A Summer Place is a 1959 romantic drama film based on Sloan Wilson's 1958 novel of the same name, about teenage lovers from different social classes who get back together twenty years later, and then must deal with the passionate love affair of their own teenage children by previous marriages. Delmer Daves directed the movie, which stars Richard Egan and Dorothy McGuire as the middle-aged lovers, and Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee as their children. October, 22nd 2019 marks the 60th anniversary of the movie world release in New York City.
The film contains a memorable instrumental theme composed by Max Steiner and was a big hit when Percy Faith recorded it for an album, which spent nine weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1960. Faith played it pretty straight, staying close to the arrangement of the theme that Steiner prepared for several cues, such as "Bright Dreams / The Garden". (SOURCE 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Summer_Place_(film))) (SOURCE 2 (http://www.gutbrain.com/past/201107.html))
The actual "Main Title" is masterpiece of film scoring in the style of the Golden Age of Hollywood, touching on several different moods and figures in the smoothest way imaginable. John Barry's theme for Somewhere in Time (1980) sounds rather similar to the "Main Title" for A Summer Place. (SOURCE 2 (http://www.gutbrain.com/past/201107.html))
The theme resurfaces in several of the cuesno surprise there. But this is one of Steiner's greatest scores, mining seemingly inexhaustible veins of romance, drama, suspense and lightheartedness. Each cue is almost like a miniature symphony, and Steiner's use of orchestral color is inspiring. (SOURCE 2 (http://www.gutbrain.com/past/201107.html))
