I would like to know your opinion about the saddest song in all ff history. mine is in ffx; ending theme. When tidus realises that he is vanishing, he looks is hands and then looks yuna. and you know..

For me, a toss between Forever Rachel and Celes Theme, both from FFVI. But I guess the later would win, mainly due to it's use in the scene halfway through the game where Celes attempts to commit suicide on the Solitary Island following Cid's death. The melancholy notes really tugs on the heart strings as Celes. overcome with grief, loneliness, and despair, throws herself off a cliff. Heavy stuff..

Opening Theme from FFXI would also qualify, mainly towards the end of the opening FMV, when Tavnazia finally falls to the Beastmen, as Aldo - a dirty and ragged child - wanders tramuatised and bewildered through the ruins of his former hometown; the deep piano chords and bass vocalists tolling away relentlessly in the background. A powerful scene that really makes my eyes start to water..

Aeris' theme from FF7. The orchestral version. God it makes me cry.

Here's a couple that haven't been written. "Off The Edge Of Despair" and "Desert Prison" in FFVII are really sad. The Prison music makes you pity the prisoners. "Coin Song" and "Forever Rachel" from FFVI are great, as well as "Epitath." (sp?)

The most saddest sings for me would have to either be:
Suteki Da Ne (FFX)
Aeris' Theme (FFVII)
Eyes On Me (FFVIII)
Love Grows (FFVIII)

While Suteki Da Ne and Aeris' Theme are the two most popular ones here, am I the only one that mentioned Eyes on Me from FFVIII? Although it didn't have any death scene while it was playing, it was sad for me listening to it in the ending while watching Laguna remembering Raine for one last time, knowing how their relationship ended in tragedy. But maybe it's just me, since I really liked Laguna's story in FFVIII. Love Grows is a slower instrumental version of Eyes On Me.

Yeah the piano version was sad aswell. In fact, I find all the versions of Eye On Me emotional since they always relate to Laguna's story.

Saddest songs for me are "Coin Song" from the FFVI Piano Collections (its OST counterpart is the song played as Setzer is recounting his memories of Daryl [sp?]), and "Small Two of Pieces" from the Xenogears soundtrack. There's a prettified piano version of the latter, too. :)

So as the mass group concurs, "Aeris' theme" is most definitely the saddest, music for Final Fantasy that anyone of us has listened to. I'm listening to it right now as a matter of fact, and you can well imagine the tears being fought back.
Though it's true Aeris was not everyone's favorite player, she was a great character. And when it comes right down to it, that's all that really matters.

I'd say Drifting from FFVIII.

Undisputably the Ending Theme of Final Fantasy X, regardless of whether people think it's the best or worst game in the FF series, it had the most emotional ending to date, and a big part of that is the music. Especially when the song gets to the part in which Yuna runs towards Tidus and just passes through him and falls down with a tear running down her eye. That part always gets to me.

Now, I know the topic said "Final Fantasy Song", but as a Silent Hill fan I feel it's my duty to mention "Not Tomorrow" from Silent Hill 1, which is the tune you hear in the scene in which Lisa dies; anybody who has played Silent Hill 1 will remember that scene clearly and the music just hits home so perfectly you just want to reach into the TV and help Lisa. :(

Maybe its just me, but the "Final Fantasy Theme"(orchestrated of course) does it for me. None of those FF9/10 songs make me sad in the least, nor does Aeris' theme. Celes' opera song(don't remember the name of it) is also up there on my list, and "Sending a dream into the universe" from VII.

By the end of the game your emotions have already been pushed to the limit, then when the credits roll this beautiful song plays and is followed by one of the most ambitious, sad, cliffhanger endings ever written for a game.

I remember playing this game. It's really not far into the game at all, probably 2 hours into the game. I just remember the strategy guide saying "What the credits are rolling? this is by far the shortest and saddest RPG I have ever played in my life! But don't be discouraged, it's kinda the opening of the game, you still got like 40 hours to go!"

Ok for me there's three that come to mind.

1. Aeris Death Theme - Played it when it was released couldn't beleive how good it was/is.

2. Metal Gear Solid - theme song " the best is yet to come". In a word EPIC!
