Hey, what can I say? I'm a lovely person (it says as much over there in the corner, so it MUST be true, yes?) ;-)
I can wax poetic about Ravel's work to no end... as can many. His piano concerto for left hand always leaves me bewildered. THIS music comes from a single hand at the piano? How is that possible. That and the obvious fact it is incredibly beautiful is a cause to marvel. Korngold created a concerto for left hand (for the same one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein) but that music is a resounding DUD. "While Ravel was composing it he turned to Saint-Saen's etudes for left hand which he found technically helpful, although of course the final result is unmistakably Ravellian and could have been produced by no-one else."
Wittgenstein allowed himself certain liberties with the score (all three sections are played without a break and evolve in a brooding melancholy) and in answer to Ravel's protests, said: "Performers should not be slaves." Ravel snapped "Performers ARE SLAVES!"

Phideas1 If you like Martinon's works, you should listen to last's year "Jean Martinon - The Complete CSO Recording" by RCA. It's a 10CD set of recordings made with Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the sound is very nice IMO. As far as Bolero/Daphnis et Chloe/OdP is concerned the version to have is EMI DVD-A edition from 2001. Thanks to amazing mastering it does no longer sound like 70s analog recording. I really love the sound of this edition. Plus it has all 4 original tracks separated so you can play it on 4.0 speaker set as originaly intended.

Martinon's Ravel is indeed the gold standard. I used to have these (in a more recent print, I think - the cover art is unfamiliar) but I think I lent them and never got them back... so I'd very much appreciate the links. Thank you. :)

Many years ago I stopped lending music unless I knew it would not come back. I put labels in all my books stating ownership and stating the boob had yet to return my property. I lost all my Martinon Debussy works- and Debussy piano works on EMI because of my generous heart and soft head. Thus I understand your pain. On a philosophical note: My old art professor hunted for a book in his office he thought I'd enjoy, then stated in a matter of fact fashion "I guess it was one of those that did not come back." Surprised, I asked how he could be so mellow about his property. "I lent it with good intent," he shrugged, "it was up to the other person to do the right thing."

Oh my, they're magic... pure magic! But of course they are. We could not expect any less from THE SORCERER SUPREME! :)
In all seriousness, these are absolutely lovely renderings of Ravel's work. Thank you so very much for sharing these.
