Final Fantasy 6 in japan was released in the U.S. as Final Fantasy 3 because they only released 1 & 4 as 1 & 2. But in japan and coming soon to a nintendo hand held is the original Final Fantasy 3.

Point being, FF6 was released in America as FF3, but there is a Japanese FF3 that was never released in America. So, in a way, FF6 and FF3 are the same game. In America, that is. In Japan, they're not.

Gee, this is confusing...

Nintendo Famicom / Nintendo Entertainment System.
-------------
back in the olden days, Square came out with a game called FINAL FANTASY in Japan.

FINAL FANTASY was later released in the U.S.

Then FINAL FANTASY II was released in Japan.

But FINAL FANTASY II didn't quite make it state side.

Ditto with FINAL FANTASY III

Super Famicom / Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
-------------
Then FINAL FANTASY IV was released.

Was later released in the U.S., however since we never got part 2 and 3, they just renamed 4 part 2

FINAL FANTASY V ....ditto again.

Once again now we have FINAL FANTASY VI

Because we also didn't get part 5, when 6 was released in the U.S., it was renamed part 3.

So to review. we got 1, 4 and 6 but as 1, 2 and 3.

~Fin~

or we can just say it like this...

Japan / United States

Final Fantasy / Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II /
Final Fantasy III /
Final Fantasy IV / Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy V /
Final Fantasy VI / Final Fantasy III

As a matter of fact, you have played FF6 but not FF3. FF6 is the one with Terra, Locke, Sabin, and other such characters. FF3 is the one that I haven't played.

Final Fantasy 2, 3, 4 and 6 are often the most confused Final Fantasy games because of how they were numbered when they were released. People often give them the suffix of j or u (i.e. ff2u, ff3j etc)

But here's the facts: Every single Final Fantasy (except for FF3j) has been released in the US. Therefore, it is improper to call them by their US SNES Numbers. Example, if you mention FF2 and you really mean FF4, we're gonna think you're saying FF2 because FF2 was released in the US.

Confusing? Yes it is!

So to sum this up really fast...

Final Fantasy (1) was released in the US and JP as Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy 2 was released in Japan and did not make it to the US until Final Fantasy Origins came out.
Final Fantasy 3 was released in Japan and has not made it to the US at all. It will be released on the Nintendo DS however.
Final Fantasy 4 was released in Japan but since the US did not get 2 or 3 yet, they decided to rename it Final Fantasy 2 for the US. This would be corrected when the release of Final Fantasy 4 in Final Fantasy Chronicles.
Final Fantasy 5 was released in Japan but would not see a US release until Final Fantasy Anthology.
Final Fantasy 6 was released in Japan and since 5 didn't come out and it being the 3rd final fantasy released in the US at the time, it was renamed Final Fantasy 3. This was corrected when it was re-released in Final Fantasy Anthology.
Every Final Fantasy game after 6 was numbered correctly.

Do yourself a favor... don't refer Final Fantasy 4 as "Final Fantasy 2 US" or anything like that, it just makes you sound retarded and less of a Final Fantasy fan.

^^ mogknight, you seem to be the only other person around here who understands the full line-up.

Edit: I took it apon myself to explain everything without having to do so much reading. I googled a few pics and with the magic of the most high-tech art programs known to man - MS Paint, I came up with this...

I don't know why they'll release 3 on the DS though. It's a bad game... For those of you who haven't played it, you're not missing anything.

I would wonder why you would ever want to release it on the DS when it is suppose to be real bad and it may not even sell that well. For me im not getting it mainly because i dont take much interest in the classics (only Chrono Trigger), and i dont have a DS.

Agreed!

Of course, if you want to be really cool and sound like you know everything, you can say "FFIV Easytype" when referring to the US SNES release, as opposed to Hardtype (never say Hardtype after FFIV... I've never seen it done), which was released in Japan (Super Famicom) and in FF Chronicles. That's right, Square decided that FFIV as it was released in Japan was too hard for US gamers and decided to tone it down. Some enemies became easier, and every character lost a special ability for the US SNES release.

That reason, by the way, is also why FFV never made it to Ameircan shores for the SNES. They didn't think US gamers could handle FFV's complexity. After playing it for a bit, though, I'm not sure if I disagree >.<

FF3 was the first game to introduce a job system that would be used again in FF5, Tactics, and FFXI. Though honestly, I never really played FF3 to give a fair accessment of it but porting FF3 on the DS? They wouldn't really do that if it was a bad game.

i had the same confusion once... but now i know. it is called FF3 in the U.S. cause it was the 3rd FF game to come and it's FF6 in Japan because it was the 6th FF game made and released. i think thats right...

To keep the confusion going, Final fantasy 3 has still not been rereleased/ported since the NES original. (I think)

Since i live in the UK there was never any confusion, as we got FF7 first AS FF7 and then all the rest (bar 3) later on again with the japanese numbers, Good thing squaresoft kept the correct numbers for us or there would be tons more of these topics.

Yeah, FFIII introduced the Jobs system, although many people associate that with V because it was a lot more fully-featured in that one.

Again, if you've played the one with those characters, it's VI you've played. Doesn't matter what it says about it being III, that just means "III U.S."
