In all actuality though, the DS is going to be extremely superceeded by the PSP. Nintendo knows it needs to sell as many as it can now. That's the reason it's got backwards capability with the GBA - i'm guessing the next Gameboy won't (just as the DS won't play original Gameboy games, only Advance games). With the DS firmly in peoples hands as the third pillar, they can release funky touch-screen games, and keep up sales of GBA games in the budget category well into the future.

The next Gameboy will have to compete on the PSP's level. That is, current generation console graphics. And I think the best idea i've heard is to make it so it can actually play GameCube games. The disc is small enough - it's about the same size as Sony's UMD. So, they release the new console, and there's already a large installed base of games - well developed games. Imagine being able to play the new Zelda, or a game like Resident Evil 4 or Metroid Prime on the go - all without having to spend any more money. Hell, they could charge what they want for the system.

Of course, the problem is that - not having to spend any more money on games. Nintendo makes most of its profit from game sales, not hardware sales, so even if everyone is excited at the prospect of a portable GameCube, it might not work so well if people think "Hey, i've already got X GameCube games - why do I need to buy any more?".

Still, one can dream.

A gameCube-portable???? that's interesting but if nintendo wants to destroy sony it will have to make more and better extra features that the psp, I mean it will have to have a digital camera or conection with pc things like that... things that make you use it all the day and dont stop playing...
By the way i've heard nintendo will release a new gba in the end of the year... it will have to have many new features to compete against ds and psp

I know that it is quite a longshot, but it would be awesome if the next Gameboy was backwards compatible with Gamecube, N64, etc, games. Yeah that might not seem like much, but I would definately buy it.

Yeah, Nintendo is planning on releasing the next gameboy next year(2007 at the latest). I don't think they ever expected too much out of the DS. As someone said somewhere else, the DS isn't in the same market as the GBA. It's in the "interrupt PSP sales market". Nintendo should be able to overwhelm the PSP in power, and it wouldn't make much sense for Sony to release any new system at that time to compete with whatever Nintendo offers for at least 2 years. And since the DS was announced as a "third pillar" and not the real sequel to the gba, as well as the early announcement of the general date for the "real" next gameboy, I don't think Nintendo will do themselves that much harm by releasing a new handheld so soon after releasing the DS.

Plus, seems like the PSP's lowest price out in the states will be $250 because they're only selling the value pack(?). With the head start the DS has, and it's short intended life span, I don't think there will be enough time for the PSP to really surpass it convincingly.

the new gameboy is smaller, the select and start buttons are on the bottom of the unit and a brighter LCD screen.

It's basically the size of a iPodmini

It's on engadget

Well so far I'm hardly impressed with the DS, you can count the number of released games on one hand and 2 fingers, and the touch screen barely does it for me. If I ever were to buy a handheld it'd be the Advance (classic, I don't really like the SP one) or the PsP. I have no clue about what the next GameBoy will look like, but I fear that Nintendo is going to have to a more then increadible job, because here in Holland, no one seems to be impressed by the DS.

Portable systems are meant to be small. And I haven't actually seen the size of the Micro compared to the SP, so I can't actually say if I like the new size or not.

The big thing i always mark my handheld purchases on is the amount + quality of games.
I mean the DS is cool and all but unless it got some solid RPG's on or at least a 3d version of harvest moon, i dont think i'd ever bother buying it.

Thats where the gameboy micro seems good, i already have a decent collection of GBA games and if its affordable then it would be something i would buy.

If that's what the Micro is going to be like.... then I predict the end of Nintendo. Judging from the specs, it says it's gonna have the processor the GBA SP has, which means nothing new. They also pointed all that all available GBA games will be playable on this system, but told nothing about new games/features. This is just another version of the GBA, which is now being recycled. I hope they actually do come with something better, because from what I saw/read the Mirco is -highly- disapoiting.
