Having a general profound dislike for operas short of arias and orchestral pieces lifted from these dreary things, imagine my unexpected surprise a few years back when I discovered this much unpopular Korngold opera. It was not loved in its day where as his other operas were a great success. Critics felt the story was dopey and Korngold brought nothing new to the genre.

I loved it.

Though selections do appear in the Caspar Richter recordings I have previously posted; this is the BIG THING, all three discs. I like to sit back and close my eyes and the music washes over with the sound of so many Korngold soundtracks to come. I hear hints here and there. I hope your ears will experience the same delight.

This remains my favorite recording of The Adventures of Robin Hood. I had it as an LP in 1984. There have been many recordings since, some with much more music. I am content with this; tough audience as I am. It includes the booklet detailed by George Korngold. We owe a lot to George. He not only championed his father's music so it not be forgotten but he also influenced so many other recordings of film composers. Sadly, like his father, George died too young but he left a legacy behind that could so easily have been lost.

Leave a message here for verbose Phideas and I will see that links will come your way from my final Korngold offer. I most seriously hope everyone has had good listening experiences and will continue to seek out this composer's masterful work.

On British television in the 1970s, Andr Previn conducted one movement from the violin concerto, and then told the story of the "famous" American music critic who declared that "Korngold's violin concerto is more corn than gold". Previn then pointed out that the critic is no longer remembered whereas Korngold is.

You are very welcome. Seems a great number of fine & polite music lovers have surfaced for Korngold. Had no idea I had collected so much of his work... I know I have missed some things. My taste in composers usually leans toward the obscure with very few compositions (damn) such as Gerlad Finzi and Geir Tveitt. However Korngold is out THERE. He took his tunes from the movies and turned them into something bigger and in two cases lifted works in their entirety to add to his opus collection: The cello concerto and Tomorrow (this has only been recorded twice).

Possibly Tomorrow has been ignored because the absence of The Constant Nymph being viewed for for close to 60 years. There were decades of estate squabbles over the authors of the film, the book, the stage play which kept it tucked away- until recently it had finally been released on DVD. It is a fine melodrama with a wonderful, flourish of Korngold's music (as some might have noticed from a bonus recording I tucked into one of these downloads). I recommend purchasing the film... originally Korngold was to write a ballet sequence but instead it was the work 'Tomorrow' that fills out the last ten minutes of this tale of unrequited love. (Phiddy is nothing if not a pedantic romantic) ;-)

Not looking for any links, but wanted to say thanks to Phideas for these wonderful Korngold shares. Great music from a great composer, and I echo the thoughts on Das Wunder der Heliane. It's absolutely gorgeous.
