Ron Goodwin�s score for �Spanish Fly� was composed between �One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing� and �Candleshoe�, at a time when the British film industry was churning out tame sex comedies that were barely comedic and had very little sex in them. �Spanish Fly� falls into that category.
Terry Thomas stars in this thinly plotted romp as an opportunistic scoundrel who creates a cheap wine that tastes absolutely terrible until his manservant accidentally adds some local herbs to the brew, including the eponymous Spanish Fly (an insect with aphrodisiac qualities). The resulting wine, needless to say, becomes very popular, and much hilarity ensues (well, okay, maybe not that much). The film�s secondary plotline involves a photoshoot of semi-naked girls prancing about in lingerie, and prominent in these scenes is striking German actress Nadiuska, who went on to play Conan�s (short-lived) mother in �Conan The Barbarian.� And if I tell you that a side effect of the aphrodisiac wine is that it makes people bark like dogs, you�ll get some insight into the film�s level of humour.
Goodwin scores the movie as if it wasn�t terrible, and has great fun providing lots of Spanish-flavoured music, as well as some quasi-1970s rock. Broader comedy scenes are scored in the same playful style as his other comedy scores.
Network�s DVD contains the whole score, in mono, in a separate music suite (not synced to the film). Consistent with their other releases, the score is plagued with hellish volume dips that needed fixing. Nobody will ever know how much work I have to do to fix those bloody things.
Anyway, here it is, a slice of frothy & fun Goodwin goodness from a movie you will never have to sit through.
