Here it is – finally! – the very last season of Laurie Johnson's scores for The Professionals.
This time around there are 18 episodes instead of the usual 13 because the Network Blu Ray set includes the episodes that were commissioned for the final season, which was technically Season Five.
For Season Four, the composer continued his long-standing strategy of recycling cues from previous episodes, but there is also a generous amount of brand new music to enjoy. I haven't included every single note of recycled music – only where it adds some flavour or variety to a score.
Perhaps influenced by the sounds of the new decade (this music was scored in 1980 and 1981) the composer embraced electronics a little bit more, deftly adding colour to some of his suspense music. And there are some standout action cues receiving their debut: "Blood Sports" has some terrific clattering percussion, "The Ojuka Situation" vibrates with quasi-disco beats, and there's an exciting new piece of chase music first heard in "Discovered In A Graveyard" that also ends the series with a bang when it's repeated during the climactic speedboat chase in the very last episode, "Spy Probe."
Like the previous season I was able to use music featured on the CD "The Music Of Laurie Johnson Volume Two" - scores for "The Gun" and "The Ojuka Situation" are well represented on that collection, though there is also music from those scores appearing here for the first time. Interestingly, the climactic cue for "Foxhole On The Roof" that appears on that CD is not actually in the episode, although it was clearly intended for it (you can sync it to the final helicopter scene and it fits perfectly.) I've included it as part of the episode suite, as it rounds it off nicely. The music does appear in the later episode "A Man Called Quinn", so you'll hear it there too.
Well, that's it, folks. No more Professionals music. It's been a long road and I've really enjoyed working on this music (even with all the damn volume dips!) and now that it's all over it feels like saying goodbye to an old friend. My thanks to all the members who've followed this collection (and waited patiently for this last one!)
