Welcome to what I hope will be another annual knockout game arranged by yours truly! I usually post an annual Favourite FF Character Knockout Game and I thought I'd do another one. I did actually do this originally in 2011 for one year, you can find that thread here - Thread 96381

But now let's hope we can do this annually! I have 129 locations from Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy XV, and Final Fantasy Tactics all meshed in and spat out to form battles. What will be considered to being the forum's favourite Final Fantasy location?

We have 8 locations in each game apart from FF8, which has 9 locations. Why? Because the original winner of this game was FF8's Ultimecia's Castle, so I decided to give them an additional entry.

The Rules
1. To vote, simply check what location is going against another location and reply with your favourite location in each roundup, preferably in a column format.
2. When a round finishes, if there are any tiebreakers, I'll post them up at the end. Tiebreakers are to be decided by listing them, and asking the question again about what location is their favourite, the first response wins the tiebreak (eg. if the tiebreaker was Midgar vs Zanarkand, and the first poster to respond chooses Zanarkand, Zanarkand goes through to the next round).
3. All these battles are chosen randomly, I've used a simple Excel spreadsheet and the "Rand" formula to help me make it fair and square. The only exceptions I've made is that there's no two locations from the same game going against eachother. I'm going to try and keep locations from the same games apart for as long as possible, although that may get difficult later.
4. I'll keep these rounds open for around a week before posting the next one.
5. Because Round 1 has 64 battles, I'll split it into four sections (so you'll see 16 battles today, 16 in the next update etc). Round 2 will have 32 battles and I'll split that into two sections. Round 3 onwards will be posted in the complete forms.
6. Don't take this seriously, it's just a bit of fun. By all means debate why you love or hate certain locations , just be respectful of others feelings of those same locations.

I've incorporated pictures in this, although it was difficult for some locations, and some of the pictures aren't of good quality. By all means if you can find a better picture than the ones presented, let me know and I'll definitely swap them.

I used to pronounce it Lifa Tree until I realized that all places were capitalized, making it a capital i and not a lower case L. Now I pronounce it ee-fah tree. Good to know I'm correct the second time around lol

Most Popular Games - This isn't something I do anymore in the Characters Knockout game due to the lack of balance but we can do it on this game... for now. Anyway, FF6 leads the way with a combined tally of 49 points followed by FF8 with 44 (that being said FF8 do have one additional character in the game) and then FF9 with 41 points.
Least Popular Games - FF Tactics and FF11 have already have left the game! It's a shame, but they both take the wooden spoon together by taking a total of 8 points each.
Games on the Edge - FF5 has one character remaining left, and their characters have created a total tally of 19 points. FF1 have two characters left, having got 18 points, and FF2 also have two characters left having got 16 points.

Most Popular Locations - Zozo from FF6 has now taken the lead in the game, with 24 points. Tied in 2nd place with 22 points are FF6's Figaro Castle, FF7's Cosmo Canyon and Midgar.
Most Popular Games - It's pretty obvious that FF6 is this year's winner in terms of most points tally, they've got a total of 131 so far and still have 4 characters left in the game, taking half the spots of the Quarter Finals! FF7 are in second place with 103 points and FF8 have 98 points.
Games on the Edge - We say goodbye to FF4 and FF15, as Tower of Zot have both been eliminated. Only 4 games remain. FF8 have to depend on Deling City to get through to the semis and FF9 only have one entry left with Treno so they're probably closest to being knocked out now.

In Round 3 we lost Ultimecia's Castle, who won the game back in 2011. In Round 4 we lost Black Mage Village, who was the runner up back in 2011. So we'll officially have two new finalists!

- None of these locations made it to the Semi Finals back in 2011.
- There are only two games remaining, FF6 and FF7. My ruling is that, where possible, I avoid entries from the same game to go against each other unless I have to.
- As obvious as it may seem, but we may get an all-round FF6 final or an all-round FF7 final!

Wow. Both are game-defining settings. Both have a culture and spirit that's beautifully evoked in the architecture, NPCs, colors, layout, music. Both are pivotal to their game's events. Both are cinematically introduced in unforgettable fashion.

For me, it comes down to the experience of being there. The experience of playing through the Narshe sections of FFVI was always joyful for me. Midgar is (somewhat intentionally) a holding pen to escape from, and I couldn't wait to get out of there and hoped to never go back.

Good lord, this blows. What a tough decision. That 3D render of Narshe made me laugh way too hard, btw. Still love Narshe though, don't get me wrong! But, duty calls.

I get that Midgar was a holding pen, yeah. The difference was just that I had no desire to get out of it. I enjoy cyberpunk/steampunk more than traditional fantasy, and Midgar and Narshe both capture those aesthetics well. Midgar was just a whole world of it, whereas Narshe had a huge impact on setting the tone but doesn't comprise a significant chunk of the gameplay.

Just out of interest, what's everyone thoughts on Midgar being considered as one location? Would you have rather had multiple segregated parts under consideration, such as Wall Mart, Train Graveyard and Shinra Headquarters?

I don't think they're different enough in aesthetic, function, or likability to separate them. But that's just me.

To be fair, considering how much of the game you spend under Midgar's roof (and at times above it), I suppose it's apt to consider it many locations in one. I was just considering it as one cohesive world map locale.

I recall thinking, back in '97 on my first playthrough, that Midgar comprised the entire game. Imagine my surprise when I arrived on the world map and realised I had only seen the first stop on my journey. If it were up to me, I'd have done it up like Esthar in FFVIII and given it proportional scale on the world map, but allowed the player to enter each sector individually via the map. I'd say, with as eventful and varied as Midgar is, it would have served to divvie it up as such. But, they didn't seek my advice beforehand.

Perhaps in the upcoming remake (likely landing on shelves sometime in 2030) we'll see something more to this degree. Who knows at this point.

I agree with Arthur. I feel like if we separate it, it would become too diluted. It's like splitting up the different sections of Lindblum, and having before and after locations for the city. It just creates too much.

Midgar is definitely a single entity in my mind. You've got this vast middle class city that you barely catch a glimpse of all game above you, and it feels luxurious but dark and sinister. Meanwhile you're down in the gutter trying to press on, and while it might be dilapidated and rough around the edges, there's something warm about it. It's the contrast that makes the city as a whole so enticing to me.
