Anne-Sophie Mutter obviously had fun making this disc. In the quiet pieces (Massenet, Ysa�e, Faur�) which serve as interludes, she plays with her usual exquisite taste. In the showpieces, though, she goes to town, sliding, scooping, exaggerating, & letting all the stops out. The gypsy inflection she uses in Ravel�s Tzigane & Sarasate�s Zigeunerweisen is delicious. Even a ridiculous orchestral arrangement of Tartini�s Devil�s Trill Sonata is more amusing than offensive. With James Levine & the Berlin Philharmonic providing uncommonly alert & powerful support, & Deutsche Grammophon�s realistic sound, this disc is a real treat for violin lovers.

“Performing contemporary music had added immeasurably to the way I play Tchaikovsky’s Concerto,” writes violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter in the liner notes to her 2nd recording of the work in 20 years. To be more precise, what performing contemporary music has added to Mutter’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s concerto is an abrasive tone, an aggressive technique, & an interpretation that treats Tchaikovsky’s tender little concerto as if it were a lover who liked it rough & raw. Although there is no denying Mutter’s virtuosity, her performance is at best willful & at worst wrongful.
“Anne-Sophie makes the structure of Korngold’s piece clearer than anyone else,” writes conductor Andr� Previn in the liner notes of his wife’s performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto. To be more precise, it is Previn who makes the structure clearer, who, indeed, makes this the most persuasive performance of the piece ever recorded. An old hand at the music of Korngold, Previn’s sensitive conducting shapes an ardent but cogent performance, a performance that lets Korngold’s lines sing & soar but always in context of a convincing structure. Mutter, who thankfully has not added any hint of “contemporary music” to Korngold’s neo-Romantic piece, plays with all the subtlety, taste, & beauty of which she is capable. The result is one of the most completely compelling performances of the work ever recorded. Deutsche Grammophon’s sound is transparent with a slight hint of reverberation

Don't let the "PCM" source scare you. The booklet says the original recording was 96k/24-bit, and it sounds hi-rez all the way. The dynamics, especially in the pianissimo end of the scale, are amazing. The violin sounds warm and blends into the sonic landscape of the orchestra better than some other works I've heard on "all DSD" recordings. If you're not familiar with this particular Beethoven piece, it has a rather "modern" 5-note motif that is initially startling, sounding (to my untrained ear) out-of-place in a romantic work. But the as the composer returns to this phrase, he weaves it into the fabric of the concerto so masterfully that by the end of the first movement, it becomes beautiful and comforting. So much for my amateur music criticism.
The two "Romances" are short pieces that are more traditional, and easier to like on first hearing.
As for Mutter's playing, perhaps ignorance on my part is bliss. Her rubato doesn't bother me, although there are a couple of places that I do wish she had called less attention to herself and let the music sing. Overall, a very satisfying listening experience.

Very enjoyable performance, the piano and violin are equally balanced, they interplay with identical or opposing melodies, there is sometimes romance, sometimes drama: it's all very well done. The surround mix is correct, the sound is airy and true, the instruments come into the living room, but there is some loss of focus between the 3 front speakers at times (the sonic position of the instruments can sometimes change unexpectedly). stereo track is fine (it's easier to record!)

The subtitle of this SACD is "The Ultimate Audio Experience". But open the notes, and you discover that all the tracks save one are from 44, 48, and 96KHz PCM sample original sources. There are some great performances here –- forever trapped in mid-definition resolution. They date from 1993 to 2003, a surprising number of them being recorded in 2001-2003, after DSD recording was available. In listening to this SACD, I was beginning to have doubts about the SACD format until I noticed the sources in the liner notes.
The one DSD recording here is the Dvorak Slavonic Dance op. 71 #1 with Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra Dvor�k: The Slavonic Dances [SACD]. My reference is Reiner's performance Dvorak: Slavonic Dances & Brahms: Hungarian Dances / Fritz Reiner Conducting The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and I would have to say that I prefer Fischer's performance, which has tremendous nuance and exuberance.
