i guess.
So, good music in anime... hmm, FullMetal Alchemist, or the very 1st O.S.T. of Hellsing is really good. Also for what i can remember Zeta Gundam, Gundam Wing and the Macross series has some really great score.
Oh yeah! And Gurren-Lagann too, that series contains so much win.

If you ask me, the best osts I've heard so far in anime would be:
The Third ~Aoi Hitomi No Shoujou~ OST and OST2 (just epic, what else u need?)
Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas Ost (epic medieval stuff + some dark themes)
Valkyria Chronicles Ost (yes the anime one is different from game one)
Seiken No Katanakaji OST (again medieval music!)
Princess Mononoke OST ( Joe Hisaishi scores big on this one, probably would be a draw with Laputa and Nausicaa ost, but this one is more grand.. BIG!)
Koukaku no Regios Sound Restoration 1&2 (worth a check for those whole like really futuristic Osts with a lots of synthetic vst instruments xD)
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed/Destiny Ost (the whole 8 soundtracks are worth checking)
Fairy Tail Ost ( one of best celtic style kinda ost xD)
Fate/Stay Night Ost (most versatile ost I've heard)
Overall Ranking:
1: The Third ~Aoi Hitomi No Shoujo~
2: Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas
3: Seiken no Blacksmith
4: Fate/Stay Night
5: Fairy Tail
6: Princess Mononoke
7: Gundam Seed/Destiny
8: Valkyria Chronicles
9: Koukaku no Regios
(again this ranking depends on taste, some people like more other stuff)

Ranma 1/2 gets my vote -- at least when the music was handled by Hideharu Mori and Kenji Kawai. I've spent a lot of years collecting their work for Ranma 1/2, and I never get tired of listening to it. I'm a gnat's wing from having collected every single piece of score that they officially released for the show, and that makes me happy. Absolutely adore their work.
Akihisa Matsuura's work on the show, however... well, I'll just say I'm not keen and move on. I really felt like the show lost something special when his music became the predominate stuff. I almost never listen to his contributions, even though I've gone through great lengths to collected it for the sake of completion (although I do really enjoy the OVA work).
Runner up, for me, would be Trigun. Beautiful work in that show, some really moving tracks as well as some disturbing stuff, and the action cues work gloriously too. I can't wait to see Badlands Rumble.

Cowboy bebop, Ghost in the shells, MACROSS FRONTIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is very gradual to give an opinion.
Like Razgriz103 said, I do not agree very much, not taking down is opinion, that is not my objective, I understand why he choose it. Yoko Kanno's amazing is in there, yes. But my personal opinion I'm tired of this kind of soundtrack she done on cowboy bepob and GITS SAC, and recicle it to other animes recently. :/
I miss the great orchestra compositions of her, even based on famous classical compositions. I used to love Cowboy Bepop soundtrack (maybe i still love, I'm just trying to get to a point :)) but hearung the same kind of alternative as she is doing all the time, I'm tired of a LOT of vocal songs and I want to listen Real compositions from her. Now I mostly hear Brain Powerd adn Escaflowne soundtracks, or anything "orchestrated" by her. If I want to listen GISTS SAC I always go listen ost 3, which is my favorite of all. :)
Razgriz103 I was never against your opinion, I just shared my thought. :) I respect everyone choices and opinions ;)
Now really, the bes anime soundtrack I ever heard (still a difficult choice...)
I'll name 3:
BLUE SEED (this soundtrack totally OWNED me.)
VENUS WARS (Hey, it marked me a lot :P)
RUROUNI KENSHIN TV (this one marked even more, my childhood, my feelings, everything)
That's me. :)

I like some of the bleach openings and endings :D! I'm also a big fan of One Piece "share the world" along with all the FLCL songs. Full metal alchemist has a lot of good ones and ghost in the shell is just plain AWESOME! if you're someone who likes calming soft songs then i would reccomend the opening to Spice and Wolf (first season). I like all assortments of muic despite their genre or language so another good one (if you like opera time music) would be the beginning song to Elfen Lied. if you like strange unorthodox songs then you should listen to the beginning songs to Higurashi No Noku koro ni, (1st season)the beginning and ending songs to Resurrection Princess, Beginning songs to Soul Eater (first season). Another good one is the beginning song to "The Last Exile", Beginning song to "Devil may cry" and the beginning song to "To Love Ru". lol i know a few more but these are the most memorable

I've seen too many movies/series/OVA that I had excellent music. EVA,boogiepop phantom,Kaiba,Ghost in the shell,Jin Roh,Hokuto No Ken. Just too many to name. And I'm not talking about the intros/endings it's so stupid to base a show's music after just the intro/ending. I think they are only a small part of the overall soundtrack.
As as I said too many! Don't forget Naruto,Kikaider. That's not even a fraction of the list of shows with great soundtracks.

I think Star Driver had great music. Some of the instrumental only compositions were hit or miss, but they were strong hits when they made it. And of course, the vocal music (the maiden songs) are fabulous pieces of work.
Any anime that Shinkichi Mitsumune works on will have great music, if you ask me. Yoko Kanno and Yuki Kaijura also do beautiful work.
The music is Aria is very lovely, and while it doesn't really compare as far as composition or arrangement goes (or even just being outstanding), the music in Ojamajo Doremi is a lot of fun~.

Maybe you dont like the series (like me for ex. U^^) but the music is really wonderful, no doubt. And this make me think that sometimes we give away really good music only because we dont like that anime or series.
For example, i hate Omega... But its a fac too that it has very good BGM there (although many of them are resampling of the old Seiji works).. But the series... Argh.

Oh gosh; there are so many. Ghibli movies definitely have some of the prettiest music. And I have to say Evangelion because well- -that's my favorite.. (〃・・〃)
But other than that I have to say Cowboy Bebop, and Sakamichi no Apollon. Yoko Kanno made me fall in love with Jazz music♥

Some of my favorite songs are from naruto, although i also liked Kekkaishi. But I just finished Panty & Stocking with Garter Belt" and that music really stuck with me. Especially Fly Away as that's been stuck in my head long before I decided to watch it.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica has the best music. The score is composed by Yuki Kajiura - the lead singer in the group Kalafina.
Some songs use a language created by Kajiura, it's a mix between Japanese, English, Latin and other European languages.
Check out the music, it's awesome!!!!!
Opening: Connect - ClariS
Ending: Magia - Kalafina \ See You Tomorrow (Episode 1 - BD\DVD) \ And I'm Home (Episode 9 - BD\DVD)
Other good anime music:
One Piece
Full Moon wo Sagashite
Luck Star opening (catchy)
Roast Chicken

Takanori Arisawa - Digimon: Adventure, Adventure 02, Tamers and Frontier. No proofs for the haters, sorry.
Seiji Yokoyama - Saint Seiya (main series) and Chōriki Sentai Ohranger (not an anime but it's good).
Not an anime but its based on BSSM...
Michiru Ōshima - Pretty Guardian Sailormoon: Usagi No Tanoshii Ichinichi, Sailor Venus Ni Make Up, Princess No Heion Na Hibi.
The OST for the 2013 version must be PERFECT :O
The fake soundtrack... Mew Mew Power (not Tokyo Mew Mew):
The music is a lot better than the original: Corina's transformation and attak BGM.

Yuki Kajiura isn't a vocalist, but just the composer/arranger/programer/keyboardist.
Also, I'm not sure if you're aware or not already, but a majority of the vocal songs aren't Kajiura composed either. Connect is Sho Watanabe, Mata Ashita is hanawaya, and and I'm home is ryo (supercell).
Also also, nitpicking to the max, but Mata Ashita is used for the first 2 episodes of the series.

Actually, you're right and wrong. You right that I didn't point out Connect being used for episode 2, but ClariS did sing the song. Mata Ashita (See You Tomorrow) was sung by Aoi Yuuki (Madoka Kaname's voice actor), the song is only available on the DVD and Blu-ray releases - I know because I have the original TV broadcast recordings. The 2nd ending. And I'm Home, was sung by Ai Nonaka and Eri Kitamura (Kyouko Sakura and Sayaka Miki's voice actors).
Kajiura may not have sung that many songs for the show, but she has made up a language for singing - just listen to "Credens justitiam".
When I put the opening and endings up, i did not mean to make them seem as if they were made by 1 person. I just put them there so people who haven't seen the series could do a quick YouTube search on a song.
But I'm sorry for any confusion that may have occurred.

I'm just gonna assume this was a minor error, since I never said that.

I said composer, not vocalist.
and yes they were BD/DVD only. Not sure why this needed to be brought up though.
Kajiura may not have sung that many songs for the show
As far as I'm aware she hasn't sung any songs, and the vocals are instead handled by Kalafina's vocalists or some other outside source.
but she has made up a language for singing - just listen to "Credens justitiam".
or Kara no Kyoukai's entire discography
Either way, it's not much different from say Green Bird for Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack.

Your right that you didn't say "episode 2" like I said, but I went back and checked. And Mata Ashite is used in Ep 1 and 2.

I may have miss read what you posted. Kajuira is one of the singers in Kalafina - maybe not the lead singer, but a singer. But she did form the group Kalafina.
When I said "but she has made up a language for singing - just listen to "Credens justitiam", it's just that. If you listen to the song, the one that sounds like "salty o-la-e" or when Mami transforms, the song is in a mad-up language.
But you and I are both right, it's just a matter of how you look at things. Like Obi-Wan said "yes, from a certain point of view."

No, she is not.
Kalafina's current and past vocalists are Hikaru Masai, Keiko Kubota, Wakana Ootaki, and Maya Toyoshima; and FictionJunction's are Keiko Kubota, Wakana Ootaki, Kaori Oda, Yuriko Kaida, Yuuka Nanri, and Asuka Kato.
She's the composer, arranger, lyricist, etc, but she's never once been credited as a vocalist. Yes, Kalafina is her group, but she's never actually sung any of the songs.

I know, and I'm just saying Kara no Kyoukai's music has a lot of this as well.
p.s. if you don't know already, "lyrics" for Credens justitiam do exist

I listened to the music of Kyoukai, and i does have this mysterious language.
I have known for a while that "lyrics" for Credens justitiam exist. It's such a sad song when you read the lyrics, but when you listen to the song it all "YEAH! GO MAMI!" So sad.
If I'm correct, for the Madoka movies #1 and #2 Credens justitiam is sung in Japanese.

Just for the first movie, in the same infamous scene Credens justitiam is used for the TV series. I can't remember for sure, but I believe Credens justitiam was still used in other parts of the films. At least during Mami's debut and when Madoka and Mami save Homura in the first timeline.
Japanese version is titled as Mirai and was released on Kalafina's Hikari Furu single along with both film's ED themes.

I looked on YouTube and the only one i could find was a fandub of Mirai. It was awesome, the fan dubbers had good singing voices. And I like how the song has been extended from about 2 minutes to about 4 minutes.
I can't wait for the movies to be released on DVD and Blu-ray in America. Have you seen the movies?

I'm very picky with soundtracks and not many have a godly status, there are many masterpieces out there of course but, to my understanding the only animes that I would even consider to have "GODLY" soundtrack are:
1. Saint Seiya - Nothing will ever dethrone these soundtracks as the best anime soundtracks to ever exist. It is and has been the most beautiful symphonic and vocals I've heard in any anime to date. I don't know how many manly tears I've shed listening to Athena's Death from the 5th soundtrack.
2. Rurouni Kenshin - Beautiful music too - will touch your soul.
3. Eureka Seven - Beautiful soundtracks.. They are very sad and sentimental.

I really like the ao no exorcist soundtrack as well as k project. But it depends on what you're referring to when you say 'best'. If you mean prettiest then I think it would have to be sekaiichi hatsukoi but if you're talking about more cool sounding OSTs then I would say the first two that I mentioned.
