It is hard to believe that Shirley MacLaine’s last starring role in a film musical was almost a half century ago, although she has certainly been active all these years and won a well deserved Best Actress Academy Award in the 1980s for her dramatic performance in “Terms of Endearment”. Unfortunately, SWEET CHARITY, released by Universal in 1969, was a box office bomb, not because of MacLaine or director Bob Fosse (although Fosse in his directing debut, overused zoom lens shots, in my opinion), and certainly not because of the stellar supporting case featuring Sammy Davis, Jr., Paula Kelly, Stubby Kaye, John McMartin and especially the fabulous Chita Rivera in one of rare film appearances. SWEET CHARITY failed because the public was tiring of the deluge of Hollywood big budget musicals in the 1960s following the incredible success of “The Sound of Music”. Even the film version of Broadway monster hit “Hello Dolly” tanked the same year despite (or because of) the casting of Barbra Streisand at the height of her star power. The soundtrack album from SWEET CHARITY was released by Decca/MCA Records but it was barely 40 minutes long highlighting the vocals but mercilessly cutting the dance music to minimum. Ralph Burns' excellent expanded orchestrations suffered the most as the result of this decision, which, unfortunately, was the usual in most of the major label’s musical soundtrack issues in those days.
This is an expanded remix of the 1969 SWEET CHARITY soundtrack which was mastered from a different source than the Decca/MCA album. It contains extended dance music and some additional tracks not on the soundtrack album or the Decca Broadway CD reissue. Sorry, no FLAC file available for this title as I did this remaster 10 years ago and I am unable at this time to re-do it in a higher resolution. Please do not ask.
