maybe i just beat it fast, but it seemed like FFIX used more discs that it should've. my bro said that if they could've made it on less dics they would've cuz it'd've costed them a lot less. but i still think they could've shrunk it to 3 discs, what do you say?

Well, the FMV takes up a lot, hence, three cds.

yeah, the last disc wasn't very long, and neither was the 1st really. they could've put it on 3 discs instead of 4
There's a big difference between CDs and DVDs, guys. A CD holds far less information, so a PlayStation game would naturally have more discs than a PS2 game of comparable length.
As for the disc space, FMVs consume quite a lot of it. A disc with more videos will not be able to carry the story as far as a disc with less.

That's right, and remember that in any disc most of the game information has to be loaded at least once per disc, and the battle program, menu program and all of those thing (Of course the fmv are the most important thing)

the reason i thik they have 4 discs, is the videos. It probley takes up a lot of the disc, the vidoes are prety amazing.

Yeah, with all the videos, music and information that needs to be in the game would take up 4 discs as it will take up a lot of MBs. They were only able to get FFX on one disc is because they started using DVD discs which are equal to about 8 CD discs that were used for FFIX
I already answered the question pretty definitively. You guys are just repeating what's already been said. :(

but besides, it's not like it's a problem that FF VIII and FF IX used 4 disks is it ?!

A lot of the game is found on each disk, the character models, background and music are all found on each cd, That leaves less room for speech and events per cd, you dont get 700mb of new memory on each disk.
Also i'd say there is more detail in the character models and extra text (pressing select in menu's for help) and such so you go through each disk quicker than ff7 and ff8. also you would need a 4th cd even if the game went over the thrid by a few mb.
cd's are dirt cheap anyway, this came out in 2001? cds were cheap the make back then.

let's calculate.
disc one uses 615mb of 700mb
disc two uses 572mb of 700mb
disc three uses 605mb of 700mb
disc four uses 571mb of 700mb
615+572+605+571= 2563mb total
3 discs=2100mb
So I think that concludes that thread. ff9 couln't stand on 3 discs.

well then i have a new point! in ff12 whenevr that is rekleased - the graphics will be undoubtedly awesome beyond imagination BUT!!! will this mean that the game will be shorter???????

No, once again Dvd hold a lot more tha cd's
cd 700 mb
dvd 5000 mb
and FF12 is supposed to use less polygons than FFX (around half) thus less detail.
I doubt it would be shorter, we would feel short changed if it was shorter.

a dvd can hold 8 gb if it's double layered. So...
