Performed by various artists and originally released in 1969, Easy Rider is one of rock's most notorious soundtracks. The album became famous for containing one of the greatest anthems in rock history, the landmark "Born to Be Wild," performed by Steppenwolf. Only this track would have made the album fundamental, but it also contains songs by Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Roger McGuinn and Electric Prunes.
The Band's original version of "The Weight" was used in the movie score but, for contractual issues, in the 1969 soundtrack album an interesting cover by the group Smith replaced it.
This Deluxe edition, issued in 2004, contains a CD with the same 10 tracks as the original LP, and then adds a second disc with an assortment of classic rock from the psychedelic era, among them the original "The Weight" and the Byrds' cover of "You Ain't Going Nowhere" from the Basement Tapes. None of the 19 tracks on disc 2, except "The Weight," were used in Easy Rider.
