After you have that meal with Gestahl in Vector, and your team is now Locke and Terra, all the other characters are in random places. Cyan is in front of Kefka's jail cell, Setzer and Cid are down by the airship fixing it, and Gau and Mog are in that cafe. You can talk to all of them, but when you talk to Gau there, he says "Smells like my parents' house. Why so familiar?"

Is there any significance behind this? Is it just a random statement, or are his rage abilities related to Vector in some way?

*spoilers
don't know how or why i figured this out but remember that old man that wanted sabin to do all that stuff? (after sabin fell off the raft) well, if you bother him enough times w/ sabin in your group (no gau just yet) you can get some information out of him about a 'monster child' he left in the wild but the old man says it was just a dream. well in the WOR (at least), get this info out of him (have gau in your group) and then go get gau a 'makeover' and gau has found his father.

Thank you, but I've gone through all of that. What I want to know is why Vector seemed so familiar to Gau.

Hmmm... that's true. That could just be it.

In Jap version Gau actuary says
"smell of alcohol...
smell of dad......?"
in the pub (not cafe)

I've heard there were some sort of regulation in American game industry, so they had to change bits and pieces while translating. one of them was the pub to cafe. I don't know in details but I guess who ever translated had to come up with alternative and messed up.

most likely because the translators don't want to corupt us americans. that helps to know too. (see my first post)

That's really cool; I didn't even know about this. (But I didn't really use Gau much.)
