I'm assuming you're refering to the Nintendo DS remake of the Japan-only Famicom FFIII, (and not the SNES FFIII, which is what FFVI was originally known as in the US), and to tell the truth, I have no idea.

All I know is it is in development, although whether it is released outside Japan is another matter (but I doubt very much that Square Enix wouldn't release it, given the other remakes have all seen international releases.). Just have patience - it will come eventually...

No, it's coming out for the DS.

that sucks. i wish it would've been for PSP, anyhow, final fantasy has always been in the playstation platform, well, almost...

There is a reason for that. FFI and II were originally updated for Bandai's Japan-only handheld Wonderswan console, so FF Origins is merely a more or less direct port of the Wonderswan version (with some basic additions, such as the opening movies). As FFIII's release on the Wonderswan was cancelled (although FFIV was strangely enough updated for it), FFIII fell by the wayside, as a direct update for the PSX would have been too expensive to produce.

For a long time, there were rumours going around that Square were considering updating it for the GBA, but now, of course, it's been announced for the DS. Persumably it has something to do with Square Enix's new licencing contract with Nintendo, in that they have to release a certain quota of games on Nintendo consoles, so I guess FFIII is a part of that.

I'm sure a port of FFIII to a Sony console will eventuate sometime in the future though.

I think that FFIII will have to come to the psp or ps3 because SE plans to release a game every month, they will have to make remakes of course.
As we have to wait i am playing FFIII (famicom) in the institute when i have nothing to do.

FFIII is being remade on the DS and the series started out on the NES and then went to the SNES and then the PSX, FF was with Nintendo for 6 games.

Mr Prak has friends among those of us who know what the fuck we're talking about (oh no, I said fuck! shit, I did it again!), and applaud him for putting people in his place. When you emerge from junior school, you realize that the only thing that we can depend on in the world is truth, and the little lies you make up to impress your friends, like broken sword here, won't impress anymore.

The sad fact is, like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny not existing, Mr Square Enix Executive is not your friend. In fact, his job is to take as much money from your parents as possible, without having to spend money himself.

Final Fantasy III is a game that could be run on my mobile phone, if anyone could be bothered reprogramming it into Java. The processing power required is extremely low - Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls, the GBA rerelease of FF Origins, had better graphics and an updated translation. Think about that - the Gameboy game was better than the PlayStation version. And it still wasn't using all of the GBA's graphics ability.

Fact number 2 - producing games costs money. A lot of money. So the executives look at what consoles are out there, and think what they will sell the most on for the least amount of money. Let's examine each choice -

PlayStation. It worked for FF Origins, but I think FF Origins was also the last game to be released on the PlayStation. It was the last one reviewed on the IGN PlayStation site, anyway. The console is simply too dead.

PlayStation 2 / 3. People expect a certain graphics ability from these machines. Warranted or not, you cannot put a 10 year old sprite based game on a current/next-gen console and expect it to sell well.

PlayStation Portable. The UMD is currently the most expensive gaming media in the world. To mass produce would cost Square Enix millions, and they're not guarenteed that sort of return. You also have the same argument as the PS2 - what is the PSP, if not a portable PS2?

Which leaves the Nintendo DS. It is still acceptable to release GBA-esque games on the machine, because it is a hybrid. The remake has nothing to do with taking advantage of the touch screen technology, though I can imagine it will make the menus fun. The DS card is a cheap form of flash-based technology that is easy to mass produce. It also has the advantage of being able to play Square Enix's GBA games, which means it's an open market as well - people who like FF3 DS are more likely to track down FF1&2 Dawn of Souls.

Bottom line? They can rake in the money by releasing it on the DS. Mr. Square-Enix Executive doesn't care about fanboys or fangirls - believe it or not, you are not the main consumer. He cares about the real Final Fantasy market, those who played it back in the NES days - those in the 18-24 market with the disposable income to purchase more than one handheld.

If you're not in the market, there is no use complaining.

I'm closing this thread, and i'll be watching for this sort of thing in the first place.

Rabid Monkey
04-23-2005, 03:53 PM
I know the thread is closed, and the conversation moved far beyond this, but I need to clear something up.

1) The Final Fantasy series was on a Nintendo based consol for seven years. By "based" I mean there is a span of seven years since the release date of Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy VI. There is also a span of seven years between the release date of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XI. That is hardly "always" or "most". Also, if you include Tactics Advance, it means that Final Fantasy games have been seen on Nintendo products for sixteen years. That's more than double the time span that the games have been on Sony products.

2) Eight Final Fantasies were originally released on Nintendo products. These consist of Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. If you include Final Fantasy Tactics Advance then that means there were nine games originally released on Nintendo products.

Final Fantasies originally released on a Sony product: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, and Final Fantasy XI. Six games. That's a little over 2/3 if you do not include Tactics Advance in the conversation, and exactly 2/3 if you do. That isn't even close to most Final Fantasies being released on Playstation products.

You kids need to do your homework.
