Hi what does it mean by
"You must spread some reputation around before you can send it to [insert user here]"
I have been giving other people reputation but I still get this message.

It means you care too much about rep

It has two meanings:

1) Jack
Jack was one of the first people who helped create forums on the internet.

2) Shit
Self explanitory.

And Jack just left town.

Because it is very stupid.

And stupid uploaders are forcing it on pirates like you for e-penis reasons.

Here are the facts:

1) You cannot rep the same person twice in a row.

2) You cannot rep more than 3 or 4 times in a 24 hour time period.

You'll get a notice saying you've given out too much reputation and have to wait.
So wait.

But the last person you repped, cannot be the first person you rep (again).
You will need to rep someone else needy and petty before you can rep the previous lonely soul.

A number of uploaders demand reputation because they're assholes. Plain and simple.
They'll talk a lot to give an excuse.
But it's really just to be rep whores and stop other users from getting any reputation.

They're really just trying to undercut competition.

The feature is meant for nice and social forums where people have two brain cells to rub together.
Fun places.

Not for snivelling little children who *need* to pirate music illegally.

There used to be a "like" button that's similar to Facebook's "like" button.
But it imposes a security risk so it was disabled.
Now the Like whores converted to Reputation whores.

We're just really one giant sleazy saloon of misfits and prostitutes.
We all pay the Devil. So lube up and enjoy your time. :smrt:

Collectibles as a hobby is a competition by definition. People spend vast amount of money buying stamps just to show their dominance. At the end whole life is a competition. Take, for example, beloved Sparky. Maybe he does not have enough music to offer here but his wisdom are priceless (YOU MUST hear his POETRY). It can't be beat by brain trust. We need to respect his genius. Probably in private life no one 'taken seriously' Sparks but it is the case with all the geniuses, their way of thinking is way ahead of the times in which they live. Tesla, Mozzart Forman Sparks... No one better than Sparky knows what term whore means. After all he's been here chief lobbyists for 'pay me for link' prostitutes. What we ordinary mortals can do to express our gratitude to Sparky? Not too much.

Hey i know: we can REP his 'sunday wisdom'.

LONG LIVE SPARKY BOY

I'm a word whore when it comes to posts.

That's why I never use Twitter.
I never want to submit to the conformity of limited words and expression.

The pen is definitely mightier than the button.

A different question: how can people with a recent join date have accumulated huge amounts of reps? They might not have even shared anything (which I thought was the point of reps in the music download forum). I ask because I send music download links via PM since my displayed links were all deactivated. The rep and join date gave a small indication of who I was sending to. The huge reps for no apparent reason makes me suspicious.

General information:

1) The reputation system doesn't mean shit, don't take it seriously+don't use it to measure the "value" of a user, it's a rather idiotic thing to do. A guy with maximum rep.-level like me can be a scumbag reporting links, while a random who just joined could be an "innocent" user who simply wants to get a copy of the goodies and leave/not bother.
2) Shortly after "reputation" got implemented, a thread was started in General Discussion where users rep'd each other for fun, this to say that we have folks who haven't shared a lot of music/stuff, yet they have maximum "level/grade" of reputation.
3) The amount of reputation points a user collected determines how many reputation points he/she can gift to another user, example: I currently have 3465 point(s), Reputation Power: 38 - this means that I'm going to give 38 points to whoever I "rep". I've personally seen on my own profile increments of +100 reputation points from a single rep.-gift over the years, take all this stuff into account and you'll see how it can not be that "abnormal" to witness users who just joined already with huge amounts of reputation.

EDIT:
Personally, I like to leave rep. to folks who display gratitude and I don't think I'm the only one who does that. Besides, unless someone got a hold of an account with administrator-privileges, reputation can't be "edited".

I had assumed a "rep" was equally valued, like a vote, regardless of who gives it. Which is why I thought it also reflected a certain amount of time passing in order to earn so many votes. Of course I know it doesnt tell the whole story about the person.
It still seems odd that these fellows could have maxed out their green dipstick already. I asked one of them how he accumulated so much so fast, and he was evasive.

Nah, reputation doesn't work like that, not around here, at least. Go to the Settings (http://forums.ffshrine.org/usercp.php) page, scroll a bit and you'll see the latest reputation you have given users, at the "top" of that list you can find Latest Reputation Given (Reputation Power: ).

Huh. Thanks, Leon. If there's every a democratic vote to change the rep system to an egalitarian exchange of one rep from anyone, I will cast my 89 power votes for it (heh heh).
