I prefer female vocals, but they're not required. just suggest some please ! uploads are appreciated but not required.
some things I've thought of already:
Tori Amos - '97 Bonnie and Clyde
Nick Cave & PJ Harvey - Henry Lee
Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue - Where The Wild Roses Go
Violent Femmes - Country Death Song
Neko Case - Make Your Bed
Nellie Mckay- Ding Dong
similar to Sarah's question, does anyone remember the really upbeat and poppy 80s song about... someone abusing their wife or something?

Richard Marx - Hazard. Okay sure, she (the woman in the song) only disappeared, but he was accused of her murder, and which pretty much destroyed his life, making the song very depressing listening indeed...
How about Metallica's Fade to Black? It's one of the most depressing songs that I've heard (after Nick Cave's songs of course).

just because a song is depressing doesn't mean it's a murder ballad guys :-(
Bloodbath at Burger King is not depressing. It is an anthem to the downtrodden worker. It is about freedom and liberation and killing annoying people where you work. It is about...
Blood on the register, the grill, and on the floor.
Blood on the fryer, and the walk-in cooler door.

Look Sarah, it's about murder, okay. MURDER BALLAD. Stop trying to invalidate my opinions. ;_;

I can't remember the name, but I'm pretty sure it is a Suzanne Vega song!
Also: Country Death Song is great. The only version I have is the live version off the Add it Up album, so if you have another one, send please!

yeah, a non-live version is on the Hallowed Ground cd. I can send it when you get on irc
Wot? Suzanne Vega song? I don't recall this. AND I WOULD KNOW. Probably maybe sort of. I guess maybe I wouldn't remember.
It's definitely not any of the ones I have though.

Marilyn Manson's Long Hard Road Out Of Hell may work, I'm not sure if it's about suicide though. I've given up trying to interpret his lyrics (apart from the obvious ones, ie. babble-babble-bitch-bitch etc. crap).

How about;
Silverchair - Suicidal dreams
Ozzy Osbourne - Suicide Solution
Marilyn manson - the reflecting god
Those are all songs that are very distinctly singing about suicide.. Except 'the reflecting god'. That's harder to tell what its about but it has caused many suicides.
Alot of nirvana songs can get a little depressing at times but none that i've heard have really seemed to promote suicide.

Suicide is Painless is pretty great, even though Nick Drake is not a female.
It's fun to know all the words and to sing it when MASH comes on.

Marilyn manson - In the shadow of the valley of death

Ah! That must be it. It's funny, it was so long ago I last heard that song, and it never occurred to me then it was about abuse even though it's kind of obvious now.
That was a really great song though.
My favorite Suzanne Vega song is In Liverpool and I am now going to go post that in the song sharing thread so go there and get it.
