FFIX is my favourite one. That one had class, and went back to the roots of FF, which old school FF players, (like me) love.
Alot of the newbies in FF hate is cause they do not appreciate the roots of the FF series.

tbh, i dont know much about the roots of FF, but i do love IX, it was what got me started on FF, and the only other i consider to be as good as IX is X, i dont really bother that much with VII and i dont really understand what all the fanboy stuff is about and why s-e insist on milking VII for all its worth, but thats irrelevant to me...

IX RULES!! lol

IX is near the top of my list, just below FFX for my favorite in the series. I feel particularly close to IX right now, though, since I just finished it yesterday. (My save file, if anyone is interested, logged a good 52 hours -- my characters were at levels 75, 73, 72 and 71). I think it has one of the best endings of the series, as well. It also makes best use of FMVs (whereas X overuses them and the others didn't use them enough).

The plot is engaging, and the characters are deep and interesting. Where FFVII was very confusing with its characters, FFIX's make sense and feel legitimate. The only problem with having 8 characters is that four are out of your party at any given time and gain no experience, which is a bit cumbersome. Still, once you experience the emotions generated by them all, you won't mind. You'll even grow attached to Quina.

Aside from being engaging, the game also doesn't take itself too seriously. Through the main plotline is very serious and riddled with sadness and loss, there is an air of lightheartedness throughout the rest of it the really helps to show how versitile the writing was. The humor mixed with the seriousness also lends to the depth of Zidane... a depth that Cloud, with his stoic, unwavering atmosphere, lacked.

Gameplay, which is the heart of most any game, is nearly perfected in FFIX, although a lot of bosses seem to have insanely fast speed ratings. The exp system is welcome after VIII screwed that whole thing up and the ability system makes sense, even though at lv. 99 you still wouldn't be able to equip all the abilities you want. I'm also a rather big fan of the games with implicit character jobs (i.e. 1, 4, and 9, where a character is given a very distinct character class from the beggining and does not stray from it). I think VII and VIII were a little too heavy on the customization.

Oh, and it has one of my favorite soundtracks, and that's very important to me, too.

Overall, I think FFIX is highly underrated, and anyone here who hasn't played it should go out and do it.

You gotta remembed FFIX was released years ago. It's just old news to a lot of people so you can't expect there to be tonnes of traffic.

Yes, Alleuia was banned for repeatedly breaking rules after being asked not to.

Ah but FFVIII and FFVII were also released years ago, yet seemed to be more liked. And FFX is more liked as well. IX seems to be the odd one out, being the only un-futuristic FF game in a long time, and the new generation of players probably weren't used to it.

Andyuk
11-28-2005, 05:22 AM
Better still, give us a reason why you think it's crap.

I truly believe 9 is the closest any ps1 game has ever come to being perfect. The only slight niggles I have are that it is a little slow in battles and has an awfull framerate on the world map. Still those are hardware related mostly.

I think first of all I like it because I was slightly dissapointed with 8's way of doing things, And the first few hours of the game are so well put together, the characters are bright and look great (as low poly models too).

I really can't understand why people don't love this game. What is bad about this game, I can't think of anything.

I would read and post pretty frequently...that is, until it was clear how much fanboyism dominated the forums.

Most of the folks who I've heard say "FFIX is crap" (or something similar) are fanboy FFVII fans. Err...Sephiroth/Cloud fans. My bad.

I personally thing FFVII is at (or very near) the worst (yes, as in the opposite of best) FF. Granted, I haven't played, 2, 3, X-2, or XI, but of the rest, VII is probably the second worst-assuming Mystic Quest is considered a 'real' FF game. FFIX and VI are the two best-my opinion changes every couple weeks or so as to which one actually is best, so I usually just name them both.

IX and VI have certain similiarities that put them above the others. One-quality of story, mostly because of Two-characters. VI and IX, moreso than the other FF's (VIII comes close, though), develop each of the characters. FFVII, by contrast, only really develops Cloud and Aeris. And Aeris is gone for half the game, anyway. The rest of the cast is quite shallow, and very annoying at times. Moving on now to Three-humor. VI and IX have both have very...quirky...senses of humor. From Quina in IX to Mr. Thou in VI, among countless other things, these two games are funnier than the others. VII has a few cheap laughs from Cloud dressing in drag, and from Barret's vocabulary. (It's the #%#^#@ pizza!) Let's not even get into how much better FFIX's skill system is. Or the whole Jenova/Sephiroth mess (I've written about that at least twice on these boards).

While I'm at it, I'll take a shot at FFX. IX has better cutscenes. Period. The Bahamut/Alexander scene in IX is the second most memorable (first being the big stab in FFVII), and probably the most well done cutscene I've ever seen. Especiallly when you consider the limitations of the PSX. The only thing that might be almost as good in FFX is probably the opening movie, with Tidus playing Blitzball.

You edited your post in the second one :P

I pretty much agree with you...even with your opinion about FF7, although as well as MQ, i despise X-2 and hate online games (XI). Basically, the only reason it was adored back then, and i've said this before on this forum but it was a long time ago, was because the graphics and gameplay were such a change from FFVI and everyone loved the storyline and the smoothness of the game (FF1-6 all seemed to have little emotion and went too quick, well 1-5 more than 1-6 but still...). The only reason it is adored today is because all of the old gamers who adored it then are telling all the new gamers that it is the best and so it became a vicious trend.

If FFVIII came before VII, then i believe that right now it would be presumed to be the greatest of all time, but it happened that VII was made and is loved. You can't blame it...things like this happen with fanboys.

*spoilers*
And i agree about the cutscenes. I loved the silver dragons cutscene, kuja destroying terra, bahamut blowing up the fleet, odin destroying cleyra and a bunch more like the Bahamut Alexander fight as you said. Best game yet for cutscenes...and the number of cutscenes in FF games is declining...i think X-2 had like, 6 or 7 lol.
*end spoilers*

To think FFIX sucks is just to be unfamiliar with the old skool games where everything was as it should be. I think Square-Enix are trying to bring back the old stuff with XII, so we'll see how bad the fanboys are when that comes out.

To state it sucks, what else?

It Is like going at a cd shop with one of your friend and your friend tells you ''that cd sucks'' because of the band or because of the music, so therefor this person have some reasons to hate the cd, because of the band, artist, eventual the lyrics and the songs, it is like giving their own opinions at that cd like giving their criticism at FFIX.

So don't I like FFIX, because it looks corny, wacky and the characters looks like kids. But i like the the battle system and the soundtrack.

I agree to a degree with what's been said except that I love FFX-2, I have no problem with VII (I'm not a fanboy and I truly believe it's a good game, but I don't hang out in that section because, man...) and pretty much the only Final Fantasy game I played that I didn't really like was II (and I to a degree, because of the clunky battle system and not much of a plot.)

I really enjoyed FFIX to be honest and still think it`s one of the funniest and freshest RPGs i have played to this day. Although it does comes across that the majority that don`t enjoy FFIX are, well, not at an age to appreciate it enough. It may not be as in your face than FFVII/FFVIII but the it still holds the charm and playability that any other great FF has.

I'm about where Agent is in terms of FFVII: too moderate to be in the FFVII forum. And although the details mentioned about FFI are but the tip of the iceberg of bad things about it, I still love it (I don't really know why).

Anyway, I absolutely adored FFIX. I think it does one of the best jobs of characterization out of all the games. The great thing about Zidane was that he wasn't perfect, but he was still a loveable hero. His obsession with females and frequent attempts at womanizing was a bit of a character flaw, but it's one of those flaws you love in a character. I know many people ran afoul of him/her, but I thought Quina was absolutely hiilarious. Vivi was great as a little child with possibly a bigger understanding of life than the rest, simply because of his shortened life span. Steiner was perfect as the rigid Captain of the Knights of Pluto, who had strong prejudice against Zidane for his thieving background but still recognized his virtue. Kuja was a great villain, and I actually liked how in the end *SPOILER WARNING* he turns good and saves the party, and I thought it was well-thought out. It made sense to me that Kuja would make one final attempt to destroy everything and then finally realize his folly in the end. I don't know why so many people thought the ending was dumb.*END SPOILER WARNING*

If you look at the concept and premise of the game, FFIX is better than FF7 or FF8. FFIX was a true FF game. I don't like that Si Fi and futuristic stuff FF7 and FF8 had, and also FF10. I did enjoyed those games a lot, especially FF8, very emotional. I liked that warm happy feeling FFIX had, Alexandria was a happy place for me.

also VII gets a lot of attention because of it's intracacies, it has so many things to discuss, espiecally the symbolism in a lot of the stuff (like the fallen angel, Sephiroth)

and VIII just re-arranged everything that was games, at least at that time, because, THERE IS NO MP!!
