Jewel Master Original Sound Version Collection

Composed by Motoaki Takenouchi (SEGA - Sega Genesis / MegaDrive 1990)
Vertiphon 2018 Remaster
24-bit 44.1 kHz lossless FLAC audio format and 320kbit/s MP3.

WHAT IS THIS?

These 22 tracks comprise the remastered complete soundtrack of Jewel Master, which is a relatively obscure platform game developed by SEGA. Allow me to quote Sega Retro:
"The kingdom of Mythgard is terrorized by Demon King Jardine the Mad and his Dark Legion, but is stopped right before successfully destroying Mythgard by the Twelve Masters of the Elements. Jardine manages to destroy eight of the Twelve, and the other four channel their power to a Holy Blade, which you must retrieve to finally defeat Jardine."

So with this setup in mind, SEGA asked prog-rock obsessed Japanese composer (check the tracklisting) Motoaki Takenouchi to write music for it, and this soundtrack is the result. It's pretty damn good. The usual melodic Megadrive Rock stylings with a dash of progressive time signature playfulness, some "balladry" and some pieces that are simply very interesting. It's an eclectic set and one worth digging into. Lots of great melodies all over the place, and some interesting FM programming. (Keep in mind, getting the Genesis/MD to sound this good is NOT easy.)

As always I aim to provide the community with professional-sounding remasters of classic game soundtracks. Here is yet another fascinating Megadrive soundtrack for you to enjoy.

Thanks to MouseDown for suggesting this soundtrack!

Wow, what a legend! Thanks so much :-D Can't wait to hear this

edit: OMG man I dont know how you do this stuff but it sounds out of this world! Almost as if it's an orchestrated version, yet still coming out of a Genesis. I'm gonna enjoy this for the rest of my life (Jewel Master is really special to me personally). I hope you enjoyed this soundtrack as much as I do. It's so diverse, it's so well produced (rarely does a Genesis game reach this level in production), and some songs are just so easy to love and keep on going. Can we somehow get Motoaki himself to listen to this remaster?

edit2: "Now you're gone" has a tiny hick-up @ 0:39

Thanks for your comments, Mouse. I'm glad you're enjoying. I had no idea about this game or this soundtrack until you mentioned it. Suffice to say, it has a well-earned place in my collection! This is why I'm open to suggestions that I often do try as time allows.

Regarding the "hick-up": I've checked the source WAV files, and the FLAC and MP3 versions that I encoded and the only thing I can hear at 0:39 in "Now You're Gone" is a very transient/clicky note. FM sounds can get VERY "clicky" (particularly with the transients or the very start / attack portions of FM sounds) so perhaps that is what you're hearing?

Edit: Some thing you and others might like to know which I don't believe I've mentioned: often the VGM packs have tracks in a completely arbitrary order. For games that I know well I'm going entirely based upon my personal feelings about where tracks should go in the tracklist. Generally I go in game stage order, then bosses all together then ending themes as a climax as I feel it makes for a satisfying way to listen to a game's music. It might not be the "purist" way, but it hopefully is the more subjectively satisfying way. Further, in the case of games like Jewel Master that I don't really know well, I'll dig in to a lets play (World Of Longplays often!) and actually try to match songs with their stages. I did this for Contra Hard Corps (that was a huge challenge), and also for Jewel Master, plus a couple others.

Very much appreciate the effort that you put into this. This is how to properly honor the gems of the past that inspired us all so much :)

I downloaded this blindly and I don't regret a bit.
MD / Genesis synths bring me the fondest memories...
