A quick check against the episode shows this is the complete score, although not in sequence. Here’s the track titles:
1. Fadeout
2. The Golf Coach
3. Rattled Killer (unused) *
4. Prelude
5. Columbo Gets Pulled Over
6. Golf Coach (end retake)
7. The Murder
8. Closing Credits (alternate)
9. The Playground
10. Exhuming The Body
11. Closing Credits
12. Trunk Trick
13. Night Drive/Body Dumped
14. Grieving Husband
15. Hunt For Contact Lenses
16. Trunk Trick (short edit)
17. Aftermath/Cleaning Up
* This is the only cue entirely unused in the episode, so I’m just guessing it goes here. It does perfectly fit a short “Act Out” moment where the killer (Robert Culp) sits at his desk after Columbo has left, and the killer’s cool composure slips, revealing the detective has rattled him badly.
This is how the tracks play in film order:
4, 7, 17, 13, 5, 14, 3, 2, 9, 10, 15, 12, 1, 11
Then you could add the alternates at the end:
6, 16, 8
Another heartfelt thanks for unearthing this treasure :)

Thank you so much.
This is a really great find - one of Gil Melle's best TV scores (the whole first season of COLUMBO
contained excellent scores by Dave Grusin (1968 TV movie), Billy Goldenberg and of course Gil Melle).
My other holy grail scores of this COLUMBO first/second season period are
MURDER BY THE BOOK by Billy Goldenberg
THE GREENHOUSE JUNGLE by Oliver Nelson.
If these two scores als would turn up as a ABC Reel to Reel Tape Recording some day,
it would be a dream come true for me ...
Thanks again for this Gil Melle rarity.
Kind regards.

HUGE ditto to this.
I've been a soundtrack fan/collector since the 1960s - and I have a friend who is an even more avid collector - and neither of us have ever come across anything like this unexpected gem. I mean, Universal releasing their TV scores on reel-to-reel tapes? Good God, what else could be out there? The mind boggles.

Didn't Region 4 DVD releases of COLUMBO have music-and-effects tracks for all, or most episodes?

Yeah, I read that too. I was tempted to splash out on those (weren't they Japanese releases?) but I figured they wouldn't be a radical improvement on the dvd rips I'd already made myself. But these reel-to-reel music-only releases... well, they're a totally different kettle of fish. I'd love to know exactly what was released in this way.

This is absolutely splendid. Many thanks!
I'd always wanted that main theme, and I love the quirky, oniric vibe of the other tracks. Such interesting sounds, too, sleigh bells, crotales, synths, low piano clusters...

Glad to hear you guys are enjoying this find, by way of learning a little more with regards to the format this was recorded on, I will dig around the loft for the original Reel but my recollection is that it had a sticker on it with: "The Burbank Studio" Prod No: Prod Title: Date: etc / At a guess, i think this is a copy that had been distributed later on in the 1970's

This is the sound of the 70ies I love: weird, avantgardistic, intimate, sometimes outright nightmarish, then again unashamedly romantic and melodic, but always preserving the easy listening, cool classical jazz style of the 60ies. And, most importantly, alway using real instruments. Gil Melle was a tv scoring giant, whose music deserves to get released much more than before. Hopefully, there is more to get unearthed, before it's too late!
Thanks for this great share!

Can't help but agree. '60-'70s television scoring was DYNO-mite!
can't stop listening to this...adding the Billy Goldenberg score for Ransom for a Dead Man...it's magic...
maybe one day we will have a LLL box like the Mission Impossible 6cds!

If this were to ever happen, it wouldn't be produced by La-La Land. Those giant box sets were lots of pain & no gain for them - sales were very sluggish. :(
