Description


Not to be confused with Akira Ifukube’s concert work “Arctic Forest” (1945), this re-recording of the music to the National Forest Trilogy (1955) was organized and conducted by Takeo Yahiro of the Bukimisha Weird Secret Society, and performed by the Weird Orchestra in 2014. The Bukimisha Weird Secret Society, led by Yahiro, is an a cappella group who releases a cappella renditions of various film scores, mainly the scores of Akira Ifukube. They originally released the music from the trilogy as a part of a series of MIDI type arrangements of Ifukube’s obscure scores, mainly documentaries. This is essentially a live orchestra version of the National Forest album of the series, and one of a few orchestral albums released by the a cappella group.

The National Forest Trilogy were three documentary films on Japan’s forests. Based on the information I gathered, the films are lost. There is little information on the films and what they are exactly about. The only information I found are the films being released in 1955, and a possible production company credit. That’s it.

As for the music, the score recordings are also lost, based on the information I gathered. Apparently, Akira Ifukube’s manuscripts of the scores remained extant in various degrees, making this album possible.

Based on the looks of things, the most complete of them is the manuscript of the score to the first film. The manuscript of the second film’s score are missing a couple of cues, and the manuscript of the third film’s score appears to be mostly lost, with only four cues extant.

The orchestration calls for flute, oboe, English horn, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, percussion, harp, piano, violins (Violin I and II), violas, celli (plural for cello), contrabass and chorus.


The music itself is gorgeous. Mostly slow and absolutely beautiful, one can easily be transported to a beautiful forest landscape. There are a couple of action oriented cues as well, with one (M6 revised) being quite powerful. In the end, the music is quite solid and memorable, and give a great example of composer Ifukube’s mastery.

Oh, fans of Akira Ifukube’s Godzilla and Tokusatsu scores will be pleased with some of the music here. In fact, material from two of the action oriented cues I mentioned appear in “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962).

This album happens to be brought to you by Shrine member Winter Shaman and I. He was gracious enough to provide some scans of the album! There wasn’t much to scan, as the booklet is an interview.

The track list on the files are in English. Only one track needed translating. Based on the track list, it looks like the names were taken from composer Ifukube’s manuscripts. Included with this post are both the original Japanese and translated English track lists. There are two PDFs included with the file. One is mine, and presents the track list as it appears on the album. The other provides some terminological explanations for some tracks.
