A little something I've been trying to collect for the past several years. This consists of the two official recordings that were made. The first being the official soundtrack that was commercially released, which I owned, and the second being the demos and sessions recording that was never commercially released (http://castalbums.org/recordings/Yentl-1983-Demos-and-Recording-Studio-Outtakes/9967). It has been floating around in certain circles and I was finally able to get a hold of it. The quality on discs two through four isn't astounding, but it's the best that appears to be available.
Notes on the Film (from The Barbra Streisand Archives)
In Phil Ramone's excellent book, Making Records: The Scenes Behind the Music, he described the technically difficult job of putting together the Yentl soundtrack for film and record. In a nutshell, Streisand wanted to utilize new Sony 24-track digital recorder. However, they had already recorded the score on tape (a.k.a. analog). Streisand requested that Legrand's Yentl score be rerecorded on digital tape, with Legrand conducting to Barbra's already recorded analog vocals.
“Engineering-wise I'd never seen anything like it,” Jim Boyer (audio remixer) expalined in Ramone's book. “We were distilling both analog and digital media to a single analog master—for film and record.
“I was blown away by Barbra's memory; we had dozens of tapes, and she could remember specific words and phrases that she wanted from each in the final take. It was awesome—scary, really. When we matched the vocals to the printed music score, the unfolded vocal take sheet was the size of the console. This was before automation—if you didn't write it down, it didn't get remembered. It was the beginning of the digital age and Barbra, Phil, and Columbia Records wanted to be in on it.”
The Yentl soundtrack was remixed at Lion Share Studios in Hollywood. Streisand spent the evenings working on the album mix, following a full day of mixing the film soundtrack in Culver City, California.
UPDATE
A couple days after posting this, I was approached by SonicAdventure (http://forums.ffshrine.org/member.php?u=488241) about a REMASTERED version of the original soundtrack that he had done. He asked about possibly incorporating it into this release and I was thrilled to say yes! It has now been switched in for Disc One on this release, making a fully unique experience of Yentl. Anyone who has previously received a link can use it to download the remastered disc, and all new download requests will include it.
"I hope you like the sound. I did it last after I experimented with vinyl. I own this one on vinyl too and I was wondering if I could copy the sound of the vinyl for this one when the source was my digital CD. The vinyl sounded better because of the different mastering (or perhaps because it was done in full anticipation of vinyls flaws). Anyway, I went beyond that and I like the result. It's the best I can come up with... though a new mix from the original elements would surely help." - Sonic Adventure
I find it provides a much richer sounding version of the album with more depth and texture in the arrangements than the original release. It might be the best we will get without a complete restoration from the original elements. Please leave him some reputation if you can! I have also included a copy of the End Titles ripped directly from the film as a bonus track.
