Fishing Diary (aka "Tsuribaka Nisshi" or "Diary of a Fishing Fool") was a series of 22 live-action movies that followed the adventures of a company employee whose sole pleasure in life was to go fishing. If you'd like more info on the series and its various composers, please see Spoiler #2.
Although this super-rare recording is titled "Fishing Diary 12", it also contains music from the 2 movies that preceded it: "Fishing Diary 11" (music by Yoshikazu Suo) and the “Samurai Special” (music by Kaoru Wada) which was released between Diary 10 & 11 in 1999.
Each movie was filmed as a page in a diary, and each one had its own story that revolved around a bored office worker (“Hama-chan”) whose passion for fishing leads him into all sorts of comic and romantic situations. In "Fishing Diary 12" (“Biggest Vacation Ever”) Hama-chan is jealous that another company employee has retired in order to spend endless days fishing, and he conspires to join his co-worker though he has no vacation time left. Oshima’s music is on the light side, with a charming Leroy Anderson-ish title tune and a lush, sweeping ballad. It closes with a salsa vocal. The music for "Fishing Diary 11" is more spare, with some funk/Caribbean/country touches. The "Samurai Special" is still a comic story about fishing, but set in Japan’s Edo period. The score is not without some charm, and features instruments from the period.

Fishing Diary ("Tsuribaka Nisshi") started out as manga whose popularity led to a series of 20 live-action movies based on the same characters and setting. There were also 2 special movies, bringing the total to 22 (one movie each year from 1988 to 2009). The popularity of the first 22 movies spawned a 36-episode animated series for TV and in 2015 Fishing Diary returned as a live-action TV series for 2 seasons.
Several different composers worked on original 22 movies: Tetsuro Kashibuchi scored 7, Kazuo Shinoda scored 6, while the other composers scored 1 each: Kazunori Maruyama, Toshio Nakanishi, Masaru Sato, Kaoru Wada, Yoshikazu Suo, Tetsuji Hayashi, Tari Iwashiro, Joe Hisaishi, and Michiru Oshima.
In 1994, “Tsuribaka Nisshi” Volumes 1, 2 & 3 were released on 3 individual CDs*, with score excerpts from Fishing Diaries 1-6. In 2007 a 2-disc “Tsuribaka Nisshi 20th Special Anniversary” set was released covering the music up to Fishing Diary 18. I was able to listen to this and did not care for most of the excerpts, so do not own it (it shows up on eBay occasionally). The early tracks are mono, including the 9 Hisaishi composed for Fishing Diary 2. Some music by Masaru Satoh for Fishing Diary 4 appear on the compilation Film Music of Masaru Satoh Vol 5. Discographies for the other composers list the movie, but don’t show that any soundtrack was ever released. The 2 excerpts by Oshima on the 20th Anniversary set sounded very nice and set me off on a hunt to see if there was more. To my surprise there was a CD released (the one you are now looking at) and it seems to be the only one from the series, apart from the compilations mentioned. It took me years to find it, although I was surprised it also included music from 2 other Diaries.
