All but one of my friends who play Final Fantasy think that the old games on the NES and SNES are rubbish and they don't even bother to play them, but I think that they're great. The only thing I ever hear them say that's bad about them is the graphics but pesonally I don't think they're that bad and I don't think you should judge a game by how good the graphics are. Anyway I was just wondering what everyone else's opinion on the original Final Fantasy games is.

It's kind of hard for me to decide. Most of the early Final Fantasy games were great, and a couple of them were excellent. They didn't rely on graphics to appeal to the player; instead, the sole focus was on the storyline. Then I think that the series took a big blow with the Playstation era of FF. But with the release of FFX, a wonderful game imo, and a couple others for the Playstation 2, the future looks very bright once again. So if VII, VIII, and IX are included in the newer Final Fantasies, then I'm going to have to say I like the classics better.

Definitely classics. Not only was there abundant cheap humour (which I really like) and good storylines, I just thought the gameplay was more fun. IMO, graphics have nothing at all to do with the quality of a game. Plus, games like FFVIII and FFX wouldn't let you name all the characters, and that takes a great deal of fun out of the game. I mean, what's more fun than naming Tellah Box, or naming your FFI characters Beef, Help, Oats, and Fail?

I said that I liked the newer ones better, but that may change being that I've only completed I and II and am playing VI right now. I really bugged me getting in random encounters with up to nine different monsters, also I liked the indepth storylines and character growth of the new ones, but I'm sure Iv V and VI have that too.

I think overall the older series is better, however FF-VII is still my favourite, and both IX and X are very good

Other than Tactics, I didn't really see a reason to vote for the modern games, so I voted for the classics because of FFIII, FFV and FFVI.

The old Final Fantasy games on the SNES and NES were my favorites, especially FF6 because of the variety of characters. Graphically those Final Fantasy games looked awesome for that era in video game history.

Flame me all you want for this, but Final Fantasy I & II in their original NES forms were shit. They looked horrible, the menus were confusing and not explained well, and if you attacked an enemy that was killed - you attacked empty space. (FF III is the exception to the rule, because it was a truly sweet game - i'm looking forward to the DS release). The recent Origins (and Dawn of Souls) releases have made the first two fantastic portable fun - but still not deep.

Final Fantasy IV I don't really like, but that's just a personal bias. Final Fantasy V is good, and Final Fantasy VI is fantastic. When it comes to immersion and a deep engaging storyline, Final Fantasy VI would have to be in the top three.

However, I was introduced to Final Fantasy by Final Fantasy VII, so the nostalgia element will always hold a place in my heart. I also believe it to be as immersive as Final Fantasy VI. Final Fantasy VIII was like FF4 - good, but not my cup of tea. Final Fantasy IX reminded me a lot of FF5.

Final Fantasy X is the greatest FF game created. Period. There is no other Final Fantasy that is as immersive, has such an inspired world, and has the same magic. The fact that Final Fantasy X is so fantastic makes me despise the fanboy rubbish that FF10-2 was even more.

Overall, if I had to chose a period, I would chose the modern - but i'd feel lost without ever getting to experience the adventures of Terra, Edgar, Locke and crew. Final Fantasy VI and VII come an equal second in my heart. Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy, and is great, modern or classic - and if Final Fantasy XII manages to catch the same feel of Ivalice that Final Fantasy Tactics Advance did, it's going to be fantastic as well.

ther should be a third chose, "both".

i think all of the games were great. all of them were well scripted, all of them were fun to play!

i can't vote for either, because i don't like to seperate them into "the classics" and "The new ones", they are all just final fantasy games to me.

I love the classic ones, but I like the other too, it's just that the classic ones have something... special like feeling

I prefer the modern ones, because of the graphics. The classics are fantastic, and incredibly good, but the 3d of the others is great. However, many of the modern games are shit ( FF11 ) but i love them more than the classics.

It's always good to know where the games originated, so basically I would always choose the classics ff.

I cannot seperate the classics from the modern in terms of my favorite
the earlier ones were great once the story became the focus instead of gameplay
I love sprite games as they are in a league of their own and should not be compared to 3d engines....

I never see people complain that their emoticons are not rendered in full 128 bit 3d

everything must start from somewhere so the difficulty with menu's and battles can be cut some slack in my book as trial and error helps define the product into what we expect out of it

I think the old games are great and far more original then the new ones (not story wise but game play) BUT they can't compete with the new games, they are bigger, better and faster, and they look better

ill pick the first ones because as someone already said they have a great story lines and even though they dont have good graphics the story makes up for it.
as for the later games i love them cause they were the first ones i played and they have some alright stories and side quests

Newer ones, because they had much better plots, characters, and more immersive worlds then the older ones in my opinion.

The only "modern" FF's I really love are IX and Tactics (I will NOT waver from my opinion that VI and IX are the best). I'm gonna haveta say 'classics.' Sorry Zidane, Dagger, Vivi, and Steiner...

It's hard to decide really, graphic wise the new ones blow the old away obviously, but some of the old one were well, lol truely old school. When ya compare story lines they are all pretty close. For this one i couldn't decide and ended up not voting lol

The oldies are great, but I actually want a storyline that doesn't put you to sleep.
