CENTENNIAL (1978 Mini-Series) John Addison – 5 HOURS OF SCORE – NOT A DVD RIP [FLAC]

It’s amazing what’s out there in the hands of private collectors. I was recently trading scores with someone, and he mentioned he had John Addison’s music for the “Centennial” mini-series. I thought he meant one CDR of highlights, but it turned out he had the complete scores for the first 9 episodes, on cassettes given to him by the composer in the early 1980s. (The last 3 episodes are missing, but that isn’t too painful since most of that music is derived from themes already established in earlier episodes.)

The collector had transferred the music for himself onto three separate sources:
• Cassette back-ups, with all the slate numbers and studio chatter intact.
• CDR copies of those cassettes
• A 4-CDR set of highlights with slates and chatter removed.

I was sent all of this material, with the understanding that I would make the score freely available, since it’s unlikely it will ever get an official release (the entire 12 episodes would take up at least 6 CDs, an expensive proposition for any label). I’ve been slowly working my way through it all – 15 hours in total – to find the best sounding versions (each source sounds slightly different, with their own unique pros and cons). Rather than wait until I’ve finished the whole thing, I thought I would post each individual episode score as I go along.

Sound quality: it’s all mono, but reasonably full and dynamic. Since this music is from an early 1980s tape source, don’t expect state-of-the-art sound, but don’t expect it to be terrible either.

The music: well, I love it. I wouldn’t take on this amount of work if I didn’t. I saw the original series back in 1979, but I didn’t appreciate just how intelligently crafted Addison’s music was. I think it might be his best work. It’s melodically rich, with a theme for virtually every major character. If you’ve seen the series you will remember that one majestic piece of music that appears in virtually every episode, a cue I’ve called “The Land.” The action music is also very memorable, and it gets more than one workout during the 12 episodes.

I’m kicking off with the series opener, “Only The Rocks Live Forever,” which was longer than other episodes. Most have about 30 minutes of score, but the opener has over an hour.

Also, very glad I’m not alone in thinking Centennial is a fascinating and very well made miniseries despite the passage of time. IMO some of Timothy Dalton’s best work, and he’s just one somewhat minor piece in a phenomenal ensemble.

If you’re familiar with the series you’ll remember how its tone changes as the narrative progresses. This gives Addison a lot of scope for writing in different styles, starting with the adventurous Pasquinel/McKeag material, continuing that freewheeling spirit with the Levi Zendt “westward the wagons” storyline, but getting much darker with the stories that deal with the terrible treatment of the Arapahoe, which culminates in the grim fifth episode about the Skimmerhorn massacre. After that you can almost hear the composer breathing a sigh of relief when he (and the score) is allowed to go romping out into the wide open spaces again with “The Longhorns” as Dennis Weaver and his colourful cowhands drive their herd through hostile territory to Colorado. That episode has some of the most lighthearted and catchy material in the entire score.

Once the narrative settles down in the town of Centennial and becomes less of an exhilarating adventure and more of an introverted drama, the score changes tack accordingly but still remains fascinating. And although there’s no score available for the last three episodes, there was one surprise on the tapes. Merle Haggard sings “I Guess He’d Rather Be In Colorado” during the last episode, a version that apparently has never been commercially released. It was recorded along with the score, and although it may be of less interest to fans of Addison’s music I’ll include it as a bonus at the very end. Haggard fans will rejoice because they can now hear it without sound fx and dialog.

The score for Episode 2, “The Yellow Apron”, will be available hopefully within the next 24 hours.

* I actually have the R. Gamba conducted Addison compilation with the intro/main title but, like a lot of other things, I’ve never gotten around to listening to it.

Does the rest of the score live up to it? Guess I’ll find out.

John Addison is unjustly overlooked as a composer, despite having an impressive range and an interestingly broad career trajectory – from 1950s Ealing comedies to British New Wave films of the 60s and to big-budget extravaganzas of the 70s like "A Bridge Too Far" and "Centennial".

I eagerly await the next instalment! Thanks again!

There is one cue I’d love to have – from Episode 11, which deals with the Depression and the ravages of the Dust Bowl. A housewife is driven mad by the howling of the wind and the creeping invasion of dust into her home; Addison scores this like a horror movie, with an eerie wordless female vocal – an element he doesn’t use anywhere else in the score. Pity that cue is missing.

Maybe some day we’ll have everything. And in stereo. Who knows? Stranger things have happened. But I’m sure we’re all grateful for the five hours that we do have (and thought we’d never have).

I’ve passed on all the positive reactions to the private collector who made this possible. Thanks to him, Centennial is finally out of the dusty vaults and playing in people’s homes.

If I’ve overlooked anyone who requested links, just PM me – but make sure your PM box is not full. A couple of members remain unreachable, but I’ve done everything I can to contact them.

Those images are so real-looking. I keep seeing Robert Conrad’s glaring face, expecting him to confront me…

With a Neveready Ⓡ Battery on his shoulder, Conrad looks me in the eye and sneers, "Go ahead and knock it off. I dare ya!"

So I oblige Pretty Boy and take a swing. I miss the battery completely but landed a good one, flush on his puckered chin, knocking him ass-backward.

After that, it all gets kind of hazy.

Next thing I know, I’m being mobbed by production staff! The director’s sobbing uncontrollably while whacking me repeatedly about the head with a rolled up script; an intern’s kicking me in the shins. I’m being handcuffed by studio security and shoved into the back of a police cruiser bound for Central Booking.

I’m told that Mr Conrad’s jaw had to be wired shut. Centennial Production’s has been halted 6-8 weeks and I’m being sued into the next century by NBC. And, Robert Conrad wants a rematch, in Primetime, This time, I’ve got to go down in the first round or else the lawsuit stays ‘ON’!

At least I got my own promotional deal from Neveready Ⓡ Battery. That deal will almost pay my fines and legal fees. That’s me, the eternal optimist…

That’s as far as I got with my fantasy about That Time I Punched Robert Conrad’s Ugly Face. You know, when I think about it, I should have pitched that idea to NBC execs. It might have made a fine miniseries in its own right…

One thing’s for sure: the artwork you posted is so detailed, it comes to life. A person might even call that artwork thought provoking.
