When the first LP of The Long Good Friday was released in 1983, the album’s producers said their next project was going to be OPERATION DAYBREAK.
And then they went out of business. The promised LP remained just a dream.
The age of CD arrived, and fans of this score thought to themselves, “Now, surely, someone will release this…”
Nope.
And it looks like a release will remain just a dream. Composer David Hentschel has had a note on his website for a number of years now, responding to many requests for this score. Apparently the master tapes are in poor shape, unreleasable. A re-recording, though not impossible, is too expensive a proposition for now.
So we’re left with the music as it appears in the film. I recently bought the DVD and ripped most of the score. Not every note, just the highlights. It inevitably contains some sound FX and a couple of lines of dialog. For fans who have prayed for a decent release, perhaps this small offering will satiate their hunger a little.
